Description
M. M. WILSON. Impravement in Combi-ned Square, Bevel, Plumb, and Gauge..
@didnt hm @peut (tffit.
MILTON M. WILSON, or ELwoon, New" JERSEY., ASSIGNOR To HIMSELF AND JAMES H. cunt, von SAME PLACE.
Letters Patent No. 114,378, dated May 2, 1871. Y
IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED SQUARE, BEVEL, PLUMB, AND GAUGE.
The Schedule referred to nithese Letters Patent and making part o! the lame.
To all whom tt may concern l Beit known that I, MILTON M. WILSON, of Elwood, county of Atlantic, State of New Jersey, have invented a new and improved Combination Tool, and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon. The object of my invention is to provide a combination tool that will embrace a rule, marker, try-square, gauge, bevel, spirit-level, and plumb, which is especially adaptedvfor carpenters use in weather-boarding a building.
Figure l of the drawing is a side view of my improved combination tool.
Figure 2 is a top view of the same.
Figure 3 is a side view of the same, showing the gauge'partially extended and theinstrument adjusted .for a try-square.
To enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, 1 will now proceed to describe it.
The hody of the tool consists of a wooden bar, B,
the central portion of which is made somewhat nar-V rower than the end pieces E and E', so that it can be placed on an angle or transversely across a board and used as a marker.
On the upper edge of the bar B is secured a metal strip, S, on the face of which are marked the ordinary divisions of a foot-rule, and in one end of the bar and sliding under the said strip is an adjustable gauge, G, the upper surface of which is also marked with graduated inches.
' not in use, is closed down in a suitable slot formed in the bar, and when elevated in a vertical position it can be used as awry-square; or it can be placed onany angle desired and used as a bevel in cutting miters, Sac. i p
The slot O, through which the thumb-screwT passes, allows the blade to be extended or shortened to different lengths above the upper edge of'. the bar B.
A projection, J, secured tok the netal strip S, at a proper distance from that end of the bar into which the gauge Gr is passed, is pressed against one edge of the board when the gauge is set for a certain-width,
or for marking the position of the nails in weatherboarding.
In the center of the bar B is placed a spirit-level,
l L, which is visible through a rectangular-shaped opening made in the metal strip S, so that the instrument can be placed in a horizontal position and used as an ordinary level.
VThe endpiece E' has a circular opening, N, made through'it, in which is placed a spirit-level, L; the said level is set transversely across the bar B in order that,.. when the instrument is placed in a vertical position, it will act as a plumb.
rlhe end pieces E and E are iucased ou the sides and lower edges with metalpplates secured by screws, and the lower edge of the bar B is also protected by means of a metal strip secured to it.
Having thus described my invention, its construe-1 tion and operation,
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Pateut, is-
The above-described combination tool embracing a rule, marker, try-square, gauge, bevel, spirit-level, and plumb, constructed-and operating substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof- I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
- MILTON M. WILSOR.
