B. A. MILLER. CARPENTERS TOOL-1 APPLICATION FILED lAN- I5, 1913- Patented June 15, 1915.
MAM ay 1H5 NORRIS PETERS CO. PHOTO-LITHQ, WASHINGTON, D1 C.
BENJAMIN A. MILLER, OF WEST HAZLE'ION, PENNSYLVANIA.
CARPENTERS TOOL.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN A. MILLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at West Hazleton, in the county of Luzerne, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carpenters Tools; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to carpenters tools and particularly to a tool for laying out weather boards.
The object of the invention resides in the provision of a tool of the character named through the instrumentality of which all the saw lines necessary to the proper shaping of a weather board may be laid out thereon without the necessity of removing the tool fiiorg the board after it has been once app 1e With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of referenoe denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a tool constructed in accordance with the invention, and Fig. 2 a section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings the tool is shown as comprising a base member 10 which is preferably rectangular in shape. Secured to the base member 10 at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the latter are spaced strips 11 and 12 and slidably mounted between said strips 11 and 12 is a gage bar 13. Connecting the strips 11 and 12 within the limits of the base 10 is a bridge plate 14 in which is mounted a binding screw 15 adapted to impinge against the gage bar 13 and lock the latter in a desired adjustment.
In the use of the tool the gage bar 13 is Specification of Letters Patent. AppIication filed January 15, 1913. Serial No. 742,166.

adjusted so that the end thereof against which the marking pencil is to be disposed will be positioned the proper distance from the adjacent edge of the body 10, such distance being the width face the weather board is to have when in place. The tool is then applied to the board with one long edge of the body 10 disposed against one long edge of the weather board. A line is then drawn along one edge of the strip 11 to square the end of the board and the marking pencil then positioned against the proper end of the gage bar 13. The tool is then moved longitudinally of the weather board with the body 10 maintained in engagement with the longitudinal edge of said board. The line thus traced by the marking pencil will give the desired'width face the board is to show. In the event of knots being present in theboard it is only necessary to cease moving the tool at a point adjacent the knot and then draw a line along the edge of the strip 11. Movement of the tool is then continued until it has passed over the knot and then another line is drawn along the edge of the strip 11. The markingpencil is then returned to its position at the proper end of the gage bar and the movement'of the tool continued until another knot is approached when the same operation is resorted to. In this manner the proper saw lines may be laid out over the full board without removing the tool therefrom after it is once applied.
What I claim is A carpenters tool comprising a rectangular body portion, spaced strips secured to one side of the body transversely thereof and at right angles thereto, the terminal portions of said strips extending beyond respective longitudinal edges of the body, a gage bar slidable between said strips and having one end disposed inwardly of the corresponding ends of the strips when operatively adjusted, and means for locking said gage bar in different adjustments.
In testimony whereof, I affiX my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
BENJAMIN A. MILLER.
