Description

(No Model. W. F. LANTZ.
ATTACHMENT FOB SQUARES.
No. 503,050., Patented Aug. 8, 1393.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
wILLiAM F. LANTZ, oF'A KRoN, onto.
[ATT C MENT FOR SQUARES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 503,050, dated Augu'st 8, 1893. 7
Application filed April 17. 1893. fierial No- 470|592- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. LANTZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Akron, in the county of Summit and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Squares; and I do hereby declare thatthe following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The present invention has for its object to provide an attachment to be used with the ordinary carpe'nters square for the purpose of obtaining all angles in joiner-work and carpentry, also the length and cuts on rafters at all pitches or angles, as well as the height of risers and width of steps in stair work.
The invention consists in an attachment constructed substantially as shown in the drawings and hereinafter "described and claimed.
Figure 1 of the drawings represents a per-' spective view in detail of a portion of one of the arms of a square with my improved attachment in position thereon; Fig. 2 a similar view showing the square in dotted lines and the attachment thereon in a reverse position. Fig. 3 represents a plan view showing the attachment in position on both arms of the square ready to be used in laying off work.
In the accompanying drawings A represents the square of the usual construction having upon the arms thereof my improved attachments which consist of the gages B adjustably and removably held thereon by the clamping plates at b and set-screw c. The gages when set at the desired position on the arms of the square as indicated in Fig. 3, the proper angle is obtained that would be found necessary in laying off certain class of work. Thelower clamping plate I) is provided with the set screw 0 and the upper plate a is somewhat longer than the lower plate so that its end will project beyond the same and is formed with a downwardly extending bearing arm 0. The arm 0 bears against the edge or side of the work which is being laid off, said arm having a knife-edge d to be used as a marker to cut into the Wood. The clamping-plates are both horizontal and parallel with each other, a sufficient space being left between them" to admit the edge of the square to which the devices are connected.
The entire device with the exception of the set-screw is formed of one and the same piece of metal, thusproviding "a very simple and convenient gage for: attachment to the ordinary carpenters square.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
An attachment to squares, consisting of a gage having two horizontal and parallel clamping-plates and a set-screw for holding the attachment to the square, the upper one of said clamping-plates extending beyond the lower one and terminating in a downwardly extending arm having a knife-edge, said arm being integral with the plate, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
WM. F. LANTZ.
