UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIGE.
EDWARD KUHNS, OF ST. CLAIR, PENNSYLVANIA,
IMPROVEMENT IN GAGE ATTACHMENTS FOR SQUARES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 175,] 13, dated March 21, 1876; application filed February 21, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWARD KUHNS, of St. Clair, in the county of Schuylkill and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Attachment for Carpenters Squares, of which the following is a specification Figure l is a side view of myimproved device, shown as applied to the blade of a square. Fig. 2 is a cross-section taken through the line a; ac, Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is a view illustrating its use in laying ofi' stairs. Fig. 4 is a view illustrating its use in taking the height of objects.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of thisinvention is to furnish an improved attachment for carpenters squares, which shall be simple in construction, and conveniently applied to and adjusted upon the blade of a square.
The invention consists in the device made in U-t'orm to fit upon the edge of a square, and overlap its sides, and provided with the pointers, and the set-screw to adapt it for use, as hereinafter fully described.
A represents the blade of a square. B is the device, which is bent into U-forrn so as to to fit upon the edge of the square A, and overlap its sides. The device B is made with a pointer, b upon each side, pointing to the division-marks of the square, and is provided with a set-screw, D to clamp it in place when adjusted.
The device is very useful for many purposes, as, for instance, in laying out stairs. For this purpose one of the devices is put upon each arm of the square. Then, if the steps are to be ten inches wide and seven inches high, the device upon the long arm is adjusted at the ten-inch point, and the one upon the short arm is adjusted at the seven-inch point. The square thus prepared is moved along the plank, as shown in Fig. 3. This enables the stairs to be laid out muchquicker and with less liability to make mistakes than when laid out in the usual way. The device is also very usefulfor various other uses, which will readily occur to any practical carpenter.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The device B, made in U-form to fit'upon the edge of a square and overlap its sides, and provided with the pointers b and the set-screws b to adapt it for use, substantially as herein shown and described.
