ARMAND P. DUBUS, OF NEV ORLEANS, LOUISIANA'.
SQUARE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 659,513, dated October 9, 1900.
Application tiled November 21, 1899. Serial No. 737,781. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern;
Be it kuown'that I, ARMAND P. DUBUS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented a new and Improved Square, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. A
The purpose of this invention is to provide a square adapted especially for marking keyways on shafting and the like, although the invention is also adaptable to other measurements, as will be obvious to the skilled mechanic.
This specification is the disclosure of `one form of my invention, while the claims define the actual scope thereof.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both views.
Figure l is a perspective view showing the tool in use at the end of a shaft; and Fig. 2 is a similar view, except that parts are broken away, showing the tool in use intermediate the ends of the shaft.
The tool has a head formed, as shown in the drawings, in two sections a and ct', the former being the main or body portion and having two legs b and c, disposed at right angles to each other. If desired, the head may be made in one piece. The section a is fastened to the section a and extends along the outer edge of the leg c. This section ci is formed at its top edge with a level d and at its outer vertical edge with a level e. A circular orifice is formed in the section ct of the head and is fitted with a ring or annulus f, graduated, as shown, and provided with a level f', which may be adjusted therein according to the graduations of the ring. lt will thus be seen that I provide three levels, two of which bear a fixed relation to the head of the tool and the third of which is adjustable to any desired position. Each section a and a is provided with an eye g, to which may be attached a plu rnb-bob g through the medium of a plumb-line g2, as shown. This plumb-bob may he used in the connection shown byfull linesin Fig. lor in the connection shown by dotted lines in the same View.
A scale h, preferably twelve inches in length, is provided and fitted to slide through the section a of the head of the tool, the arrangement of the scale h being such that its reading edge 7L is disposed at an angle of forty-five degrees from the reading or inner edges of both legs b and o. The scale h has an extension h3 at its lower end, which is disposed at right angles to the 'main portion of the scale and which is preferably of one-half the Width of the scale, as shown in the drawings. tion a of the head of the tool and provides a means for adjustably holding the scale in the desired position.
This tool being especially adapted for marking keyways on shafting is used for this purpose in the manner shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Assuming that the keyway is tobe formed at the end of a shaft, the tool is placed, as shown `in Fig. l, so that the spirit-level d shows horizontal and the plumb-bob g shows vertical. Then the center of the shaft may be marked along the edge h of the scale h. To mark a line longitudinally on the shaft, the tool is placed as shown in Fig. Q-that is to say, the scale h is moved up, so as to lie with the extension h3 over the shaft, and then by reading from the level d and plumb-bob g the extension h3 of the scale may be made to indicate the proper line on the shaft. By turning the tool, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. l, and by changing the plumb-bob g from the position shown by full lines to that indicated by dotted lines the reading edge h of the scale h may be disposed horizontally and the horizontal center of the shaft determined as indicated.
It will be obvious to a skilled mechanic that the invention is capable of many uses other than those herein described.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. A square, comprising a head having two straight edges at right angles to each other and provided with two legs at right angles to each other and with an aperture, a spiritlevel in each straight edge, a spirit-level adjustable in the aperture of the head and a scale sliding in the head with its reading edge A thumb-screw h2 works in the sec- IOO equidistant from the legs, substantially as two sections, one section being provided with two legs at right angles to each other and with a guideway, and the other section having a Vertical edge and secured to the iirst, with its top flush with the top of the first section and extending along the outer edge of one of the legs of the said first section, spiritlevels in the second section of th'ehead, one in the rop and the other in its straight edge, and a scale sliding in the guideway of the first named section, substantially as described.
3. A square, comprising a head having two straight edges at right angles to each other and provided with two legs at right angles to each other, and with an eye at the end of each straight edge for the attachment of a plumbline, a spirit-level in each straight edge, a third spirit-level adjustable in an aperture of the head, and a scale adjustable in the head and having its reading edge equidistant from the legs, substantially as described.
first section with its top flush with the .top of the said first section and extending along the outer edge of one of the legs of the said first section, eyes for .attachment of plumb-lines, one at the top of the first section and the other et ihe lower end of the second section, spirit-levels secured in thesecond section,^one in its top, one in its Vertical edge, and the third in a transverse opening in the body thereof, and a scale adj ustable in the guideway of the first section-head, and having its reading edge eqnidistant from the legs, substantially as herein shown and described.
