UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM S. \VINTERBOITOM, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
ATTACH M ENT TO SQUARES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 329,353, dated October 27, 1885.
- Application filed February 20, 1885. Serial No. 156, 506.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM S. WINTER- BOTTOM, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Attachments to Squares, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which Figure lrepresents a side elevation of an attachment to a square embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents an end view thereof.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
My invention consists of an attachment to a square for the purpose of laying out or measuring angles other than the right angle of the square.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a tri-square formed of a stock or handle and blade, the end of the stock adjacent to the blade being diagonal, as at B. Pivoted to the blade near the angle of the square is an arm, 0, which is adapted to abut against the diagonal edgeB of the stock or the side D of said stock, said arm being slotted so that it may move freely over the blade, the said diagonal end of the stock being of use when measuring an angle of forty-five degrees, and the abutment of the one end of the arm against the side of the stock serving to determine a right angle, these angles being used as startingpoints. Connected with the sides of the arm 0 are plates E, which embrace the sides of the stock and are formed with segmental slots F to receive a screw, G, which, passing through the stock, is adapted, by means of a nut, H, to clamp the plates E against the stock, and thus hold the arm tightly in position. It will be seen that the arm may be moved from the position shown by the dotted lines, Fig. 1, to that shown by the full lines thereof, and also to the position when the arm rests against the (No model.)
diagonal end or face B of the stock and any intermediate positions. Consequently any angle between said positions may be laid, scribed, or measured by properly moving the arm, it being noticed that both acute and obtuse angles may be laid out, &c., as the arm projects in opposite directions from the blade, and that either side of the square may be used, so that the range of angular measurement, laying-out, &c., is increased. The arm in nowise interferes with the right angular value of the square.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new,and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A square having the end of the stock adjacent to the blade diagonal, provided with a slotted arm pivoted to the blade, and adapted to abut against either the side or end of the stock, substantially as described.
2. A square provided with an attachment for marking out angles between a right angle, consisting of a pivoted arm which is capable of abutting against the side or end of the stock of the square, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. A- square having a stock, A, provided with a diagonal end, and a blade, B, in combination with slotted arm O, pivoted to said blade, plates E, having slots F, secured to the said arm 0 on both sides of the stock A, and clamping devices.
4. A square having a stock, A, provided with a diagonal end, and a blade, B, in combination with a slotted arm pivoted to said blade, the said arm embracing said blade, which passes through the said slot, substan- 8o tially as described.
