HAT-PIN GUARD.
Application filed April 2, 1913.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OSEF JURKowsKI, a citizen of the United States, residing at Laporte, in the county of Laporte, State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat-Pin Guards; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
' This invention relates to improvements in hat pin guards.
One object of the invention is to provide a simple device of this character which can be securely clamped onto the pointed end of a hat pin after the pin has been stuck through the hat.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is an elevation of my device in use. Fig. 2 is an enlarged section through the pin point engaging portion.
Referring particularly to the accompanying drawings, 10 represents the shank of a pin which is inserted through the crown 11 of a hat, one end of said pin being provided with the usual ornamental head 12, while a point 13 protrudes beyond the other side of the crown.
The guard proper has a slightly elongated tapering shell 14: in the smaller end of which is formed an opening 15 to permit entrance of the point 13 of the pin, while in one side of the member 14 is formed an elongated slot 16 opening into the interior 17 of the guard. Disposed in the space 17 and mounted on the transverse pin 18 is the locking wedge member 19. The free end of this member 19 has a downwardly projecting bill 20 provided with an opening 21 which is adapted to register with the opening 15, when the parts are in operative position to receive the point of the pm. A V-shaped leaf spring 22 is secured at one of its ends to the under side of the member 19, as indicated at 23 and has its other end Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 29, 1914.

bearing against the bottom of the member 14L. A bail 24 is pivotally connected to the larger end of the member14, and has attached thereto at one of its ends a chain or cord 25, the opposite end being attached to a suitable clip 26 for engagement with the edge of the rim of the hat.
The normal tendency of the springv 22 is to swing the member 19 on its pivot so that its free end will project above the surface of the member 14, and when it is desired to use the device, after the clip 26 is secured to the rim of the hat, this member 19 is pushed downwardly into the member 14 and the point of the pin passed through the registering openings 15 and 21. When the memher is released, after having been placed on the pin, the spring lifts said member slightly and causes a wedging and binding action of the pointed portion of the pin against the edges of the openings 15 and 21. The guard 20 can easily be removed by simply pulling the same from the end of the pin, but the wedging action of the bill portion of the member 19 will'prevent any accidental displacement of the guard when in operative position.
It will be noted that when thepin point is passed through the openings of the bill and shell it will engage the lower inclined face of the member 19 to which the spring 22 is attached, and by reason of this arrangement the pin point will be deflected downward so that the pin will be slightly bent between this point of engagement and the point of engagement with the bill.
What is claimed is:
A hat pin guard comprising a shell havshell and secured to said inclined face, said springhaving a normal tendency to force the free end of the pivoted member through the elongated opening ofthe shell, an inwardly directed bill formed on the inner side of the pivoted member and provided with an opening adapted for registration the pointed end of the pin to deflect the With the said opening in the end Wall of the same from the point of Wedging action. 10 shell when the pivoted member is moved In testimony whereof, I aflix my signathereinto to receive the hat pin point thereture, in-the presence of tWo Witnesses. through, said spring being adapted to pro- J OSEF JURKOVVSKI.
duce a Wedging action on the pin Within Witnesses:
the openings 01' the shell and bill, said in- .JNO. 7B. DILWORTH,
ciined face being arranged to be engaged by MARTIN NEVOSKI.
