DEVICE FOR FASTENING REMOVABLE PINS TO BROOCHES.

Be it known that I, GEORGE E. BUTIN, of Fredonia, in the county of \Vilson and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Easterling Removablelins to Brooches; and I ,do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use. the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.

- My improvement relates to a new and novel fastening for breast-pins or safety-pins and like articles, having for its object to provide means whereby the pin, when it has become bent, worn, or broken, can be easily detached or removed from the brooch and readily replaced by a new one.

To this end the invention consists in such details of construction of parts as will be hereinafter described.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a bottom perspective view of a brooch, showing in dotted lines the movement of the retaining-plate on its pivot. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal side elevation, and Fig. 3 an end view showing the pivotal retainingplate in an open position.

My invention is designed for the purpose of enabling the owners or wearers of brooches to readily remove the pin when it has be-- come broken, and replace it by an ordinary pin without necessitating the employment of a jeweler, and thereby greatly reduce the expense of such repairs.

Reference being had to the several parts by letter, A represents a brooch of ordinary construction and design, and a the catch for the free end of the pin by which it is held in the garment. The opposite end of the brooch is provided with an offset, lug, or shoulder, B, that has an opening or hole, I), passing through it in the direction of length of the brooch,

which hole is preferably made to incline toward the point of the pin, whereby the pin is made to incline upward to give it a slight spring when inserted in the holder, and is for the passage therethrougli of the pin 0. The hole I) at the outer end face of the shoulder 13 is formed with a countersink, 0, so as to enable the head of the pin to be made flush with the surface of said shoulder. Pivoted to one side of this countersink by a small pivot, c, is a retaining-plate, D, having a small projection, d, by which, when it is closed down over the head of the pin, it is operated by the thumb or finger to be turned back or opened. The lower edge of this plate, when closed rests in a channel or space formed between the lug B and a strengthening and retaining rib or flange, 0, that is either formed with said lug or separate therefrom, and se cured to the brooch a suitable distance away in order that the space may be formed to receive the retaining-plate, as set forth. This flange 6 serves to prevent outward displace ment of the retaining plate that would be caused by the slight outward force given the pin as it is fastened and' unfastened.

It will be observed from the above description that my invention possesses many useful advantages, and it will be obvious that many varied forms of construction to that herein shown and described can be employed without departing-from its essential principle.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. A brooch having the catchc, and provided with the shoulder B, having the opening 1) formed with the countersink, the pin 0, and the means, substantially as shown, for retaining said pin in the shoulder. 2. The combination, with a brooch having catch a, of the shoulder B,'formed as described, the retaining-plate pivoted to said shoulder, and formed with the projection d, the pin 0, and flange or rib 0, all substantially as set forth and shown.

3. The combination, with the pin or brooch, of the removable pin, the lug B, and pivoted plate D, and the retaining device for said plate, substantially as described.
