UNITED STATES PATENT O FICE.

GEORGE E. COLMAN, OF BRANFORD, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- THIRD TO CHESTER W. PRANN, OF BRANFORD, CONNECTICUT.

DOOR-CHECK.

SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent N0. 717,813, dated January 6, 1903. Application filed October 31, 902. Serial No. 129,605. on model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE E. 'COLMAN, of Branford, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a newand useful ImprovementinDoor-Checks; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a f 1111, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in-

Figure 1,a perspective View of adoor-check constructed in accordance withimy invention; Fig. 2, a side view of the screw and washer A used in connection therewith; Fig. 3, a side view, partially in section, of the knob and retaining-screw; Fig. 4, a sectional view on the line a b of Fig. 3; Fig. 5, a side view of the socket detached; Fig. 6, a plan view of a blank frornwhich the socket is formed.

This invention relates to an improvement in door-checks or, as they are sometimes called, base-knobs, and particularly to that class which are adapted to coact with a catch of some character to hold the door in an open position, the object of the invention being a simple and efiective construction which can be produced at a low cost of manufacture; and the invention consists in the construction hereinafter described, and particularly recited in the claims.

The knob A is formed from wood or other suitable material of the usual form and provided with the usual screw B, by which it may be attached to the base-board or face of a door. In the outer end of the knob, where the usual rubber button is placed, I form a comparatively deep longitudinal circular recess C, and in this recess I insert a metallic sleeve D,contracted near its outer end, forming a neck E, and provided with a flaring mouth F. Preferably, and as herein shown, this sleeve is formed from a piece of sheet metal, as shown in Fig. 6, havinga centrallyarranged longitudinal slit G. The metal on opposite sides of the slit is formed into semicircular shape and the parts then bent together to form a sleeve, the edges H I when brought together forming a longitudinal slot J and so as to give additional spring to the neck of the sleeve; but it is apparent that this sleeve might be formed from a piece of tubing'slit on bpposite sides. In connection with this knob I employ a screw K, having a round head L and a rubber disk M, through which the screw K extends, the disk being formed in its rear face with a recess N,so as to produce a spring-cushion. The length of the screw or the projection beyond the face of the door or base-board is such that when the knob bears against the rubber washer M the head of the screw will stand just within the neck E of the spring-socket and so as to be partially interlocked therewith, yet capable of being easily separated. If desired, a setscrew 0 may be inserted transversely through the knob, so as to bear upon one side of the spring-socket, the inward movement of this screw tending to contractthe socket and so as to cause itto bind to a greater extent upon the head L of the screw, thus compensating for wear and loss of elasticity in the metal.

I am aware that base-knobs have been provided with rubber sockets adapted to be used in connection with studs or members having heads adapted to be engaged therewith, and therefore do not wish to be understood as claiming, broadly, such as my invention.

Having'fully described my invention, what I claim as new,and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isr 1. A base-knob having a longitudinal recess in its outer end, a tubular metallic springsocket located therein, said socket formed with a contracted neck near its outer end, and V a screw having a head adapted to enter within the neck of the socket.

2. A base-knob having a longitudinal recess in its outer end, a spring-socket located therein, and atrausverse screw extending into the knob and bearing upon one side of the socket, substantially as described.

In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.

GEORGE E. COLMAN.
