I awvewto'z whom/Lug I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HORACE L. DODGE, OF HORNELLSVILLE, NEIV YORK.
DOOR-CHECK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 444,338, dated January 6, 1891.
Application filed October 9, 1890. Serial No. 367,538. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HORACE L. DODGE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Hornellsville, in the county of Steuben and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door Stops and Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in door-checks.
The object of the invention is to provide a door-check which will be simple in construction and effective in operation; and it consists of two parts, one of which is carried by the door and the other attached to the baseboard.
The invention further consists in the construction and combination of the parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the parts separated and partly in section. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of both parts of the device, and Fig. 3 is a detail view of the casting secured to the door.
A refers to the stop, which is secured to the base-board in the usual manner, the outer end thereof having a circular recess a, within which is forced a rubber collar A of a slightlygreater diameter than the diameter of said recess, so that it will be retained in the recess when forced therein. This collar has its outer portion a slightly beveled and is tapered interiorly from near its front end rearwardly, as shown.
B refers to a casting, which is provided with a central raised portion having an oval opening 1) formed therein, and beneath the opening the front wall of this casting projects to provide behind the same a recess within which will lie the bent end of the shank of the knob D. The edges of this casting B are provided with countersunk openings 0', through which pass ordinary screws for attaching the same to the door.
E refers to a plate having the same contour as the casting B, and this plate is placed beneath the casting 13 prior to attaching the fixture to the door. The knob D is preferably of the shape shown, being pointed, and the shank (1 thereof extends inwardly and downwardly, so as to lie within the casting B. The portion of the shank adjacent to the knob is preferably of less diameter than the depending portion thereof. By providing the casting B with an opening of greater width than height the knob can have a lateral movement in said casting as well as a slight vertical play, which makes the same self-adjusting. When the knob is placed within the fixture and secured to a door, the parts will be held upon each other against displacement. The rubber collar within the fixture A will have sufficient elasticity to retain the knob and hold the door open when forced within the collar. By providing a rubber collar of the construct-ionshown and a knob having a greater diameter than the opening in said collar, when the parts are brought in contact the air within the recess will be compressed and not permitted to escape until the knob has passed within the thick portion of the collar, thus rendering the stop much more effective.
This device can be cheaply manufactured, and though I refer to the part B as a casting it is obvious that it maybe stamped from metal.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is-
In a door check or holder, a stop having a recess within which is located an elastic collar, in combination with a fixture comprising casting B, carrying a vertical shank freely turning therein, and having ahorizontally- .projecting knob adapted to snugly enter the stop-recess and be frictionally retained by the elastic collar therein, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HORACE L. DODGE.
