Wb. @mb-www UNITED STATES- PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES KUNZE, OF NEVARK, NE\V JERSEY.
CLASP FOR BOXES.
EFECIFICATIONV forming part. of Letters Patent No. 361,424, dated April 19, 188.7.
Application filed January 3l, 1887. Serial No. 225,952. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES KUNZE, of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, haveinvented certain newy and useful Improvements in Clasps for Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in the clasps for cigarand other boxes, for which Letters Patent were granted to me heretofore, No. 333,640, and dated January 5, 1886, whereby the construction of the clasp is simplified, inasmuch as the recessing of the frontV wall of the box is dispensed with, and the same ready for use as soon as the same is attached to the body and lid of the box.
The'invention consists of a clasp for cigar and other boxes, in which a spring-plate of elastic sheet metal is attached to the-front edge and top of the lid, said spring-plate having an opening at its lower part, which opening is engaged by forwardly-bent and tapering projections or hooks made integral with a front plate and abutting at their lower ends at right angles to the same, said front plate being attached to the front wall of the boxbody, so as to lock the lidto said body.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l represents a front view of a box with my improved clasp. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section of the same on line x at, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail View of the blank front which the spring-plate of the lid is made, and Fig. 4is a detail ,view of the blank from which the front plate of the box-body is made.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the body and B the lid of the cigar or other boxl To the frontcdge and top of the lid is attached a spring-plate, C, that is made of elastic sheet metal and integral with a plate, C', having perforated ears a a, by which said plate is attachcd to the front edge and top of the lid. For this purpose the plate C is bent at right angles to the spring-plate C and attached to the lid by fastening-nails, that are driven through the perforated ears of the plate C into theedge of the lid, while a third nail is driven through thelid and clinched at the under side of said lid, as shown in Fig. 2. The lower end of said spring-plate C is provided with an 'angles to the plate toward the upper end, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4, so that the springplate C passes readily along the tapering edges of the hooks d d, and finally engages, by
the opening b, the lower edges of the same,
which edges abut at right angles to the plate D, as shown in Figs. l and 2.
In opening the lid, the front wall of the body A is pressed inwardly until the spring plate C clears the projections or hooks of the front plate, D. By thus arranging the hooks or projections d d on the front plate of the box-body, the recessing of the front wall below the front plate is dispensed with, and the clasp is complete and ready for use as soon as the spring-plate C and front plate, D, are attached in their respective positions to the lid and front wall of the box. As these boxes are ordered in large quantities, the aggregate of time and labor saved in the use of the clasps forms an inducement to manufacturers to use the same.
Having thus described 1n yinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of a front plate attached .to the body of a box, said plate having for-
