Description

U ITED TATES PATENT NATHANIEL WATERBURY, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
IMPROVEMENTIN spoot-oAsss.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l92,038, dated June l2, 1877 {application filed April. 13, 1577.
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, NATHANIEL WATER BURY, of Baltimore, in the county of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements --in Spool or Work Gases; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my im proved spool or work case, and Fig.- 2 isa vertical section thereof.
Gorrespondingparts in the two figures are denoted by like letters.
' held down therein by elastic straps or hands;
secondly. in passing the thread directly through the said elastic straps or bands; and,
' lastly, of a plate or knife attached to the box and a strip of elastic material attached to the cover, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth. In the annexed drawing, A refers to a box or other receptacle, which is partitioned oif into compartments a a, to receive spools of thread, 860., and preferably of varying dimensions, to receive spools of different sizes. Across these compartments are secured elastic straps or bands B B, fastened to the partitions a at. These bands or straps, beneath which the spools are inserted, hold the latter down in the compartments a a, and at the same time, by reason of their elasticity, they adapt themselves to the size of the spools, and also contract as the size of the spool diminishes from the unwinding of the thread therefrom, thus retaining the spools in place at all stages of the unwinding of the thread.
It will be seen thatthe cotton or thread is preferably passed through apertures in the elastic bands or straps B B, to control its unwinding.
To one end of the box A is attached a plate or knife, b, for severing the thread or cotton, and which is also so arranged with reference to a piece of elastic material, 0, on the cover as that, when the latter is brought down upon the box or receptacle, the said elastic material will be wedged in between the said plate and cover, and thus hold the cover down upon the box in a closed position.
U is the cover, suitably hinged to the box or receptacle A, and partitioned off into compartmentsd d to receive and allow the cover to fit down upon the spools when the cover is brought down upon the box.
To allow the cover to fit' down flush upon the box, it is made with recesses to receive the fastenings of the elastic straps or hands The box or receptacle maybe ornamented with any desired configuration.
If desired, the elastic block or material 0 may be dispensed with as a fastening for the cover by constructing the plate or knife I) so as to act as a spring to clamp the cover in place when brought down upon the case.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and'desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. The box or case A, having a number of compartments conforming in shape to and receiving spools of thread, in combination with, and held down therein by, elastic straps or bands B B, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The box or receptacle A, having the plate or knife I), in combination with the cover 0, having the elastic material 0, which, when the cover is closed, will be wedged in between the said plate and cover, and thus fasten the latter in place, substantially as set forth.
3. The box or receptacle A, having a number of compartments to .receive spools of thread, and elastic straps or bands B B, directly through which the thread is passed, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I hereunto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses. NATHANIEL WATERBURY. Witnesses:
H. H. YOUNG, OTTO BENNER.
