TONGUE-AND-SLOT COUPLING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 15, 1918.
Application filed March 14, 1918. Serial No. 222,308.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, RAYMOND J. MCBREEN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of New'York, borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tongue-and-Slot Couplings, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to produce simple and eflicient complementary interlocking members for all manner of purposes in which the tongue is concealed, and in a form which will make it a good glove, garment, overshoe or other fastening device or coupling. It is intended to make it of various sizes, of various weights of material, for all purposes for which it can be used.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof and illustrating the principle in the best mode now known to me of applying such principle,
Figures 1 and 2 are top plan views respectively of the tongue-receiving member and of the tongue, each attached to material.
Figs. 3 and 4. are respectively side elevations of what is shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
Fig. 5 is a top plan view of the interlocking members assembled.
Fig. 6 is a sectional elevation at line 6-6 of Fig. 5, of the interlocking members assembled.
Referring to the drawings, a; and y indicate materials or things to which the tongue and tongue-receiving member are respectively attached. As shown, the tongue is formed with a base portion 1 from which a tubular fastening member 2 depends, and passing through the material is upset on its free end. Any other mode of securing the tongue to the goods or material may be used. As shown, the base member is bent upward and then horizontally at 8 over the base. The head or free end portion of the tongue is indicated by 4. Rearwardly of its front edge the tongue head is oppositely edgewiserecessed at 5, each recess 5 being extended into a forwardly extending enlargement 6. The neck 7 of the tongue between the recesses 5 and enlargements 6 is bent downwardly so that the tongue portion 3 and its head 4 are at different levels to bring the rearwardlyextendin lobes or points 8 of the head (such 10 es being formed by the opposite Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the "Commissioner of Patents,
edge recesses 5 and the enlargements 6) below the under side of the tongue portion 3.
The base 9 of the tongue-receiving member is shown attached to the material y by its upset dependent tubular portion 10. Any other mode of securing it to the material may be used. The base 9 at one side of the fastening member 10 has an extension 11 that is bent upwardly and then outwardly and horizontally, forming a cover leaf; and at the other side of the fastening member has an extension that is bent upwardly and then inwardly between its bottom portion and the cover leaf 11 to form the intermediate tongue-engaging leaf 12 which is spaced apart from the base and also from the cover leaf. The tongue-engaging leaf projects only part way through the clear space between the base and the cover plate, and its inner edge is formed with a lengthwise-extending recess 13.
The two complementary interlocking or coupling members are coupled by inserting the tongue head between the cover leaf and tongue-engaging leaf so as to bring the tongue neck 7 into the recess 13 of the tongue-engaging leaf 12, and the lobes 8 under the adjacent under margin of the inward end of the tongue-engaging leaf. In this position they remain coupled under slight opposing strains on the materials; and may be readily uncoupled by easy manipulation. As shown, both sides as well as the tongue-receiving end of the tongue-receiving member are open. The lobes 8 are not essential in all cases and the form of the tongue head and tongue-engaging leaf may be varied without departure from this invention. The contours of the two complementary members may be varied.
What I claim is: 1. Complementary couplmg members, one
-being a tongue-receivlng member provided with a cover leaf and an under leaf spaced apart from the cover leaf, and having a recessed free end; and the other member being a tongue having opposed edge recesses and a bent neck.
2. In the structure of claim 1, the tongue having rearwardly-extending lobes.
In testimony wheof I have hereunto set my hand this 25th day of February. 1918.
RAYMOND J. MoBREEN.
