Description

UNITED STATES PATENT Grates,
BENJAMIN S. ATWOOD, OF SOUTH ABINGTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
HINGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 246,28L dated August 30, 1881.
Application filed July 8, 12581. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, BENJAMIN S. ATwooD, of South Abingtou, in the county of Plymouth and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinges, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates more especially to that class of hinges which are used on boxes and cases, and is an improvement upon the hinge described in my application for Letters Patent filed May-15, 1880.
In the drawings, I have shown, in Figure l, a plan of my improved hinge attached to the side ofa box and open, and in Fig. 2, a sectional view of the same on line at y.
A represents the side ofa box with the hinge attached. D is the cover of the same.
0 is a piece of wire, bent in the form shown in Fig.3,open atits ends, and sprung by means of these open ends into a knuckle, d, on the part (I. The part d is made of a thin piece of metal, bent so as to form the knuckle (1 for the reception of the bent ends of the part 0, which are sprung into it. The part (1 is also so bent as to clasp the cover B, to which it is to be attached by rivets or screws, as shown in the drawings. The part 0 passes through the slit 6 of the metallic plate 6, a perspective View of which is shown in Fig. 4. This plate is bent at right angles at one end, and the slit 0 therein is placed just above the inside surface of the side of the box to which it is attached. to which it is attached by means of the screws or rivetsff. The part c is also fastened to the side of the box A to which the hinge is to be attached by means of the staple g.
The hinge described, embodying my invention, possesses great strength, and is much stronger than any hinge now in use of the same weight.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Let-- ters Patent, is
The combination, in a hinge for a box or case, of the plate d, provided with the knuckle d, the plate 0, having the slot 6 therein, and the bent wire a.
