Description

(Model.)'
T. M. HASS.
STOP HINGE.
N0.'284,008. V Patented Aug. 28, 1883.
WITNESSES INVENTOR i I BY ATTORN UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THEODORE M. HASS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
STOP-HINGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 284,008, dated August 28, 1883.
' Application filed March 12,1883. (ModeL) To all wliom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THEODORE M. HASS, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stop-Hinges for Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to an improved stop-hinge for jewelry, fancy, and other boxes; and the invention consists of a stop -hinge made of two doubled-up leaves, of which one is provided with pintle-sleeves and intermediate stop-flanges, the latter bent up from the body of the leaf, while the second leaf is provided with pintle-sleeves fitting intermediately between those of the first leaf, the pintlesleeves of both leaves being connected by a pintle which is fully inclosed when the hinge is in open or closed position.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a box with my improved hinge. Figs. 2 and 3 are vertical transverse sections of the same on a larger scale, showing the hinge respectively in open and folded position. Figs. 4 and 5 are details of the leaves forming the hinge; and Figs. 6 and 7 are vertical transverse sections of the same, respectively, on lines :0 w and 3 y.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A and B in the drawings represent the leaves of my improved box-hinge, and C is the pin tle that connects the sleeves of the leaves. The leaves A B are made of doubled-up sheet metal, the pintle-sleeves of which are formed in bending the leaves over a suitable mandrel. The leaf A is provided intermediately between its pintle-sleeves a a and at both ends with stop flanges or shoulders b b, which are located at right angles or at any other suitable angle to the body of the leaf A, for the purpose of abutting thereby against the sleeves d d of the leaf B, and retaining thereby the lid of the box at right angles or at any other suitable angle of inclination to the body of the box, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
By the construction described a neat and reliable box-hinge is obtained which can be manufactured at a low price, as the leaves can be stamped up in the press and then connected by the pintle.
My improved stop hinge presents a continuous hinge throughout its length, whether the leaves are in open or closed position, as'the pintle is fully inclosed in the open or closed position of the hinge. This is an essential feature of my invention, as the same is used for fancy boxes in which the hinges are so arranged as to be seen from the inside and outside.
I am aware that boxhinges with abutting stop-shoulders in both leaves have been used heretofore, and I therefore do not claim a hinge with stop flanges or shoulders, broadly.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- In a stop-hinge, the combination of the doubled-up leaf A, having pintle-sleeves a a and intermediate stop-flanges, b b, bent up from the body of the leaf, with a connecting-pintle,
0, and doubled-up leaf B, having pintle-sleeves fitting intermediately between the pintlesleeves of the leaf A, whereby the pintle is fully inclosed whether the hinge is in open or closed position, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
I THEODORE M. HASS.
