LOUIS HILLEBRAND, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO DANIEL WOLF, OF SAME PLACE.
HINGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 393,305, dated November 20, 1888.
Application filed June 29, 1883. Serial No. 278,511. (ModeL) T0 all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LOUIS HILLEBRAND, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hingesand Hasps, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
My invention consists in the construction of a hinge or hasp having aleaf, one end whereof is bent or curled into the form of a cylinder constituting an axis, whereby a pintle as such is dispensed with and a strong and serviceable hinge is produced.
The invention also consists in recessing the leaf to receive a knuckle or ear which is se-- cured to the attaching-plate and embraces the cylindrical portion or axis of the leaf, thus firmly retaining said leaf in position.
Figure 1 represents a face View of a hinge embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents an end view thereof. Fig. 3 represents a section on line a: m, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 represents a face view of a hasp embodying my invention. Fig. 5 represents a section on line y y, Fig. 4.. Fig. 6 representsa face view of the leaf thereof.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings, A, Figs. 1 and 2, represents one of the leaves of a hinge, and B represents the other leaf or bottom attachingplate thereof.
The leaf A, which is constructed of sheet metal, has its inner or axial end bent into the form of a cylinder, 0, which is embraced'in part by a knuckle or car, D, the latter being riveted or otherwise secured to the plate B. The portion of the leaf A adjacent to the ear D is cut out or recessed within its side edges, as at a, to receive the Wall of the ear D and permit said leaf to rotate or turn on said ear, it being evident that the ear prevents disconnection of the leaf and plate.
It will be seen that the leaf A may be turned or swung on the plate 13, the cylinder 0 forming the axis of said leaf and the ear D forming the bearing for said axis; it being also seen that a pintle or rod usually employed in a hinge and passed through the knuckles thereof is dis pensed with and a strong and durable and servg the knuckle or ear and therecess of the same.
In Figs. 4, 5, and 6 theimproveinent is shown as applied to ahinged lock-hasp, the swinging part of the hasp corresponding to the leaf A of the hinge and having the cylindrical axis 0 and bearing D therefor, the hasp being also provided with a spring for throwing out the part A, when so desired. In this case the leaf is provided with two recesses, a a, with a neck, a, between them, as seen in Figs. 4 and 6, and the ear or knuckle D has a slot to allow theleaf to revolve the required extent, limited by said neck which enters the slot and acts as a stop against the wall thereof.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A sheet-metal hinge having a base or attaching plate, a separate arch-shaped cover or ear fastened thereto, and a leaf with a curled end, said end being encircled by said cover or car, the parts being combined substantially as described.
2. A hinge or hasp consisting of a leaf with about or cylindrical end portion and a slot parallel to said cylindrical end, an attaching-plate, and a separate knuckle or ear suitably secured to said attaching-plate, said parts being combined substantially as described.
3. A sheet-metal hinge or hasp consisting of an attachingplate, a leaf with a cylindrical end portion and having slots forming a neck between the same, and an ear secured to said plate and having a portion of one of its Walls passing through said slotsin the leaf, the neck of the leaf working in a slot in said ear, said parts being combined substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
L. HILLEBRAND.
