IMPROVED HINGE.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 44,608. dated October 11, 1864.

To all 'whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOSEPH V. C. CRATE, of Waterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and Improved Hinge; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specifica-y tion, in which- Figure l is a transverse section of my invention, taken in the line w m, Fig. 3; Fig. 2, a transverse section of the same, taken in the line y y, Fig. 3; Fig. 3, a side View of the same.

This invention relates to a new and improved butt-hinge; and it consists in providing the hinge with a stop arranged in such a manner as not to augment the cost of construction over the ordinary butt-hinge and still be equally as strong and durable as the ordinary butt-hinges without stops.

The eyes a a of the leaf' A are in Contact wit-h the outer sides of the eyes a a ot' the leaf A', and a space about equal in width to an eye is allowed between the eyes a u. This plate B is bent or curved at its center, as shown at c, so that-it may fit in between the pint-le b and the .inner edges of the leaves A A', and the ends of plate B are bent or curved, as shown at d d, so as to form rests or stops for the leaves A A and prevent the same being opened beyond a right angle. (See Figs. l and 2.) By this simple arrangement I obtain a stJp for a butt-hinge of ordinary construction without augmenting the cost of the construction of the same. v butt-hinges provided with stops, but some of them are not provided with a separate or independent pintle like an ordinary butt-hinge, and they are liable to break and give way, so as to be perfectly useless. Others which have a separate or independent pintle and a stop are comparatively expensive to manufacture.

My invention admits of the hinge being made as strong and durable as the ordinary butt-hinge, the separate or independent pin tle b being of iron, while the stop B acts in the most efficient manner.

I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A stop composed of a separate metal plate, bent or curved. and inserted in a space between the two eyes of the hinge and between the pintle and the inner edges of the leaves,

which abut against said stop, and all coi;-`
