I l Hereto'fore it has been usual to form the hinge-joint ot. wrought hinges by turning the sheet metal over` to form the tube furthe hinge-pin, and torivot up one or both ends of the seid hinge-pin after it is in place. This operation frequently bends the hinge-pin, preventing the hinge opening Or closing freely, and the rivet heads at theends of thepin are'ough end-unsightly I f,

yThe nature of my suidinvention consists in n pin for hinges formed with n solid head at both ends previous to being htroducedinto the hingefso that the rivetingl upof, the head is effected independent ofthe hinge, and hence the said hinge-pin een befmade with two perfect heads nndn straight shank, and when introduced vin the hin'gecuuses' the same to be muchdimre perfect, both in appearance and construction, than the hinge-pins' riveted lip-after they nre introduced into the hinge.' l, i

In the drawing, a represents the-riveted ends or heads el" thehlngepin b. These heads are solid with the pin, arid formed upon said pin' by suitable machinery that shall preserve t'he size and straiglxtness of the pin nhile the heudsfere being pressed orriveted up, or said pin may -be formed of' malleableV metal., and trued byv suitable turning or-millingltools.: The Istrap-hingos are formed of the halves c und d, with tongues e e on the part e that are to be bent up toA a U-forml with the stl-up, and receive the hinge-pin 6,` us seen by red lines in fig. 2. The tongues e e are. then closed doivnnround the hingepin by' any usual orsuitable dies. The tonguefof the strep d is then to be hooked inuround rthe hinge-pin b, und closed down around the same to complete the' construction of the hinge-joint. By Ihisvmethod'o forniug the hingejoint, the pin will not bebent or injured, because the dies employed to bend down the tongues keep the uetal of saidtongucs in the proper position, so

'that there is no tendency te bend the hinge-pin. With enst hinges my said pin, with the riveted heads, can be -`coatedwith cla-.5! Or other suitable material; to prevent the adhesion of' the casting, and leid in the mould, n nd the hinge will be of the bestichnfrecter, b eeeuse the p'in will be perfectly strniglxtn`nd the heads nt the ends will e'eetuall'yt prevent the pin being driven out.
