IMPROVEMENT IN BUTT-HINGES.

Specification forming part o'f Letters Patent No. 41,4564, dated February 16, 1864.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ROBERT HOADLEY, of Derby, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Adjustable Butt-Hinges; and I do hereby declare the following to Vbe a full, clear, and exact description of the same, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, and which said drawingsconstitute part of this specification, and represent, in-

Similar letters and characters indicate like parts.

My invention relates particularly to butthinges designed to open only to a given point, as for boxcovers, 85e. In the butthinges now constructed for that purpose the stop which prevents the opening of the hinge is fixed andcannot be changed.

The object of my invention is therefore to produce a butt-hinge with a stop which may he adjusted so that the hinge may be opened to any required distance, and prevent its being opened beyond that point.

To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.

I cut the two parts A and B of my hinge from sheet metal, and bend the part A, all in the usual manner, ready to receive the wire which is to form thejoint and in like manner I bend the upper and lower ends, a and b, of the other part, B, but the center portion, c, I turn in around the wire, as see Fig. 2, allowing the end to project, as see Figs. 1, 2, and 3. I then put the two parts together and in! sert a wire, t', in the usual manner to form the joint. I then bend the projecting end c, so that as the hinge is opened the part A (see in red, Fig. 2) c, which may be so as to stop the opening at right angles, as shown, or any desired angle within the range of the opening hinge. This adjustment can be made by the person using the hinges, he bending the stop to the required angle.

I do not broadly claim a hinge provided with a stop, as such are not seen; but

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

Constructing and adjusting the stop c in the manner described, so that the butt may be opened or set at any required angle.
