BINDER WITH LABEL 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Filed May 2s, 1968v United States Patent O 3,544,230 BINDER WITH LABEL Jarl-Erik S. I. Ohlsson, 27 Hannebergsgatan, 171 47 Solna, Sweden Filed May 23, 1968, Ser. No. 731,451 Claims priority, application Sweden, June 1, 1967, 7,672/ 67 Int. Cl. B42f 21 /00 U.S. Cl. 402-3 2 Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE This invention relates to a label for such binders as have a back consisting of two hingedly connected halves, where it is desired that the label extend across both back halves. The label which is made of essentially rigid, striplike material, has a center portion extending across the back, and projections bent down at the ends of said center portion and adapted to project through slits extending longitudinally of the back and provided at the marginal edges thereof. The projections are intended in the closed position of the back to engage with the slit edges adjacent the back center, thereby to hold the center portion of the label in engagement with the back, whereas the engagement of the projections with the said edges is released, when the binder is opened and the projections are moved through the slits so that during the continued opening movement at least one end of said center portions can extend a distance through one or the other of said slits.
This invention relates to a label for attachment to such binders as have a back consisting of two rigid, hingedly connected halves.
The main features of the invention are that the label is of essentially rigid strip-like material and has a preferably arcuate ccntre portion substantially conforming to the cross section of the closed back, and at the ends of said arcuate centre portion has bent-down projections adapted to project through slits extending longitudinally of the back and provided at the edges thereof and having a width exceeding the thickness of the label, the inner side of each bent-down projection being adapted, when the binder is closed, to engage in the manner of a hook with the edge of each slit located adjacent the centre of the back so that the centre portion is held in engagement with the rear face of the back, whereas the engagement of the bent-down projections is released when the binder is open, at least one end of the centre portion extending through one of the slits.
A preferred embodiment of the label f the invention in position on a binder will be described more in detail in the following, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which:
FIG. 1 shows the labelled binder with its back closed, as seen from the rear;
FIG. 2 shows the binder in the same position, as seen from in front;
FIG. 3 is a cross section of the back of the binder, the back still being in closed position; and
FIG. 4 is a cross section of the back of the binder in open position.
The binder is preferably made in one piece of flexible plastic material and has a back comprising two halves 1 and 2 interconnected by a hinge 3 and each connected via hinges 4 and 5 with the binder covers 6 and 7. The back halves 1 and 2 are adapted to be locked together by means of a locking mechanism (not shown) and are provided with prongs or like means for holding the documents inserted in the binder. Examples of binders of this type are found in the patent to F. C. Skiles, Pat. No.
1,667,744, issued May 1, 1928, and the patent to W. Nelson, Pat. No. 2,056,801, issued Oct. 6, 1936.
The back carries a label 8 extending across the two halves 1 and 2 of the back. According to the invention, the label 8 consists of an arcuate, predominantly rigid centre portion 9 conforming to the arcuate shape of the rear face 10 of the closed back and has a width somewhat less than the width across the back. Projections 11 are provided at each end of the centre portion 9 and extend through slits 12 adjacent the outer edge of each back half 1, 2. Each projection 11 has a bent-down portion 13 extending obliquely inwardly from the end of the arcuate portion 9, and a narrow tongue 14 deflected in the opposite direction and extending outwardly as viewed from the label.
As will be best seen from FIG. 3, the inner sides of the bent-down portions 13 are adapted to engage in the closed position of the back in the manner of hooks with the inner edges of the slits 12, and the centre portion 9 of the label will be held against the rear face 10 of the back. As will appear from FIG. 4, this engagement ceases when the back is opened, and at least one of the two ends of the centre portion 9 will slide a certain distance through one of the apertures 12, without breaking the portion 9.
The deflected tongues 14 of the label projections 11 serve to facilitate the positioning of the label at the recesses 12 in the back. The tongues at the ends of the label will then be urged against the inner edges of the apertures 12, and the arcuate portion 9 will then be so bent that the projections can readily snap into the slits 12.
The arrangement can be such that the label is constituted by the centre portion 9 itself, or the label can be transparent, and then a loose label or rigid paper or the like is inserted between the projections 11 on the inner side of the label portion 9. The loose label or card will have a length which corresponds to the length of the label center portion 9 and is held in place between the projections 11 and by the inside of center portion 9 and the surfaces of the back halves 1 and 2. When the back is opened the loose label or card will remain in its position along the inside of center portion 9.
The invention is not limited to the embodiment described above and illustrated in the drawing, but can be modified in several ways within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A binder with a la'bel comprising a binder having a back of two rigid, hingedly connected halves, a cover foldably connected to each of said back halves, and having a slot in each of said back halves extending along the outer edges of said back halves, said back halves forming a substantially continuous arcuate surface in the closed position and pivoted to back to back position in an open position, and
a label detachably fastened to said binder across said back halves including a strip of essentially rigid material having a center portion substantially conforming to the curvature of the outer surface of said back in a closed position, and bent in hooking portions extending along parallel ends of said center portion i received in and projecting through said slots, said hooking portions held in engagement with the inner edge of said respective slots in the closed position of said back halves, holding said center portion of said label in engagement with the rear face of said back,
each said slot having a width greater than the thickness of said strip material for slidingly receiving said center portion therethrough when said back halves are moved to an open position.
2. The binder with a label of claim 1, further characterized by said label having atileast one end of said bent in hooking portions located at one end of said center portion, a tongue deected in the opposite direction from said bent-in portion.
