WILLIAM ROPER, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
HINGE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 8, 1911.
Patented Dec. 19, 1911.
Serial N 0. 607,249.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM ROPER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinges, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in hinges, and more particularly to hinges adapted for use in connection with rolled steel sashes or transoms of the pivoted or hinged type, the object of the invention being to provide a hinge of this character which will embody the maximum of strength and durability and limit the opening or pivotal movement of the sash or transom.
A further object is to provide a hinge of this character which may be manufactured at a comparatively low cost, and which will be neat and attractive in appearance when in operative position.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1, is a fragmentary view in longitudinal section illustrating the position of my improved hinge when applied to an'ordinary hinged or pivoted transom, and Fig; 2, is a perspective View of the hinge removed.
1, represents a section of the transom and 2 a section of the frame, which are connected by my improved hinge. The hinge comprises two leaves 3 and 4 both having openings 5 for the reception of securing devices 6 to secure the leaves to the transom 1 and the frame 2. Both of these leaves 3 and t are made with integral side flanges 7 which merge into the body of the leaf at the free end and incline or increase in width toward the meeting ends of the leaves.
Leaf 3 is made with an integral knuckle 8 which is positioned between the flanges 7 of leaf 4 and registers with openings in said Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
flanges for the reception of a hinge pin 9. The flanges 7 of the leaves 3 and 4 at their hinged connection appreciably project outwardly and form shoulders as shown at 10 forming abutting shoulders which engage each other when the transom is opened and limit the opening movement of the transom.
By constructing a hinge of this character, I provide at the pivot thereof, two pairs of contacting shoulders which are integral with the leaves and which are supported I myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: v
A hinge of the character described, comprising two leaves, one leaf having an integral knuckle at one end, side flanges on both leaves, the flanges on one leaf projecting beyond the main portion of the leaf and located beside the ends of the knuckle of the first-mentioned leaf and having openings registering with the knuckle, a pivot pin in said openings and knuckle, and shoulders on said leaves limiting the pivotal movement thereof, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM ROPER.
Witnesses: CHAS. E. Porrs, R. H. KRENKEL.
