HINGE.
Specification 01 Letters Batent.
Patented May 12,1914.
Application filed August 23', ms. Serial No. 788,292.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL Soss, a citi-;
zen of the United States, and residing at- New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinges, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to hinges for doors, gates, window sashes and other articles and particularly to what are known as invisible hinges, or hinges which cannot be seen when the door, gate, sash or other article to which the hinges are applied is in a, closed position, and the object of the invention is to provide an improved hinge or hinges of this class which are simple in construction and by means of which the door, gate, sash, or other article may be given any desired throw, or may be swung through an arc of any desired extent according to the construction of the hinge or hinges, which construction may be regulated or modified as may be desired.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawin forms a part, in which the separate parts 0 my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which- Figure 1 is a view showing a hinge made according to my invention, applied to a door, the door being open and only part of the door and part of the door frame being shown ;--F-1g. 2 a sectional view showing the door closed and showing the door frame and door and the butts of the hinges in section ;--Fig. 3 a cross section on the line 33 of Fig. 1, and on an enlarged scale ;--Fig. 4 a front view showing a modified form of hinge, and showing it open, and ;-Fig. 5 a perspective view of one link member used in the construction of my improved hinge, and a number of which are employed.
In the accompanying drawing I have shown at a a part of a door frame and at be, part of a door and at c, in Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive, one of my improved hinges in the preferred form.
In the construction of my improved hinge, as shown in Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive, I ro videtwo hinge butts d which are preferably of the usual form and comprise yoke'shape'd body portions adapted to be countersunk in the door frame and door and prow'ded with screws e whereby the hinge or hinge butts are secured in position in the door frame and door.
The hinge butts d may be stamped from sheet metal or cast, but said hinge butts, when too great strength is not required, are preferably stamped from sheet metal, and the central yoke-shaped body portions of SEl-ld hinge butts are provided slightly inwardly of their corresponding side edges with inwardly set flanges d which extend the full length of the body portions of said hinge butts, and the correspondin end ortions of the flanges (Z are provide with ongitnd'inal slots d which extend ap roXimately from a third to a half of the length of said flanges.
The movable part of my improved hinge or hinges consists of a toggle lever construction 0 made up, in the form of construction shown. of three pairs of link members, a central pair and two side pairs, said side pairs and central pair being connected at a, and one link member of each side pair is pivoted to one of the flanges d oi the butts at o, and the other link members of the side pens are provided with pins 0 movable in the slots d.
All the link members used in the construction of the movable parts of my improved hinge or hinges are arc-shaped in form, or formed on the arc of a circle, and the curvature of the inner link members a is referably slightly less than the curvature o the outer link members a, and in practice, the inner link members 0 are also preferabl made slightly shorter than the outer lin members 0', but this is immaterial in the operation of the hinge, and in the case of a light hinge, in which the link members are made of thin material, the curvature of the inner link members need not necessarily be greater than the curvature of the outer link members.
In the preferred form of construction, as shown in Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive, the end poror side pairs are flattened, as shown at (For bent at an angle to the body portion of said link members so that said ends will rest flatl on the flanges cl of the butts, and this construction will'facilitate the operation of end projections di through which are passedtions of the-link members of the outer pairs the hinge especially when said flanges are made straight and parallel with the side edges of said butts.
The link members of the separate pairs of links, in the toggle lever construction are connected at 0 in the usual manner, and in the accompanying drawing, only three of said pairs of said link members are. shown, but it will be understood that the number of pairs of link members used in constructing the toggle lever part of my mproved hinge or hinges may be varied, or increased, and with the construction shown, the extent of the throw or swing of the door, gate, sash or other article to which the hinge or hinges are applied or the extent of the are through which the door or other article will swing, will depend upon the curvature of the link members which make up the separate pairs of links in the toggle lever construction, or, in other words, the extent of the swing or throw of the door or other article, or the extent of the are through which said door or other article swings will be increased, as the curvature of the link devices which make up the separate pairs of links in the toggle lever construction is increased, but it must be understood, of course, that this increased curvature of the link devices cannot be carried beyond a certain definite point.
In Fig. 4, I have shown a modified form of hinge in which I substitute for the-straight flanges or connecting plates (Z of the hinge butts d, curved flanges or connecting plates (i which may be formed in, or secured in. the butts d in any desired manner, and in which the slots (Z are formed, and with this construction, the end of the links of the side pairs of the toggle lever construction are not flattened, as shown in Figs. 1 to 3 but said links maintain their curvature to the outer ends thereof, and the curvature of the flanges or plates 03 corresponds with that of the link members, and in this form of construction, a washer f is employed between the end of one of the side link members and the corresponding flange or plate d of one of the butts (Z, and a similar washer f between the diagonally opposite end of the corresponding other side link member, and the flange or plate d of the other butt, this construction being necessary in order that the parts of the hinge may fold completely together when the door, gate, sash, or other article is in a closed position.
My improved hinge may be used whenever it is necessary to connect a swinging device or article with a stationary support, and is particulaniy adapted for use in all cases where the swinging device is not of great weight, and it will be understood that any desired number of my improved hinges may be used in connection with a single swinging device and stationary support, and it will be also understood that my improved hinge or hinges may be made of any desired strength, the strength depending on the weight and size of the hinge or hinges, and the material employed.
From the foregoing descriptionit will be seen that with the construction shown and described, the movable parts of the hinge or toggle lever construction are entirely folded within the butts d when the door, gate, sash or other article to which thehinge or hinges are applied is in the closed position, and my invention is not limited to any particular construction of the butts d, or method of making the same, all that is ;-necessary in.
this connection being that said butts be so formed that when the separate parts of the hinge are folded together the toggle lever construction employed will be entirelyv inclosed in the space within the butts and, if desired, the body portions of said butts may be made box-shaped in form in cross section, or the sides thereof may be closed in, and other changes in and modifications of the construction described may be made, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages, and although I have shown and described my improvement as applicable to hinges only, my invention is not limited to this use, and the same may be applied or used in the construction of gates, in which form. the part a would represent a gate post and the part 7) with the toggle lever construction 0 the gate and the gate wouldopen and close in the same manner as the hinge, the movement of said gate in opening and closing being in a curved line, or in the arc of a circle, and my invention may also be applied to other uses and for other purposes. It will also be seen that the toggle lever construction which connects the separate butt members of my improved hinge is arc-shaped, both in horizontal. and vertical section when expanded and also when collapsed, and, in the operation of expanding and collapsing the said toggle lever construction, the separate pairs of link members that make up said toggle lever construction all move in a curved or arc-shaped plane, this movement resulting from the fact that the separate pairs of link members are connected end to end in the manner of other devices of this class.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. A hinge comprising two butt members adapted to be countersunk in a stationary support and a swinging device, said butt members being connected by a toggle lever construction consisting of a plurality of pairs of links formed on the arc of a circle, one end of one link of the side pairs of the toggle lever construction having a pivotal connection with the butts, and the corre sponding ends of the other links of the side pairs of links of the toggle lever construction having a sliding mnncction with the but-ts. I
A hinge comprising two butt members adapted to be countersunk in a stationary support and a swinging device, said butt members being connected by an arc-shaped toggle lever construction composed of separate pairs of links formed on the arc of a circle.
3. In an apparatus of the class described,
a stationary member and a swinging member connected by a toggle lever construction composed of separate pairs of links formed on the arc of a circle and adapted to be expanded and folded in an arcuate path.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of the subscribing witnesses this 22nd day of August 1913.
