Description

No. 825,943. PATBNTED JULY 17, 41906.
J. SOSS. lIBT'ISIBIJF.. HINGE.
APPLIOATION FILED APR.13,1905.
WITNESSES (L) JOSEPH SOSS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
INVISIBLE i'ilNGE.
To al? whomy it may conc-67%:
Beit known that I, JOSEPH Soss, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, 1
in the county of N ew York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Invisible Hinges, oi which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it ap- I pertains to make and usethe same.
This invention relates to what are known as invisible hinges, which cannot be seen when the door or other article to which they are applied is closed; and the object thereot` is to provide an improved device of this class which maybe applied to an ordinary door, a gate, a sash, the cover of a piano, the cover of a box or case, or to any other article to which such devices can be applied, a further object being to provide an invisible hinge which is simple in construction and operation and which is easily applied, and which is strong and durable and will not easily get out of order or need repair, and which maybe made of any desired strength or capacity.'
In addition to providing a hinge which may be applied to doors and other articles as above described, in which application one part of the hinge is secured to a stationary and theother to a swinging member, my improved hinge may be applied to two swinging parts'or members, one of which is hinged to a. stationary support or frame; but in the following description I will describe my improvement as applied to a `loor and doorframe, part oi each of which is shown in the drawings, and in this application of my improved hinge or hinges the separate parts of said hinge or hinges are secured in what are called the adjacent surfaces of the frame and door when the latter is in a closed position.
` The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawingsform a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each olE the views, and in which- Figure l is a front view showing a part of a door-trame and door connected by one of my improved hinges, the door beingl in an open osition; Fig. 2, a horizontal section on t-he ine 2 2 of Fig. 1; Fig, 3, a section the same as Fig. 2, but showing the door in a closed position; Fig. 4, a section on the line Ll eto'f Fig. l and showing the door in a closed position; Fig, 5, a section on the line 5 5 of Fig. l; Fig.
Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed April 13, 1905. Serial No. 255,335.'
Patented July 17, 1906.
6, a view oi' the hinge detached and looking in the direction ot' the arrow 1r ol' Fig. 4; and Fig. 7, a view of the hinge detached and looking in the direction of the arrow 'y of Fig. 4, part of the' construction in Fig. 7 being also broken away.
In the drawings termin g part of this speciiication. I have shown at d what may-be called l a part of the door-frame and at Z) a. part of a door.; but it will be understood that' the part a. may represent any stationary member and the part b any swinging member, -and in some cases both of said parts may be swinging members', and in the practice of my invention I provide a hinge comprising two separate similar parts, each ot' which in the form of construction shown consists ofa yokeshaped frame member or support c2, having a face-plate c3. The yoke-shaped frame members or supports c2 and the face-plates c3 are adapted to be countersunk in corresponding chambers or mortises in the stationary and swinging membersaandb. The yoke-shap d frame members or supports c2 are open at thcir faces, and pivoted within said members, as at d, are curved plates or' rmemberse.4 These curved plates or members e are free to turn in and slide in the separate parts of the hinge which are countersunk in the stationary and swinging members ft and as hereinbefore described, and the movement of the plates or members c in the separate parts of the hinge are guided or controlled and limited by curved slots or grooves c6 in the top and bot tom of the parts c2 of the hinge, and by pins e, secured in the ends ol' the curved plates or members e and movable in the "slots or grooves c, or this construction may be reversed .and the curved plates or members e may be provided with slots or grooves, and
` the top or bottom of the part c2 of the hinge, or both the to n and bottom of said parts, may be provided with pins movable in said curved slots or grooves.
In the form of construction shownthe bottom portion of the pivote/d side of one of the curved plates or memberse is cut away at its pivoted edge, as shown at e3 in Fig. 1, and the top portion of the other curved plate o'r member e is cut away at its pivoted edge, as shown at e. in Fig. l, and this forms projecting parts or hinged portions e5 on each of said members or plates which cross each other, as clearly shown m the drawings, and allow said plates or members e to move 'freely one jipon ari-.-
other and to swing freely -in ijiorizontal' plane. My invention, however, is not limited to the exact forni and number of the swinging, curved' plates v`or members e employed, and various changes in and modiiications ,ofthese features of my improved hinge may be made without departing fromfthe spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advanta es. Wit a hinge made in this manner it is possible for the swingin member to turnthroiigh an arc of one hun red 'andv eighty degrees,
and 'it will be 'observed thatl independent of improved inge consists only of four partsin` the'form of construction shown, said parts comprising two Jframes, casings, 'or holders l v adapted to be secured in astationary anda vhinge may be ma swinging member and curved plates or rnem-- 'bers pivoted in reach of said frames, casings,
or supports and adapted to swing in the other frame', casing, or support.
It will also be ap arent that my improved de of any desired size or stren th and maybe applied, as `hereinbeiore state wherever devices of this class are'required.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
' 1. A hinge composed of two similar holders having parallel to s and bottoms, and curved swin ing mem ers pivoted between the-to s an bottomsadjacent to the ends Y there@ and. adjacent to the corresponding side edges thereof when the holders are placed `fa'ce to face, the curved swinging member pivoted'ineach holder bein face to face, the curvedswinging member ivoted in each holder bein adapted to turn eely within the other, an means for guiding the movements of said curved swingingA members in said holders, and for limiting the., same, substantially as shown and'described. 3. A hinge comprising two yoke-shaped casings having parallel tops and bottoms prov vided at their ends with oppositely-directed i' face-plates between which are openings similarin form and dimensions to the saidv holders 1n cross-section, and curved swinging spending sides of the members pivoted within said openings adj acent to said face-plates andv at thev correholders'when the latter are placed face to face, the said curved swingswingingmember whic is pivotedin v.one
holder being free to swing and turn inthe other holder, and means forguiding the moveving members being crossed and the curvedv ment of said curved swingin "members,in.
said holders, substantially as s own and described. f s 4, A'hinge comprising two similar holders having parallel tops and bottoms the ends of which areprovided with oppositely-directed face-plates between which are openings .the A' dimensions of which aresi'milar to the dimensions of the holders 1n cross-section, .and
curved swinging members ivoted within said openings adjacent to the acelates vand adjacent to the corresponding si es of the hold- A ers when the ,latter are placed face to face, the said curved Aswinging members being crossed, andthe curved swinging member pivoted in one holder being free to turn and swing in the other holden; and means for A guiding the movements of said curved swinging members in said holders and for'limiting the same, -siibstantially 'as shown and de-- Y scribed 5.` Aliinge, com rising Vtwo holders having parallel tops and ottoms provided at their -ends with oppositely-directed face-plates between which are openings, the dimensions of. y
which are similar to the dimensions of the interior of (the holders in cross-section', and curved swinging members pivoted within'sai'd openings adjacent to the face-plates and at the corresponding sides of the 'holderswhen the latter are placed face to face, thecurved swinging members being crossed, and the curved swin ing member which is pivoted in one holder being free to turn in the other holder, and' means for guiding the movements of said curved swingin members in `said holders and for limitingV t e same con- .sisting of `slots or grooves formed in the holders and pins connected with the curved swinging members and movable in said' slots or grooves, substantially as shownand described.-
In testimony that I claim the foregoinglas my invention I have signed my name, in
presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 12th day of April,;l905. Y, Y
