Description
' (No M01161.) 4 I f A. G. JOHNSON. SASH BALANGING DEVICE. No; 357,204. Patented Feb. 8 1887.
SNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
ANDREW e. JOHNSON, or RooKFoRniL INoIs.
. SASH-BALANCING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 357,204, dated February 8, 1887. Application filed January 25, 1886. Senial No. 189,561. (No model.)
.To all whom it nmy concern:
Be itknownthat I, ANDREW G. JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, residing'at Rockford, in the county of Winnebago and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Balancing Devices for Book-0ases and Windows, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide fronts for book-cases, cabinets, &c., that can be more easily, expeditiously, and safely opened and closed than the outward-swinging or laterally-sliding doors now in use.
This invention consists in constructing bookcase fronts preferably in four parts, having upward-anddownward motion, and being suspended by means of cords and pulleys.
This invention further consists in so connecting the above-mentioned parts by means of cords that they serve to balance each other in every position which they can be made to assume.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, Figure l represents an isometrical view, of a book-case e111- bodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a front View, in detail, of a portion of Fig. 1.
Like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two views.
A, A, A, and A represent, respectively, the bottom, front casings, sides, and top of a book-case.
' B represents sash-grooves, formed in any desired manner.
O O and D D represent, respectively, alternate pairs of glazed sashes, which together form the movable front.
0", C D and D represent knobs for operating the above-mentioned sashes.
E E E E F F F F represent, respectively, pairs of pulleys provided with bearings E*, E F and F which are supported by the uprights G, G, and G portion of the book case H represents a cord connecting the left side of sash O with the same side of sash C.
H represents a cord connecting the right side of sash O with the same side of C.
H represents a cord connecting the right side ofsash D with the same side of sash D.
H represents a cord connecting the left side of sash D with the same side ofsash D.
To open the portions of the case opposite sashes G G, lay hold of knob G and draw sash O downward until the latter covers sash D, during which operation sash G will move upward until it is covered by sash D. To close sashes O G, lay hold of knob O and draw sash O downward until it rests upon the bottom A of the case.
Sashes G and O serve as weights for balancing each other at any desired point along their upward or downward courses.
It is to be observed that sashes O and O are both opened and closed by drawing the proper sash downward, and that it is never necessary, either in opening or closing the case, to push a sash upward.
Sashes D and D are operated in precisely the same manner as that already indicated for operating sashes O and G.
I claim- In sash-balancing devices, thev combination, with an upper window-sash, glazed or unglazed, of a lower sash, glazed or unglazcd, of 7 an adjacent window, and a suitable cord or, cable connecting said sashes for the purpose ofbalancing the upper sash of one window by means of the lower sash of another window,
and vice versa, substantially as described, and 80 for the purpose specified.
A. G. JOHNSON.
