SLIDING WINDOW-BLIND.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 364,955, dated June 14, 1887.

To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE PorrER'r, of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee, and in the State of Visconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sliding Vindow-Blinds; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.

My invention relates to sliding windowblinds; and it consists iu certain peculiarities of construction, as will be fully set forth hereinafter.

In the drawings, Figure l isa vertical crosssection of my present device. Fig. 2isahorizontal section on the line z z or Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a section on thelineof Fig. 4, and Fig. 4. is a section on the line y y of Fig. 3. Figs. 5 and 6 are details of other forms of my invention.

A represents one of the jambs or side pieces of the wiudowcasing, and A A' the window sashes.

B B B2 are the sliding window-blinds, three such being shown in the present case, but the number being immaterial.

C are the guide-strips,having beads c c c on vthe outer surface corresponding in number to the number of blinds in any given case, and the edges of the stiles of the sliding blinds are :furrowed out to form coves b, corresponding in shape to the said beads,upon which they slide. The strips C have partitions c formed therewith on the side opposite to the beads, and extending backward against the jambs A to form spaces c to receive the weights D, which are attached by cords, chains, or cables d to the sliding blinds. rIhe said cords pass over pulleys E, secured to the upper part of the guide-strips O, and are secured to the upper portions of the blinds,which arc hollowed out, as shown at b in Fig. 3, for this purpose.

The weights D and the blinds B B', 85e., just counterbalance each other, and hence the blinds will remain in any desired position to which they may be moved. It will be understood that the guidestrips and weights, &c., are designed to be employed at each side of the window-casing. The guide-strips are independent from the jambs, and are attached thereto in any suitable manner, as by screws a', as shown in Fig. 2.

The pulleys E are all preferably mounted on a plate or plates, e, secured to the upper part of the guide-strips C, which are cut out for their reception, as shown.

Under some circumstances it-may be desirable (as when the window is narrow) to utilize the jambs A for the formation of the compartments a. This may be done in a variety of ways, two of which I have shown in Figs. 5 and 6. In Fig. 5 the janib A is cut out to first form one wide groove, and the end or outside partitions, c', of the guide-strips C are dispensed with and the strips C then applied, as shown, thereby forming the desired compartments or spaces et for the weights D.

In Fig. 6 the jamb is shown with a series of grooves, and the partitions c form part of the jambs A instead of part of the strips C, and in this form the strips G are smooth upon one surface, though in both instances just described they have t-he beads c c c upon their other surfaces.

My devices may be variously modified in other ways without departing from the spirit of my invention, so long as a consecutive series of compartments, a a, are provided for the weights D between the jainbs and guidestrips.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The combination of the casing of a window with the guide-strip O, having partitions c', forming compartments a between them on one side and beads c on the other side, said beads being cutaway at the top. pulleys E,secured to the strips at said upper eut-away portions, sliding blinds B B', &e., having grooves b formed in the edges of their stiles and cut away or hollowed out, as at b, in their upper edges, and the weights D, and cords, chains, or cables d, secured to said weights and to said blinds at the point b and passing over the pulleys E, substantially as set forth.

In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand, at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Visconsin, in the presence of two witnesses.
