W. D. G00 DND W Sash Balances.

n l w lvrrnnN STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM D. GOODNOW, OF RUTLAND, VERMONT.
lmPRovEMEN-r IN sAsH-BALANCES.
Specification forming' part of Letters Patent No. 150,235, dated April 28, 1874; application filed .March 5, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM D. GooDNoW, of Rutland, in the county of' Rutland and State of Vermont, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Window Sash Fixtures, of which the following is a specication:
Figure l represents my improved fixtures as applied to a window, parts being broken away to show the construction. Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view of the same, taken through the line al, Fig. l.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The invention consists in a case let into the top bar of lower sash, flush with its surface, and provided with a pivoted bar, inclined block, and knob, whereby the cord that enters the weight-grooves may be cramped, so as to connect and balance sashes, as hereinafter de scribed.
A represents the frame or casing of the window. B represents the upper sash, and O the lower sash. To the upper part of the sides of the frame or casing A are secured pulleys D, over which pass the cords E. One end of the A cords E is secured to the upper corners of the upper sash B. The other ends of the cords E enter grooves in the edges of the side bars of the lower sash C, and are secured to weights F, placed in said grooves, and which move up and down in them freely. To the top bar of the lower sash O, near one or both its ends, is attached a case, G, which should be let into said bar, so as to be flush with its surface. Vithin the case G is pivoted a bar or plate, H, through the outer end of which, and through the case G, the cord E passes to enter the weight-grooves in said sash, so that by turning the bar H upon its pivot the cord E may be cramped so as to connect it and its weight rigidly to the lower sash, thus connecting the sashes, and causing them to balance each other and move together. The bar H is operated by an inclined block, I, placed within the case G, and moved by a knob, J, the Stem of which passes through a slot in the case G. To a side bar of the lowcr sash O is secured a case, K, within which is placed a bar, L, having an arm formed upon it, which passes out through a groove in the sash O, to enter a hole in the frame A, and thus fasten the sash in place. M is a slide placed within the case K, and which is operated by a knob, N, the stem of which passes through a slot in the oase K. The slide M is so made, as shown in Fig. 1, that when moved in one direction it may withdraw the arm of the bar L from the frame A, and allow the sash O to be moved up and down freely.
As the slide L is moved in the other direction the bar L is released, and is forced outward to bear against the frame A by the spring O, ready to enter onev of the holes in said frame to fasten thesash.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The case G, pivoted bar H, and slide I J, constructed, arranged, and operating, in connection with the cord E, weight F, and sashes B C, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
WILLIAM D. GOODNOW.
Vitnesses J. W. P. HOVEY, A. D. BINGHAM.
