SASH BALANCE.
Patented Jan. 12, 1886.
I 1. Can. wvvu? N. PUERS, PhobLilhugmplwr. Washington. a. a
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICEO HENRY R. BRIDGES, OF GREENOASTLE, INDIANA.
SASH-BALANCE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters PatentNo. 333,992, dated January 12, 1886. Application filed October 29, 1885. Serial No. 181,329. (No model.)
T0 to whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY R. BRIDGES, a resident of Greencastle, Putnam county, Indiana, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Balances, a description of which is set forth in the following specification, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in the several figures of which like letters indicate like parts.
My invention is designed to provide a simple and cheap way of attaching weights and cords to window-sashes, and to dispense with the use of box-frames altogether, and will be understood from the following description.
In the drawings, fis the window-frame, set in against the studding, two of these being preferably used, placed side by side, as shown.
8 is the sash; s, the stop; sl, aninclined slot or opening bored or cut through the studding to admit the passage of the rope 1", to which the weight w is hung.
A sheave-pulley, p, is let into the frame in the usual manner, and a second and similarpulley, p, is either let into or secured to the side of the outermost studding, the cord, which is attached to the sash in the usual manner, passing over the inner pulley, down through the opening made through the studding, over the outside pulley, and down to the weight, as shown. The inclined slot and additional pulley give plenty of leverage and insure freedom of movement, and the weight hangs down freely alongside the studding, and no boxes are necessary in the window-frames.
Similar arrangements of pulleys and cord 5 are made for each sash. The weight may be hung before the Weather-board is put on; or short sections of the weather-board may be out out at the proper places and fastened on by screws, so as to allow removal for hanging the weights or repairing breakage.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is the following:
1. The framef, studding st, pulleys pp, and rope 1', connected to sash and passing over 4.5 pulleys p p and through slot 81 in studding, all combined and arranged to operatesubstautially as described.
2. A sash-balance wherein the sash is supported by a weighted rope passing over one or more pulleys and through an inclined opening in the studding adjacent to the windowframe.
3. A sash-balance composed of a weighted cord connected with the sash and passing over a sheave-pulley let into the window-frame, thence downward through an inclined opening or slot in one or more adjacent studding, and thence over an additional pulley and downward to the attached weight, all coin- 6o bined substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereto set my hand this 17th day of October, 1885.
HENRY BRIDGES.
Witnesses:
