Description

ntrd ,gta/na PETER CHRISTIANSEN, OF'ROCI-IES'IER, MINNESOTA.
Lette/rs Patent No. 91,088, 'dated .Tune 8, 1869.
IMPROVED SASH-BALANCE.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
in the Mode of Hanging Window-Sashes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the saine, reference heilig had to the accompanying drawings, lnaking a part of this v specication,in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation.
Figure is a vertical central section on line a; a', fig. 1.
Figure 3 is afront view of the pulley, detached from the window-frame.
rlhe saine letters of reference, where employed in the drawings, de'note identical parts.
The nature of myA invention consists in the construction of a pulley secured to the upper part of a window-frame.
The sheave of the pulley is provided with projections at its periphery, fitting into the links of a chain, which connects the upper and lower sashes.
A lever is pivoted to the pulley, and so constructed that it may serve to prevent the pulley from rotating, and thereby keep the sashcs (suspended by the chain passing round the sheave) in any desired position` To enable others skilled in the art to make anduse my invention, I will proceed to describe its operation and construction.
A is a window-frame, and
B and C are the 'upper and lower sashes.
B and C are hooks or eyes, to which a chain, D, is fastened.
VThe chain passes over the sheave E, said sheave heilig attached to a frame or block, F, iirrnly secured to the upper part of frame A at A.
rlhe sheave E is provided with projections E at its periphery, fitting into the'links of the chain l).
`A pin, F', projects horizontally from one ofthe sides of the block l", and a lever, G, is pivoted to thisA projeotion.
A spring, H, is fastened to the lower endof the lever G, bearing on the block or fastening, Vand 'keeping the upper end of the lever G pressed against the pulley.
The lever is shaped somewhat like an S. Its upper part is prolonged, and extends horizontally'through an aperture ont for that purpose in the block, and enters into a recess in the sheave E at E.
'lo the lower end of the lever G is attached a cord or chain, I, extending far enough downward to be reached with ease from within.
Vhen the operator pulls the cord or chain I,'the lever will assume a position, as shown in red lines in fig. 3.
The upper part of the lever G will be drawn out of the recess in the sheave, and consequently allow the sheave to revolve.
By this operation, I may place the upper and lower sashes in any desired position, and independently of each other.
On the window-sill, I pivot a catch or lock, K, which,
when turned into a position at right angles with the sash, enters a groove, K', cut for that purpose in the lower sash. In such position it locks the lower sash to the sill, and cannot be withdrawn but from within..
Having thus described my invention,
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Pat- Witnesses:
T. SnnMANNs, vA. B. AMUNDSEN.
