JOHN WILLIAMS, OF NEWBURYPORT, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-THIRD TO WARREN CAREY AND ONE-THIRD TO HALE KNIGHT, BOTH OF NEWBURYPORT,
MASSACHUSETTS.
AUTOMOBILE-HINGE.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN \Vnmm'us, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newburyport, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automobile-I-Iinges, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in hinges, and while the invention is primarily intended for use in connection with the doors of motor vehicle bodies, it can be used in other arts with equal success.
In motor vehicle bodies now in general use, the lower port-ions of the doors are curved to correspond to the shape of the door jamb, and the principal object of this invention is therefore to provide a hinge which is capable of being readily attached to the curved portion of such a door and its jamb, whereby the hinge will be concealed when the door is closed and will be capable of the necessary spreading or expansion when the door is opened, the expansion of the hinge accommodating itself to the curve of the door.
Another object of the invention is to provide a hinge for the purpose set forth which is composed of a relatively few number of parts, is therefore simple in construction and cheap to manufacture, and is capable of being nested when the door is in its closed position.
WVith these and many other objects in view which will be more readily apparent as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will hereinafter be more fully described, illustrated and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a detail side elevation of a motor vehicle body and door showing the application of my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view through the body showing the door in its open position. Fig. 3 is a top view of the hinge closed. Fig. l is a cross sectional view of the hinge with the parts thereof arranged as shown in Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a top view showing hinge extended. Fig. 6 is a vertical sectional view on the line 55 of Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed July 9, 1913.
Patented May 12, 1914:.
Serial No. 778,200.
Fig. 5. Fig. 7 is a side elevation showing the hinge in its closed relation.
Similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several figures of the drawings.
In the drawings there is shown one embodiment of the invention, which includes a main hinge A and a supplemental leaf B which is connected to said hinge for swinging movements on an axis at an angle to the axis of said hinge. The main hinge A comprises an attaching leaf 5 and a swing ing leaf (3, these leaves being connected for the usual relative swinging movements by the usual pivot pin or pintle 7. The supplcmental leaf B is arranged in opposed relation to the leaf 6, and the opposite faces of said leaves B and 6 are respectively formed with grooves 8 which are disposed parallel to the pivot pin 7.
In order to connect the supplemental leaf B with the leaf 6 so that the former may.
move about an axis at any angle to the pin 7, there is provided an extensible hinge C. This hinge consists of a pair of leaves 9-9 which are pivotally connected by a pin 10, and the outer ends of these leaves 9 are respectively pivoted to the leaf 6 and to the supplemental leaf B by pivot pins 1111, said. pins being preferably disposed at or near the center of the last mentioned leaves and arranged in a plane at right angles to the pivot pin 7. The combined depth of the grooves 8 is slightly greater than the combined width of the two leaves 9, in order to receive and house said leaves 9 when the hinge is closed, as shown in Figs. 4 and 7.
In practice, the attaching plate of the main hinge A is attached to the curved por tion of the door jamb 12 which is formed in the vehicle body 13, and the supplemental leaf B is attached to the curving portion of the door 14:. the latter of course being shaped to fit the door jamb. In order to conceal this hinge, the attaching portions thereof are countersunk. l/Vhen the door is opened, the
swinging leaf (3 will, of course, swing upon the pivot pin 7, and the curved portion of the door 141 will swing laterally, thereby causing the supplemental. loaf B to be disposed at an angle and in spaced relation to the leaf 6. By this construction, it will be observed that this hinge may accommodate itself to various curves of the door or body, inasmuch the extensible hinge C will adapt itself to the interval between the jamb and the door when the latter is open, as shown in Fig. 2.
I claim:
1. A hinge of the class described comprising a main hinge having a swinging leaf, a supplemental leaf disposed in opposed relation to said swinging leaf, and a supplemental hinge operating between said swinging and supplemental leaves, one leaf of the supplemental hinge having a pivotal connection with said swinging leaf centrally between the side edges thereof, and the other leaf of the supplemental hinge having a pivotal connection with the supplemental leaf centrally between the side edges thereof, the said pivotal connections for and the knuckle of the supplemental hinge being arranged at right angles to the knuckle or pivot of the main hinge, and said supplemental hinge being adapted, when folded, to be concealed and housed between said swinging and supplemental leaf.
2. The combination with a main hinge including a swinging leaf, of a supplemental leaf disposed in opposed relation to .said swinging leaf, and an extensible hinge connecting said swinging and supplemental leaves and foldable in a plane at right angles to the axis of the main hinge, the inner faces of the supplemental and swinging leaves being conjointly formed with a groove for housing the extensible hinge when the supplemental leaf is disposed against the swinging leaf.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
