Description

I. P. STRAND.
COMBINATION COAT AND TROUSERS HANGER.
APPLICATION FILED DEC-11.1917- 1,278,054. Patented Sept. 3,1918.
6 jnverzior:
To all whom it mag/concern ED STATES sonar P. STRAND, or s'rr rA L', Minir'iasorii; V
Specification of vBe it known that I, JOHN P. STRAND, a
citizen of the United States, residing at St.
Paul, in the county of Ramsey and State of Minnesota, have invented'a new and useful Improvement inf'Comblnatlon Coat and Trousers Hangers, of which the following is a specification. I r
This invention-relates to improvement in combination coat and trousers hangers, the primary-obj ect being to provide a simple'and inexpensive construction which can be closed into compact form and easily unfolded for use.
A further object is to produce a simple,
strong and serviceable device which when folded will remain in that position and whe'n extended will be locked open to prevent unintentional folding. I A still further object is to provide a device of the kind stated having a head stock which provides broad display surfaces for advertisements. I
In the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a sideelevation, part of the structure being in section and all of the parts shown'in extended position; Fig. 2 is another side elevation when all of the parts are folded, portions of the structure being broken away and in section; Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a detail looking at the opposite side from that shown in Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a top end View, and Fig. 5 is an enlarged edge view of a detail. I
In the drawing, let A and B indicate a pair of coat arms having two of their ends overlapping and hinged together by a pintle 2, the overlapping portions being mortised so that the joint is of even thickness with that of the arms A and B. To the outer extremities of said arms are hingedly secured by pivots 3 the outer ends of a pair of trouser arms C and D, said trousers arms being hinged together at their contiguous ends by the hinge 4 so that the arms will swing inwardly between the arms A and B when the latter are closed and so that the ends 5 of arms C and D will abut when in horizontal position and assist in maintaining said arms in said last mentioned position. The outer ends of the arms A and B are formed with inner shoulders 6 against which the outer extremities of the arms C and D press to also assist in supporting the arms C and D horizontally but al- COMBINATION COAT Ann TROUSERS HANGER).

lowing'them to be turned inwardly. When the device is closed the arms Gland D .nest in longitudinal grooves 7 in the lower surfaces of the arms A and B as illustrated in Fig. 2. I
Arranged between the adjacent sides of the joint between the ends of the arms A and B which are hinged together is the shank 8 of a supporting hook 9, said shank being secured by bending around the pintle 2 so that the hook can be moved into upstanding position as shown in Fig. 1 or in folded position as-illustrated in Fig. 2. Aflat' spring plate 10 secured by the fastener 11 on the inner face 12 of one of the sides of the joint between the adjacent ends of armsA and B' turned position will press against the spring 10 and be releasablyengaged at either of its ends, both of said ends being bowed out to.
more positively engage the shank. In this manner the spring tends to hold the holder either in upright or turned down position.
lVhen-in upright position the shank 8, also enters a slot 13 in the side 14 of the joint member of. arm- B, so as toreleasably lock 'the arms in open position. Spring washers l5 placed over the pintle 2 allow the members of the joint to spring into and out of engagement with the shank 8 to releasably hold the arms A and B open. This resilient connection between the arms A and B also tends to hold the arms either open or closed. A small spring wear clip 16 is placed across the radiating groove or recess 13 to reduce wear and more positively engage the shank 8.
In use the device is opened into the position shown in Fig. 1, wherein the trousers arms extend straight across the space between the outer ends of the coat arms in which position the hook and arms are interlocked automatically. To close the device, the arms C and D are turned inwardly and rest in the arms A and B and the hook turned down into the position shown in Fig. 2 in which position the hook and arms interlock and are maintained in closed position.
In accordance with the patent statutes, I
shown is only illustrative, and that the invention can be carried out by other means and applied to uses other than those above set forth within the scope of the following claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is i 1. A coat hanger, and trousers support, comprising, in combination, a pair of coat arms having adjacent ends overlapping and hinged together on a pintle under spring pressure, a pair of trousers arms hinged by a pair of their ends together and by their remaining outer ends to the outer extremities of said coat arms, to fold upwardly between said coat arms, said coat arms being termed with longitudinal channels in their lower surfaces in which said trousers arms are secreted when the coat and trousers arms are :lolded together, said trousers arms having extensions beyond their hinge connections with the outer ends of said coat arms and pressing against said coat arms to sup port said trousers arms in horizontal position when the hanger is open, a support having a shank between the "faces of said overlapping ends and movably secured to said pintle to swing into upright or downturned position, and resilient means on one of said overlapping ends for releasably engaging said support when the latter is in upstanding or turned down position, one ol said overlapping ends having a shoulder to engage and assist in holding said support in upstanding position.
2. A coat hanger and trousers support, comprisin in combination, a pair of coat arms having adjacent ends overlapping and hinged together on a pintle under spring pressure, a pair of trousers arms hinged by a pair of their ends together and by their remaining outer ends to the outer extremities of said coat arms to :liold upwardly between said coat arms. said coat arms being formed with longitudinal channels in their lower surfaces in which said trousers arms are secreted when the coat and trousers arms are folded together, said trousers arms having extensions beyond their hinge connections with the outer ends of said coat arms and pressing against said coat arms to support said trousers arms in horizontal position when the hanger is open, a support having ashanlt between the faces of said overlapping ends and. movably secured to said pintle to swing into upright or downturned position, and resilient means on one of said overlapping ends for releasably engaging said support when the latter is in upstanding or tin'ned down position, one of said overlapping ends having a groove to receive and assist in holding said support in upstanding position.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
JOHN P. STRAND.
