J. P. STRAND. COAT AND TROUSERS HANGER. APPLICATION FILED APR. 14,1919.

UNITED STATES JOHN P. STRAND, OF ST. PAUL, MINNESOTA.
COAT AND TROUSERS HANGER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 8, 1921.
Application filed April 14. 1919. Serial No. 289.926.
1/ 0 all to 710m it may concern:
Be it known that E, JOHN P. STRAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Paul, in the county of Ramsey and btate of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Coat and Trousers Hangers, of w rich the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in coat and trouser hangers, the primary object being to provide simple and inexpensive means which can be stamped and pressed from thin sheets of metal or other suitable material. A further object is to so construct the parts that a strong and rigid structure is produced by a minimum amount of material. With these and other objects in view my invention-comprises the for hanging a coat and trousers thereon;
Fig. 2 is side elevation of my invention when the parts are folded; 3 is a sec tion of a detail taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1; Fig. e is another section of a detail taken on the line H- of Fig. 1; Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a detail showing a portion of the trousers supporting arm; Fig. 6 is a longitudinal section of a detail showing the method of securing one of the hinge members of the trouser arm to the coat hanger, and Fig. 7 is a perspective view of a detail showing a portion of the coat hanger member and the method of hinging its parts together.
My invention in a general way incorporates in its construction a pair of coat hanger members A and B, suitably pivoted together at C and a pair of trouser arm members D and E, suitably pivoted together at F and hinged to the coat hanger members at Gr and H. The coat arms resemble in shape on their upper surfaces the shape of the human shoulders. This structure is provided with a hook support I, the shank 10 of which is bent substantially at right angles into a shaft member 11, upon which the coat hanger members A and B are hinged at C. said shaft acting as a pivot and being suitably fastened to the coat hanger memhere to prevent removal but at the same time permit a free hinge action by the coat hanger members. The coat hanger members and trouser arm members D and E are channel shaped in cross section and are made out of thin sheet metal pressed into shape, to form the parts. The coat hanger members spread outwardly apart when in unfolded condition and incline downwardly, their apex portion being formed with overlapping edges 12, which produce a close and rigid joint when the parts are folded. These overlapping members receive the shaft 11 which is provided with suitable disks 13 and has its end riveted at 14: to secure the parts together and permit free hinge action. When the parts are folded into the position shown in Fig. 2 the hook I is turned down into the dotted line position to produce compact form. The outer free ends of the coat hanger arms are curved inwardly to form a suitable housing, the sides of said housing being provided with downward extensions forming ournal bearing flanges 13 and 14' (see Figs. 1 and 6), in which pivots 15 are secured to assist in forming the hinge connections G with the trouser arms D and E. The trouser arms being channel shaped in cross section have two of their ends overlapping and secured together by a pivot 16 passing through the overlapping sides of said members. This pivot 15 connection permits the trouser arms to swing upwardly into the position illustrated in Fig. 2. The remaining outer ends of the trouser arms are secured to the coat arms by the hinge connections G and H, the portions of said trouser arms extending outwardly from the pivots 16 being adapted to strike against the inner faces 17 of the coat arms to support the trouser arms in horizontal outstretched condition. The arrangement of the parts is such that when the trouser arms and coat arms are folded wardly the trouser arms nest within the coat arms to produce compactness. The entire device is simple and inexpensive in construction and permits of stamping and forming out of thin metal or other suitable material at aminimum cost and at the same time produce maximum strength of construction with a minimum amount of material.
The outer ends of arms A and B are slotted at 18 and 19 to permit inserting a shirt band in position to be clamped against surfaces 17 by the ends of arms D and E for the purpose of hanging a skirt by the device.
In accordance with the patent statutes I have described the principles of operation of my invention, together with the apparatus which I now consider to reperesent the best embodiment thereof, but I desire to have it known that the construction shown is only illustrative and that the invention can be carried out by other means and applied to uses other than those above set forth within the scope of the following claim. v
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is A coat and trouser hanger, comprising, in combination, a pair of downwardly slanting spreading arms made out of pressed thin material channel shaped in cross section and having the hollow sides thereof fac ing downwardly and the apex of said arms overlapping, a pintle upon which the arms are hinged and a pair of trouser arms hinged lengthwise together and having their outer ends hinged to and within the outer extremities of said coat arms, said trouser arms also having their end portions with in said coat arms arranged to swing upwardly against the inner surfaces of the coat arms to assist in supporting the trouser arms in horizontal position, said trouser arms also being adapted to turn upwardly between their extremities and to nest in said coat arms and said coat arms having slots in the sides of their outer ends through which a skirt may be inserted to be clamped and hung by the ends of said trouser arms against the inner surfaces of the coat arms when the parts are unfolded.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification.
JOHN P. STRAND.
