FRANK H. WIZOREK, OF IONIA, MICHIGAN.
HINGE.
Application filed February 7, 1916.
T 0 all whom t may concern Be it known that I, FRANK H. ldizonnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ionia, in the county of Ionia and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hinges, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to hinges for automobile and other doors, and it has particular reference to ahinge having a locking device associated therewith so that the lock usually required for securing the door in closed position may be dispensed with.
The invention has for its object to produce a combined hinge and lock of simple and improved construction.
A further object of the invention is to produce a hinge having a locking device associated therewith, together with lock actuating means especially adapted to be applied to the door of an automobile or other vehicle.
lVith these and other ends in view which will readily appear as the nature of the invention isbetter understood, the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of the invention, it being, however', understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein eX- hibited, but that changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of the claims may be resorted to when desired.
In. the drawing,-Figure 1 is a pcrspective view of a hinge constructed in accordance with the invention, the leaves of the hinge being shown in open relation and the operating rod having been broken away. Fig. 2 is a view showing the hinge applied to an automobile door and body, a portion of the latter being shown open. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view taken through the hinge, the door and a portion of the body. Fig. 4 is a. sectional detail view taken on the line 1 4 in Fig. 3, and showing the parts in locking engagement. Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 4l, but showing the parts unlocked.
Corresponding parts in the several ligures are` denoted by like characters of reference.
ihe improved hinge is composed of the main leaves A, B, the same being connected Specification of Letters Patent.

together by interengaging knuckles 15 and pintles 1G. rlhe single pintle may be used if preferred. The leaves are provided with apertures 17 for the passage of fastening members, such as screws 18, whereby they are connected with the body post 19 and the door 20, respectively.
One of the leaves A has a slot 21 communicating with a mortise or recess 22 in the body post 19. rlhe other leaf B has a tapering casing or housing 23 adapted to engage the mortise or recess 22 throilgh the slot 21. Extending through the hinge leaf B within the casing is the end of an operating rod 2a'- with which curved bolt members 25 are pivotally connected, said bolt members being capable of being retracted within the housing 23 when the operating rod 24 is moved outward from the hinge leaf B, By moving the operating rod 24e in an inward direction, the curved bolt members 25 will be projected through slots 26 in the housing 23 so as to engage the re cess 22 through the slot 21. When the bolts are thus projected the hinge leaf A will lie in the path of the bolts 25 and will thus prevent the opening of the door.
The operating rod 24e has been shown as being provided with an upwardly extending arm or lever 27 which is pivoted at 28 0n the door I). By operating thelever 27 which is provided with a handle at its upper extremity the operating rod 24 may be actuated to project or retract the bolts 25. By making the rod 24 and the lever 27 integral and of resilient material, such as a resilient metal rod, the operating rod may be made to frictionally engage the aperture formed for the passage thereof in the hinge leaf B, the friction thus created being found sufficient to maintain the parts in adjusted position. rIhe operation, however, may be materially assisted by the use of a small flat bow spring 29, the limbs of which are terminally engaged with recesses 30 in the arms 25, the spring serving to exert a spreading action on the arms 25 which will thereby be projected radially through the slots 26, the spring serving also to assist in maintaining the arms or bolts 25 in the projected position illustrated in Fig. 4.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is
l. A hinge composed of leaves, one of said leaves having a slot and the other leaf having a tapered housing adapted for engagement with said slot, and bolt members Within the housing adapted t0 be projected therethrough for engagement with the opposed hinge leaf, and means for actuating the bolt members.
2. A hinge composed of leaves, one of said leaves having a slot and the other leaf having a tapered housing adapted for engage-- ment with said slot, and bolt members Within the housing adapted to be projected therethrough for engagement with the opposed hinge leaf, in combination with an operating rod with which the bolt members are pivotally connected.
3. A door hinge for automobiles and the like comprising two leaves connected, respectively, with posts of the vehicle body and the door, the leaf connected with the body post having a slot and said body post r having a recess communicating with the slot, the opposed leaf having a housing adapted to enter the recess through the slot, bolt members Within the housing and adapted to be projected therethrough, an operoperating rod with which the bolt members are pivotally connected, and a spring terminally connected with the bolt members to assist in projecting the same.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of tWo Witnesses.
FRANK H. WIZOREK.
