BENJAMIN ERY, 0E ERIE, PENNSYLVANIA, AssIeNoR To THE ART NOVELTY COMPANY, .(LIMITEDJ 0E sAME PLAGE.
coMBlNATloN- LOCK- SPECIFICATION forming. part of Letters Patent No. 380,028, dated March 2 7, 1888.`
Application filed October 3, 1887. Serial No. 251,358. (Model.)
To aZZ whom t may concern.-
Beit known that I, BENJAMIN FRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Erie, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new anduseful Improvements in Combination-Locks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enableothers skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, forming part of this specification.
My invention consists in the improvements in combination-locks for post-office boxes and for other like purposes, hereinafter set forth and explained, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in'which- Figure l is a perspective view of myimprovement on the door of a post-office box. Fig. 2 shows a view in elevation of the outside of the lock on the door. Fig. 3 shows a like view of the inside of same. Fig. i-shows a vertical section of the same on the line .fr in 'Fig'. 2, looking in the direction of the arrow.
Fig. 5 shows a longitudinal section of same on the line y in Fig. 2, looking in the direction of the arrow. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of my improvement, showing a modified form of bolt and catch mechanism. Fig. 7 is a view in elevation of the inside of the said modifi.- cation. Y
Like letters refer to like parts in all of the figures. y
In the construction of my improvement shown, A is a post-office box, and B the door of same. On the outside of the door B, I make, preferably, two circular depressions to receive dials C and D, which dials are provided with letters or figures (not shown) in the usual man ner. These dials are provided with knobs C and D. From the dial D a spindle, d, passes through an opening in the door B, in which opening the spindle d rotates.
On the inner end of the spindle d, I secure a serrated locking-disk, E,by means of a washer, d', the end of the spindle d being slightly flattened to fit the oblong hole in the center of the Washer d', which is secured in place by means of a screw, d2, in the end of the spindle d, so that the washer cannot turn on the spindle. Y
In the edge of the disk E, Imake a slot o r notch, e, to receivelug e on thefend J of the lockinglever F, which lockinglever F is mounted upon a stud-pin, f, on the inside of the door B.
The spindle c of the dial() passes through a vertically-slotted opening, G, in the door B- and through a round hole in arm K of the lockinglever F, in which hole the spindle c rotates. 'A serrated locking-disk, H, is secured to the inner end of the spindle c in the manner hereinbefore described as to the spindle d and locking-disk D, the spindle c andthe dial C and locking-disk H thereon being supported and rotating upon the bearing of the spindle c in the arm K of the locking-lever F.v The serrated disk H is also provided with a notch or slot, h, adapted to pass over a lug, I, on the inside of the door B when the disk His depressed, as hereinafter described.
The lockinglever F is pivoted upon a study pin, f, as hereinbefore described, the short end J thereof being provided with a lug, e', adapted 75 to engage with the periphery ofthe disk E or pass into the notch e therein when in proper position therefor. The outer end, Ii, of the arm K forms the bolt portion of the lockinglever F, and is adapted to engage with a catch on the inside of the box A.
The arm K- of the locking-lever `F is supported in the normal position shown in the full lines thereof in Fig. 3 by a spring, N, secured to the inside of the door B,which spring permits the arm K of the locking-lever F and the dial Q and locking-disk H thereon to be depressed, asillustrated in the dotted lines 'in Fig. 3. y
On the inside of the box A, I secure a lever,
'0, having a catch, P, thereon in suitable position to engage with and secure the bolt Ll of the lock when the door is closed. The lever O is pivoted upon a stud-pin, R, and provided with a spring, o, adapted to retain the lever O in the normal position illustrated in Fig. 1. rllhe rear end, S, of the lever O, I'extend back some distance along the inside of the box A, the end thereof being preferablyprovided with a thumb-piece, T, by means whereof the rear Ioo end of the lever O can be depressed, so as to disengage the hook P thereon from the lock bolt L. The end of the hook P is also beveled o in such shape that pressure applied to the outside of the door causes the bolt L to raise the hook P until,'when the door is entirely closed, it passes into the hook' and engages therewith. It will thus be seen that by means of the movable catch O P, I can either open the door from the inside of the box A or close and lock it from the outside without operating the dials C and D, forming the combination.
In Figs. 6 and 7 Ishowa modified construction of the bolt and catch for accomplishing the same purpose as hereinbefore described. In this construction I make the bolt portion L of the locking-lever F somewhat longer than that shown in Figs. 1, 3, and 5, and on this extension I secure a sliding bolt, L', by means of slots n n therein and bolts n n', so that it will move longitudinally on the bolts n n the length of the slots 'n n. I also secure to this bolt L a knob, l, which can be conveniently reached from the inside of the box to slide back the bolt L. At the inner end of the bolt L', I place a spring, U, which operates to keep the bolt L in the normal position shown' in Figs. 6 and 7.
On the inside of the box A, adjacent to the end of the bolt L', I place a catch, O', having abeveled end, P', so that pressure applied to the outside of the door causes the end of the bolt L to travel up on the bevel P until it is forced into the slot P2 by the action ofthe spring U, so that the lock can be closed from the outside or opened from the inside, as hereinbefore described.
In operating my improved lock from the outside the dial D is iirst turned until the notch ein the disk E is opposite the lug e on the end J of the locking-lever F. The dial C is then turned until the notch h in the disk H is opposite the lug I on the door. Then by depressing the knob C, the arm K of the locking-lever F moves downward, as illustrated by the dotted lines in Figs. 3 and 7, until the bolt is disengaged from the catch, when the door of a lever-bolt mounted and oscillating on a.
stiidpin in the lock-frame, a stationary dial mounted on a spindle operating in the lockframe, and a movable dial mounted on a spindle operating in the lever-bolt, with a stud on the oscillating bolt adapted to engage a locking-disk secured to the spindle of the stationary dial, a stud on the lock-frame adapted to engage a locking-disk secured to the spindle of the movable dial, and a spring adapted to raise and support the outer end of the lever-bolt,
substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, with the bolt of a. combinationlock, of asupplementary sliding bolt and knob, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a combinationlock, the combination of a lever-bolt, F, mounted and oscillating upon a studpin,f, in the door B, a spring, N, on the door B, adapted to raise and support the outer end, K L, of the bolt F, a stationary dial, D, mounted on a spindle, d, operating in the door B, a movable dial, C, mounted on a spindle, c, in the lever-bolt F, a stud-pin, e', on the arm .I of the lever-bolt F, and astudpin, I, on the door B, with a catch, O P, on the door-frame A, adapted to engage the end L of the bolt F, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I aix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
BENJAMIN FRY.
