ALBERT HUIDZIAK, OF KEMMEBER, WYOMING.
'rnUNK-LocK.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT HUDZIAK, acitizen of the United States, residing at Kemmerer, in the county of Lincoln and State of -Wyoming, have invented certain others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and then claimed.
In the drawings forming a part of this application and in which like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views,
Figure 1 is a central sectional view through the device arranged upon a box.
Fig. 2 is an elevational view of the lock with the front plate removed and the trunk lid shown in section, the mechanism being illustrated by dotted lines in its releasing arrangement.
Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the trunk showing the escutcheon plate.
Fig. at is a perspective view of the lock casing.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the front,
removed.
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the bolt member.
Fig 7 is a perspective view of the kee er.
Fig. 8 is a perspective view of the olt actuator, and
Fig. 9 is a perspective view of the key.
It will be understood that the present lock may be employed for many uses such as the securing of the lid 10 and trunk or box 11 in its closed position. A keeper 12 of the form best illustrated in Fi 7 of the drawing is secured to the lower f ace of the lid 10 by screws 13 and is arranged with a plurality of depending hooks 14 which pro- Specifica'tion of Letters Patent.

Application filed July 28, 1917. Serial no. 183,321.
ject through slots 15 in the adjacent end plate 16 of a mechanism casing 17 secured to the front side or wall 18 of the trunk.
The said casing 17 is arranged with a front cover plate 19 flatly engaging the trunk wall 18. while the top plate 16 of the casing overlies the front plate 19 and is secured as at 20 to the upper edge of said wall 18. plate 19 while a tube 22 extends through the trunk wall 18 adapted for insertion of the key 23 therethrough for operating the mechanism within the casing 17, it being noted that an escutcheon plate 2t is provided at the outer end of the tube 22 retained in position by screws 25.
A U-shaped bolt 26 is shiftably arranged within the casing 17 slidably arranged upon the inner side 24 of the casing while a cross strip 28 attached to inwardly bent ears 29 of the opposite sides 30 of the casing passes through opposite slots 31 in the said bolt, thereby maintaining the bolt in sliding arrangement within the casing.
A leaf-spring 32 is supported by a screw 33 upon the casing wall 27 and normally engages the adjacent side 34 of the bolt 26 normally maintaining the bolt projected toward the stop lug 35 arranged within the path of movement thereof. The spring 32 engages the bolt side 34 inwardly of the strip 28 while the stop 35 is also arranged inwardly thereof.
A depending lug 36 is carried by the connecting side 37 of the bolt 26 having a substantially triangular shaped actuator 38 pivoted thereto as at 39 while a spring 40 anchored to the casing wall 27 as at 41 engages the curved side or base 42 of the actuator 38.
A post 43 is carried by the casing wall 27 A key hole slot 21 is arranged in the of the actuator 38, it will be seen that the Y actuator will be slightly swung upon its pivot 39 until such engagement takes place and thereafter a reversal in the direction of rotation of the key 23 forces the actuator 38 and the bolt 26 against the action of the spring 32 to the dotted line positions shown in Fig. 2 and thereby releasing the hook flanges 52 from the keeper hooks 14.
It will be seen that a serviceable lock is provided in which the mechanism is nor mally arranged as shown by full lines in Fig. 2 and it Will be evident that upon closing the lid 10 that the keepers 14 will slide past the bolt flanges 5:2 and become automatically locked by engagement therewith. The bolt 26 may be readily retracted in the manner described by a person familiar with the insertion operation of the key 23 but a person unfamiliar therewith will turn the key in either direction, only swinging the actuator 30 upon its pivot 39 without in any manner aifecting the bolt 26 or releasing the lock mechanism while the spring 40 will return the actuator to its normal position ready to be employed for retracting the bolt 26.
\Vhat I claim as new is l. A lock comprising a casing, a keeper having depending hooks arranged within the'case when the device is closed, a U- shaped locking bolt having terminal hook flanges within the path of movement of the said keeper hooks and having opposite notches therein, a strip carried by the op posite sides of the casing freely arranged within the said notches, and a key manipulated actuator for said bolt.
2-. A lock comprising a casing, a keeper having depending hooks arranged within the case when the device is closed, a U- shaped locking bolt having terminal hook flanges Within the path of movement of the said keeper hooks and having opposite notches therein a strip carried by the opposite sides of the casing freely arranged Within the said notches, a triangular shaped actuator pivoted to said bolt having a depending sharpened lug, a positioning spring engaging the side of said actuator opposite the said lug, a key post Within the casing adjacent the said lug a key adapted for positioning upon the said post having its bit provided with a groove in its free end adapted for the reception of the said lug during the operation of the device In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature.
ALBERT HUDZIAK.
