Application filed February 8, 1909.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, DUFFY L. CAMPBELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rosemary, in the county of Halifax, State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in G0mbina tion-Padlocks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled inthe art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to combination padlocks, and has for one of its objects to simplify and improve the construction and in crease the efficiency and utility of devices of this character.
l Vith this and other objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claims, and in the drawings illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved device. Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same. Fig. 3 is a view of the lock with the cover detached and with the locking disks in position therein. Fig. 4 is a sec tion on the line tt of Fig. 3.
The improved device comprises a casing formed in two parts, the body portion 10 which contains the locking mechanism and the cover 11 detachably secured to the body by one or more rivets or similar fastening devices 12, the casing and the cover portion being of ordinary form.
Swinging at 13 from the casing 10 is a shackle 1d, the shackle having a notch 15 at its free end, as shown. Mounted to slide through keepers 16-17 within the body 10 is a bolt 18 with one end inclined as at 19 to engage in the notch 15, and with a spring 20 operating to maintain the bolt yieldably in engagement with the shackle.
Slidable through keepers 21 is a presser member 22 having a projection 23 engaging against the inner end of the shackle 1% when the latter is in its inward position, the mem ber 22 maintained yieldably in its outward position by a spring 24:. By this means it will be obvious that when the end 25 of the shackle 14: is released, the bolt 18 and the- Specification of Letters Patent.

in position to receive the shackle 1% when the latt r is inserted into the body of the easing. lVhen the shackle is thus inserted, its inclined terminal 25 will displace the bolt 18 and the portion 23 of the member 22 against the action of the springs 2O2 1, and when the notch 15 passes the inclined end 19 of the bolt, the latter will be forced by its spring 20 into engagement with the notch and-thus lock the shackle to the casing. lVhen the bolt 18 is released by the unlocking mechanism, hereafter described, the spring 2% will exert its force to eject the shackle from the casing.
Projecting through the cover member 11 at spaced intervals are two stub shafts 2627, the shafts having knobs 2829 at their outer ends and carrying disks 3031 at their inner ends within the casing. The disk 30 is provided with a notch 32 in its rim while the disk 31. is provided with a similar notch 33 in its rim. Arranged within the body 10 of the casing are two guides 34e-3: spaced apart, and slidably operating through those guides are pins 36-3?, the pins connected by a bar 38. The bar 38 is provided with depending studs 39%0 adapted to enter the notches 32-33, when the disks 30-31 are arranged in certain predetermined positions, as hereafter explained.
Connected to the bar 38 is a rod etl extending through a notch 12 in the bottom of the body portion 10, the rod having a knob 13 externally of the casing. Surrounding the rod 11 between the rod 38 and the body portion of the casing is a spring 11 operating to maintain the bar 38 and its studs 39 1O yieldably in their upward positions.
Pivoted at 45 in the body 10 of the casing a bell crank lever 16, one arm of the lever extended for contact with a stud 4E7 extending from the bolt 18, while the other arm of the bell crank is connected by a rod 48 to the rod 411. By this means it will be obvious that when the rod 4C1 is moved clownwardly by a pulling force applied to the knob 13, the bolt 18 will be moved laterally to release the shackle 1 1.
The disks 3031 are provided respectively with tension springs or brakes d950, to prevent them from moving too freely.
Formed upon the outer face of the cover 11 are semiglobular projections 51-52 sur- 2829 are adjustably connected to their re-' spective stub shafts, so that they may be adjusted rotatively relative to the graduations, and thus alternate their positions, to alter the combination to any required extent.
The stub shafts 2(327 are provided respectively with heads 575S, and these heads are provided with openings to receive screws 5960 by which the knobs may be adjustably coupled to the stub shafts, as shown.
It will be understood that in order to en able the lock to be opened, it will be neces sary to so adjust the disks 308l as to locate the notches 8233 opposite the studs 3940 of the bar 38, to enable the bar to be moved by a pulling force applied to the knob 43, this movement, as above described, causing the operation of the bolt 18. It will be understood, however, that this movement of the bar 38 cannot be accomplished unless the disks 3081 are located as above described, and by adjusting the knobs and fingers 5556 relative to the graduations 5354, it will be obvious that the graduations and fingers may be so located as to cause the notches 3233 of the disks to be adjusted in position to receive the studs 39%0, when a pulling force is applied to the knob 43.
It will be obvious that a very large variety of combinations may be devised to render the opening of the lock practically impossible by any person not in possession of the selected combination.
