ERS PMOTOLIYMOGRAPHER, WASHINGYON D C @l l a @i MI@ uw y @tiamina that f @itu/t.,
FREDRICK EGGE, OF BRIDGEPOR'I, CONNECTICUT.
Letters .Patent No. 86,37 7 dated Februa/ry 2, 1863.
IMPROVEMENT IN PADLocKsI The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the lame.
To all whom it may concern: v
Be it `known that I, FREDRICK EGGE, of Crempe, in Holstein, temporarily residing in Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield, and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Padlocks; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of .this specification, and represent, in-
Figure l, a front view;
Figure 2, the same,` with the outer plate removed; and in Figure 3, the saine as iig. 2, with the bolt drawn.
This invention is designed more particularly for what are termed mail-bag locks, but are alike applicable to the uses of an ordinary padlock; and
The invention consists in the arrangement of a bolt upon a point centrally within a circular' case, so that the key operates the bolt bystriking below the point, and turning in the opposite direction to the movement of the bolt,-and having combined therewith one or more tumblers, to add to the security of' the lock.
In order to the clear understanding of my invention, I will proceed to fully describe the same as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
The ease,A, is of a circular form, having anoteh, B, opening through its edge.
C is the bolt, formed' upon or attached to a lever, D, the said lever pivoted at a central point, (1 inthe case, the lever extending below the said point, so that, by turning the key, as from the position in fig. 2, to that in tig. 3, the key will strike the lever D below the point a, and turn the bolt in the opposite direction, as from the position in fig. 2 to that in fig. 3.
A spring, j, bearing against the bolt, lserves to throw the bolt forward into the position denoted in fig. 2, so that, continuing the movement of the key until it`escapes from' the lever, then the bolt will be returned by the spring to the position in fig. 2. Thus the natural position of the bolt is to be closed, as in figs. -l and 2, as it is only withdrawn while'the key is bearing against the lower` arm ofthe lever D, as seen in iig. 3.
At a convenient point, d, within the case, I arrange one or more tulnblers, E, to be operated by they key in the usual manner as tumblers in other locks, and so that, by the turning ofthe key, the notch i and the several tumblers will come into corresponding position with each other, and in such relative position td aprojection, n, on the lever D, that a continued movement of the key, after having adjusted the several tumblers, Will, in turning the' bolt, throw the projection n 'into the notches fi, of the tumblers, as seen in iig. 3, springs, h, actuating the tulnblers Vto return to the position seen in iig. 2, when freed from the action ofthe key.
Having thus fully described my invention,
What I claim as new and useful, and desire to'secure by Letters Patent, is-
The hereindescribed padlock, having the bolt C attached to one arm of the lever D, and provided' with the spring j, the said lever D being pivoted, so that the key will strike the other arm of the lever and move the bolt in the opposite direction to the turning of the key, the said spring operating to return the bolt into, its locked position, combined with one or more tumblers, E, the whole constructed and arranged so as to operate as herein set forth.
