IMPROVEMENT. IN PIANO-LOCKS.
The Schedule referred to` in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it knownthat I, ROBERT J. JORDAN, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Piano and Sewing- Machine Looks; and I do hereby declare' thalt the following is a full, clear, andV exact description thereof',
which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same,'reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding .parts Myinvention has for its object to furnish animprovement inthe construction of locks, designed esecially for piano and sewing-machine locks, but equally applicable for other locks, and hymeans of which a neat, simple, and reliable lock is produced;

The rear, or. inner end'o'i the sliding plate Bis slotted to receive the stem, or shank of the guard-plate D, the' shoulders, or ends of the body of which plate rest upon the plate B, and keep it close to the lock-plate A, while being operated.
TheV upper part of the plate D is slotted to receive the stem, orl neck of the bolt C.
The forward part of the neck of the bolt is formed with a shoulder, of such asjze and form as, when in proper position, to be received into the slot of the plate D, as shown in iig. l; but which, when the bolt is thrown or locked, serves asa stop to preventthe bolt from beingpushed back.-

shown in figs. 1 and 2,. so that the operation of pushing the bolt C forward 4or back, may revolve the' bolt through one-quarter of a revolution.

The edge of the sliding plate B, andthe side ofthe bolt C, are recessed, as shown in iigs. 1 and 2,'sothat theylnay be acted upon by the key, to move them back and forth. r

Then, as the sliding plate B is carried forward, its advance causes the bolt G to revolve one-quarter of a revolution, so that its head may catch upon the catch-plate E.
In unlockingthe lock, these movements are exactly reversed, the first effect of the key being -to move th plate B back, revolving the bolt G to its former position.
The bolt O and plate B are then carried back together, until the head of the bolt C has been Withdrawn from the catch-plate E, and into its place in the face-plate of the lock.

The other end of the spring F is divided, one part resting against the bolt C, and the other part resting against the sliding plate-B-, as shown in figs. l and 2.
