Description
` To all whom tt maj/,conectan v I gaat esta JOSEPH P. WHITE., or
SAVANNAH, esonera.
,Letters Patent N 95,058, dated SeptemberQl, 1869.
/ `Irvmnov.EMPNT im CoMBINeTIoN-Locxs.
The Schedule` referredto in these `Letters Patent and making part of the same.
Be it known that I, J osnrn l?.- WHITE, of Savannah, in the county of Chatham, and State of Georgia, have invented a new and improved Combination-Lock; and I do hereby declare that. the following isy a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will 'enable others skilled in the art tomake and use the same,
reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming'part of this specification.
This inventionrelates to improvements in combina* tion-locks, having for its object to Aprovide a simple and cheaplock capable of a greatnumber of combinations.
Itconsists in a series of vibrating tnmblers, notched at the ends, for the reception of a lng on the bolt when sliding back for unlocking, which areprovided with auxiliary tnmblers, to be acted on by a series of rotating eccentric disks, worked bythe key to move the said tumblers for bringing the notches therein to the position coinciding with the lu'g on the holt,-to allow it to be retracted. Y
lhese auxiliary tumblers. are engaged with the others by spring-dogs, when the bolt is in the locked condition, and the whole are suspended on the camwheels, so thatthe notches dov not coincide with the lng on the bolt, thereby preventing its withdrawal.
When the bolt is withdrawn into the notches ofthe `tnmblers, it disengages the ends of the auxiliary tumblers from the spring-dogs, by which they are connected to the main tumblers..
These auxiliary tumblers thenrest on' the edges of the eccentric wheels, and the latter are then adjusted j for any desired cbmbination, which may be determined by an indicator-scale around the key-hole.
Oil throwing'the bolt forward for locking, the anxiliary tumblers will be so engaged at the moment of the escape of the lug from the notches of the tumblers,
with the aforesaid spring-dogs, that for unlocking, the eccentric wheels must be brought to the saine position they occupied when locking', in .order thatthe notches of the tumblers (which -are then suspended on the eccentric wheels, through the` medium of the auxiliary tumblers,) will coincidewith the lug.
Figure l represents a rearv View of my improved lock, with the back of the c'ase removed.
Figure 2 represents a longitudinal section, taken on .A the line :1c-:t of fig, 1. l
Figure 3 represents `a plan view of one of the auxiliary tumblers.
Figure 4 represents a plan View of one of the main tumblers..

Figure 6 represents a side 'view of the `eccentric disks. j
represents a front view of the indicator- Figure 7 represents one ofthe eccentric disks.

A represents the bolt, having a broad iiat extension, Af,'slotted at B, to slide back and forth on .the
studB.,` f f It is also provided at the rear and behind the'extension A with a lug, 0 clearly shown in dotted lines in iig. 1.
' A series of three or more tumblers, D, is pivoted on the said stud B, with its free ends `having notches,
D1, extending to the bolt A. lhese notches are to receive the lug O of the bolt when it is retracted.
5 E represents a series of auxiliary tumblers, equal in number to the tumblers D, and also pivoted to the bolt B. They are shorter than the tumblers D, but project in the same direction, and have projections, E', to be acted on by the cam-wheels F.
They are arranged alternately with the main tinnblers D, as clearly shown in the section iig. 2.
The latter have, at their free ends, right-angled spring-dogs, D2, so pivoted to their faces that the short arms D3, which are'suitably curved on the sides, will be forced by the springs D, to some extent, into ythe path of the lug O, when entering the notches D.
lhe long arms of these dogs are provided with studs,
tumblers E, when not disengaged by the lug C wedging into the notches DI, against the short arms D3.
The eccentric disks F are pivoted on the spindle F1 of the key, andv arranged opposite the projections El` of the auxiliary tuinblers E, one disk for each tumbler.
The cam-teeth or projections on the said disksmay be made in any preferred order. The disks are loose on the spindle, and the latteris provided with an arm, F2, projecting from the'inner end, and having a stud, F3, for engaging a hole in the face of the innermost disk to turn it,
The central disk is turned by the irstthrongh a connection formed by studs F4 projecting from their adjacent faces, and the other disk is similarly, moved by the middle one. 'In this way each disk may be moved 'by the key, and adj usted to any required position.
rlhe indicator-scale G, around the4 key on ,the front of the lock, is designed to have as Ymany numbers as there are projections on the earn-wheels.
H represents the dog for locking the bolt, and
I represents springs, for bearing on the upper edges of the auxiliary tumblers at K, for pressing them down on the cam-wheels.
XVhen the bolt is unlocked, the spring-dogs are thrown out of connection with the notched ends'of the auxiliary tnmblers, as previously stated, leaving the latter free Vto be moved by the `cam-wheels to per- D5, for engaging with the notched-'ends of the auxiliary mit the latter to be set for any desired combination, which is done as follows:
The combination being determined upon, say 1-4 -6, the key is drawn outward so as to press the stud t -L broughttogure 1, settingthe disk a( The key is then pushed forward to disengage the stud from the hole in the disk a, when it is in position to act on the dog H, and the extension A of the bolt for locking it.
e When it is lso locked, the auxiliary tnmblers E, resting Q on the cams as set by the combination used as above stated, will be connected to thermain tumblers D by the springdog and this connection will be sdch that I more the cams must stand in precisely thel saine position when it is required to retract the bolt, or all the notches will not be in the right position to receive the lugC.
If it is notfrequired to use all the cam-disks in makng up-a combination, only one or twjo may be used,
the others not being disturbed.
-Having thus described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Let' l. The tuinblers D, auxiliary tumblers E, springdogs D, and bolt A, arranged substantially as specified.
Y 2. The combination of the tumblers VD, auxiliary tumblers E, and eccentric disks' F, substantially as specified.
