Be it knownA that I, H. JACKSON, of the city, county,l and State of New York, have invented a new and improved Lock; and I do hereby declare that the following isafull, clear,'andexact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use thesame, reference being' had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, l

This invention consists of an expanding stump arranged'in relation with tumblers, and a slide-bolt 0f peculiar construction, as hereinafter fully shown and described, whereby a greater security than vhitherto is obtained against the picking of the lock.; and the invention further consists in coi'ru'gating or notching one edge of the tumblers, and having a pin on aI slideto engage with the notches and prevent the tumblers being moved or tampered with by a pick when brought in contact with the stump,'which arrangement also serves as a safeguard' against picking. In the accompanying sheet ofdrawings- I Figure 1 represents an internal vview of the lockin a locked state, with the tumblers in a loose state, or acted upon only by their springs.

A represents the case of the lock, constructed in the usual or in any proper manner, and is the bolt, which is constructed of two parts, a 6, the part a being the bolt proper, and the part t avslide, which is not connected tothe bolt proper or partfa in a'direct manner, but through the intervention of the tumblers. Figs e 3 and 4 show the parts bof the bolt plainly.` C represents a stump, which is composed of two parts, v c', working on one and the same pivot, d. These parts areliept distended'or separated by -springs e.' D represents a series of tumblers, any proper number being used. These tuimbler's are all fitted on one and the' same pin, f, which is attached to the part a ofthe bolt proper, and each tumbler has a spring, g', attached, whichsprings have a tendency to keep the ends of the tumblers against estop, h, as shown in figs. 1 and 2. The tumblers e D are all slotted, as shown at z', at different, points, so as to requirethe different tumblers to be moved at different distances i-n order to bring the several slots in line withv each other, in order that the slots z' may receive the stump C and -admit of the vtumblers D- being shoved back, and with them the bolt B. The slide part b of the bolt B has a pin, j, .projecting from it, which bears against the inner edges of the tumblers and movessaid tumblers back when the key acts against the slide 6,'the tumhlers forming'thc connectionybetween a and b, 'as

before stated. The bits of .the key are so formed that in turning the key to unlock the lock, the tumblers D are tiret moved to bring the several slots z' all in Aline with each other to receive lthe stump, the key, after the tumblers are thus adjusted, then acting against slide b and forcingthe tumblers back,'and with them the 'part a ofthe bolt proper. Y

Inl order, however, that this lmaybe accomplished, the stump C must be compressed or contracted,-as the springs e keep the parts c c distended, so that the slots z' are too narrow to receive it. the stump is eifeeted by the slide 6, theend of which .near the stump has a slot, 7c, made in it, having a V-shaped outer edge, so that when the slide b is moved toward the stump, underthe action of the key, the bevelled edge of the'notch will actiipon theends of the parts c c of the stump-and. compress the same together so that the slots z' of the tumblers can receive the stump, the stump of course being compressed just previous to the slots 'i reaching it. This serves .as a great safeguard vagainst picking, as it completely bailes the obtaining cfaA pressure of the tumblers against the stump witla view of ascertaining the position of the slots in the tum'blers.

Besides this safeguard, the pin j of the' slide 6 is also made to perform la like oihce, as the edges ofthe tumblers f against which it bears are notched or slotted, as shown at Z, and when the slide b is forced back under the actionv of the key to move the tumblers bacl the pin j catches into one of the notches of .each tumbler and locks the Same, so that they cannot be moved or turned on their pin f atall. Hence all tampering with the tumblers in order to obtain a pressure on the stump is avoided.

This compressing of The springs g of the tumblers are formed 'with heads m on their inner ends, to it in holes 'n in the tumblers at'the inner ends of the slots o, as shown in figs. land 2.

By. this arrangement the springs are prevented from being casually drawn out from the tumblers. The stop pin h is important, as it limits the throw of the tumblers under the notion of their springs -g,.cmd insures o. proper position of the tumblers each time the key is molde to act upon them to unlock the leek.

Having thus described my inventionnwhat I claimzts new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The bolt B, composed of the two parts a b, the former, a, having the tumblers D attached, und the latter, b, provided {vith the pin j, to act ngainst the tunblers in order to force them back, and with thein the bolt, substantially s shown and described.

2. The notches at the edges ofthe tumblers D, against which the pnj bears, in order tolock the tumblels after their slots z' have been adjusted in line with the stump C, substantially us shown und described.

3. The expanding stump C, in combination with the slide AZ5 of the holt, provided with the slot k, for compressing the stump in order that the slots z' may receive it, vsillistantinlly as' set forth.
