To ALL WHOM fr MAY eoNoERN:
eV it'known that I, GUSTAv SeiIUMAcnEn, of the city and State of New York, have invented, made, and applied to use a certain new and useful Improvement in Locks; and I do hereby declare thc following to be n full, clear, and exact description of the said invention, part of this specification, wherein- Figure 1 is an .elevation of the lock in position to be used as a Latch, the cap-plate being removed.
Figure 2 is a similar view, representing the key in position for projecting the latch-bolt, and
Figure 3 is an elevation of the lock in a slightly-modified form.
Similar marks of reference denote the same parts. I
This invention enables me to use the lock as a latch, operated by n. handle or by a key,and also as a lock, ope-rated only by the key.
Said invention consists in a tumbler, combined with a sliding latch-bolt, having two talons for the key, the one to allow of the key being used to draw back the lntch, at which time the tumbler is inoperative, so that tho handle on the'insidc can be turned, the other talon allowing the key to projectthe latch as a bolt by lifting the tumbler, at which tinte the studs on thebolt come into such a position to the-cam or toe on the handle-spindle that said toe cannot act to draw back the latch. Hence, when the lock is locked, the key has to be revolved twice, or else the key turned once,'to draw the bolt into the l'at'chposition, and then the handle turned, to open the'door.
In the drawing, a is the box of the lock b, the' com for the spindle of the handle. This may be made for o, handle on one or on both sides.
Yb is the latch-bolt, formed with a latch or inclined end, 1, a strap, 2, passing around the cam I1, and lugs 3, for said cam to operate on'in drawing back the latch. 4 is tho talon for the key to act against in drawing back the latch, (see iig. 1.) 5 is the talon for the key in projecting and retracting the bolt. v c is a tumbler; or there may be several tumblers. In figs.. 1 and 2, I have shown this tumbler on a stud, 6, with a spring, 7, and also acted on by the arm 8 of the latch-spring 9. In lig. 3, I have shown the tumbler as attached to 'the arm 8.
The' notch 19 in the bolt is sufficiently long to allowthe latch to be drawn back regardless of the stud 10 on the tumbler c; but, when the bolt is projected, the stud 10 falls into the notch l1, and the bolt cannot be drawn back until thc tumbler is lifted, and the projection of the bolt brings the studs 3 so far towards the point of the toe b that said toe cannot exert any power to draw the bolt back, the said toe acting on the inner faces of such studs What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isl A sliding latch-bolt, provided with studs, 3, for the cam b to act against, and wit-h two talons, 4 and 5, for the kcy to act upon, in combination with the tumbler c, stud 10,aud notches 11 and 19, as and for the purposes set forth.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my signature, this third day of October, A. D, 18137.
GUSTAV SCHUMACHER.
