Description

W. H. TAYLOR. DIAL LOOK. APPLICATION FvILHD MAY l, 1912.
Patented Oct. 29, 191:2.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WARREN H. TAYLOR, OF STAMFORCD', CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE YALE & 'IOWNE MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OVF STAMFORD, CONNECTICUT.
DIAL-LOCK.
Application led May 1, 1912. Serial No. 694,537.
specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 29,1912,
To all lwhom it may concern Be it known that I. WARREN I-I. TAYLOR, a
Vcitizen of the United States, residing at Stamford. in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful' Improvements in Dial- Locks; and I do hereby declare the followy ing to be a full, clear, and exact description of, the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains' to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in dial locks, ,and it consists in means actuated by a key lock carried bythe dial for l is a view in plan of my improvement. Fig.4 2 is a View in' section through the dial and its knob or thumb turn and bolt, and showing the key lock in elevation. Fig.; 3 is an inner end view of the dial knob or thumb turn; Fig. 4 is a view of the inner face ot' the dial showing the locking bolt and Fig.
5 is a detached view o'fthe lock cylinder.
l represents a dial ring and 2 thedial mounted to turn therein and provided with a spindle, which is-rigid with the dial,`and
which actuates.`the bolt locking and releasing mechanism, which latter may be of any l construction. The dial 2 is provided with a knob or thumb turn 4, which, in the'pres-4 ent instance, is hollow and is secured to the dial by the rivets 5 and is provided with a sleeve 6`which passes through a flanged opening .in the ring l, andforms an enlarged bearing and .support for the spindle 3. The outer openend of the knob or thumbA turn 4, is closed by the outer plate 8 'of the pin tumbler lock 9, which is secured to the baseA of the knob or thumb turn by the screws 10. The pin tumbler lock 9vis provided with A the usual cylinder and plug, the latter adapted to -be rotated by a key 12, and the.
plug vcarries a pin 14 which engages and rocks'the cranklever la mounted-t0 turn inthe base of the knob 4. One member or armvof the crank lever rests against the inner face of the base of the knob 4, and the other Amember or arm rests against the outer face of said baselandis provided with a pin 16 which rests a'ind moves within an elongated slot 17 inthe bolt 18. This bolt is slidingly mounted in bearings 19 carried by the dial 2, and is held against accidental sliding movement by the spring 20 having a rib or shoulder 2l adapted toenter notches 22 in the side edge of the bolt and positively lock the latter against accident-al movement. The end of the bolt normally rests fiush with the periphery of the dial so as 'not to intertere with the rotation of the di`al when the bolt is retracted, but which, when the bolt is projected, enters a recess orkeeper :23
in the ring l and locks the dial against rotation. In the present inst-ance I have shown four keepers located ninety degrees apart,
but I may use more or less, hence 'itjvill be seen that by inserting and turning the key, and if necessary rotating the dial unt-il the bolt alines with a keeper, the dial may be locked against any turning movement, thus increaslng to a material extent, the safety of the lock.
I would have it understood that I do not 4conine myself to the details of 'the mechanisms intermediate'the inner end of the plug and the bolt for actuating the latter, but claim broadly any connecting mechanism whereby a rotation Vof the key plug will actuate the bolt.
Having fully described my invention' what'I claim as new and desire to secure by .Letters-Patent, is
-1. In a diallock, the combination of a dial, a ring. embracing the edge of the dial and having a keeper, and a key lock, and bolt carried by the dial, the said; fbolt adapted to be actuated by the key' lock whereby-'the dial may be locked to and released from the ring. y
2. In a dial lock, the combination of a dial having a hollow` knob or thumb turn, a ring embracing the periphery of the dial and provided with a keeper, a bolt carried by the dial and adapted to be projected toward the keeper and a key lock within the knob or thumb turn for actuating' the bolt.
' I' 8. n a dial look, the combination of a n testimony Vwhereof l have signed this dial having a hollow knob o1' thumb turn, .specification in the presence of two subscriba fing enclrclng the periphery of the dial., `mg Witnesses. a pintumbler lock Wthnthe knob andftt, f WARREN H. TAYLOR. 5 bolt carried by the dial and actuated Vhy the' Wtn'essesz lock and adapted to engago a koepel' formed t J; A. GAYLOR,
