DOOR-LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented oet.v 10.1916.
Application filed July 22, 1916. Serial No. 110,713.
To all whom t may conce/rn Be it known that I, BENJAMIN F. I-IIG- vGINs, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Locks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improve- `ments in door locks and itis an object of the invention to provide a device of this general character having novel and improved means wherein the latch is retracted upon axial rotation being imparted to a spindle.
ing novel and improved means wherein one of the knobs coacting `with the spindle is ycapable of movement independently-of the "spindle, and whereby said knob and spindle may be locked in order to cause the same to rotate in unison to eect retraction of the latcht f Furthermore it is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved latch of this general character wherein the indeconstruction and in the combination and arpendently rotatable knob may be locked to the spindle by a key disposed through the knob and coacting with the spindle, and whereby said knob may be locked to the spindle from the opposite sideof the door ythrough themedium of an endwise movable member.
The invention consists in the details of rangement of the several parts of my improved door lock whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and the door being also. indicated in section; Fig. 2is a fragmentary vertical sectional view taken through the device as illustrated in Fig. l; Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 8 3 of Fig. l; looking in the direction of the arrow; Fig. 4 1s aview in elevation of the inside knob with the retaining fiange omitted, as herein embodied; Fig. 5 is a view in perspective detached of the yoke member, herein included; and Fig. 6' isa view in plan of a. key adapted to be employed in connection with my improved door lock.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, 1 denotesaportion of a'door having produced in the edge thereof a -recess 2 to l t receive therein the casing 3 ofthe latch 4 It is also anobJect of the invention to f provide a lock of this general character havnormally maintained in a projected adjustment through the medium of the expansible member 5, herein disclosed as a conventional coil spring, surrounding the latch intermediate the head 6 thereofand theinturned flanges 7 arranged at the inner end of the casing 3. The inner end portion of the latch 4 is provided with a tubular eX- tension 8 to the outer extremity of which is clamped the yoke member 9 through the medium of the headed threaded member 10, disposedthrough the base plate 11 of the yoke member 9 operatively engaged within the bore of the tubular extension 8.
As herein disclosed, the upper and lower arms 12 of the yoke member 9 are substantially il-shape in form with their apexes triangular in plan, and disposed within the recesses aiforded by the arms 12 are the oppositely directed fingers 14 carried by the spindle 15 disposed transversely of the door 1 through a suitable opening 16 and with which communicates the recess 2 hereinbefore. referred to. By this arrangement it will be perceived that upon axial rotation being imparted to thespindle'l, the latch 4 will be retracted and that said latch will assume an extendedy or normal position under the iniuencefthe eXpansible member 5. It will also be at once noted that the formation of the arms 12 permit an inward or retracted movement of the latch 4 independently of the movement of the spindle 15 when the latch 4' or more particularly the head 6 thereof, is forced inwardly upon the shutting of the door.
rIhe spindle 15 vextends beyond opposite sides of the door 1V and coacting with the projecting portion of the spindle at the inend of said member or lkey being angularly disposed, as at 22, so that the same may be engaged within the parallel slots v23 inter- "secting the key-way or slot formed in the shank 18, whereby'said key or member'may ,be locked indifferent positionslongitudinally yof' the spindle 15 for a purpose to be hereinafter more particularly referred to. The inner end of the shank 18 1s also pro- .vided with the outwardly disposed annular flange 24; with which the annular plate or `disk -25 fixed tothe door 1 coacts in order `to maintain theknob 17 together with the shank 18, in applied position. Y 4
,The portion of the `spindle 15 which extends beyond theouter side of the door-1 is f disposed within the tubular shank 26 of the knob 27, .the inner-end of the `shank having inv threaded engagement therewith the annular member 28, 'underlying the annular disk or plate-29 afiXed to the `outer face of the door, whereby said shank 26 and knob 27 arerotatably supported. Normally the knob 27 and shank 26 are freely rotatable upon the spindle 151and when the door is closed and it is desired to retract the latch il Vfrom the outside, a key K is inserted withinthe boreof the shank 26 through a suitablefkey slot 30 formed preferably at the axial center of the knob 27, and as herein ,embodied, said key K has its inner end provided with the extensions or fingers 31 adapted to be received within the recesses or openings 32 formed in the outer end of the spindle 15 whereby it will be perceived that the spindle 15 `and knob27 will be caused to rotate in unison. It is also to' be noted that 'the inner end of the bore of the shank 26 is provided withga key-way 33 in register With thekey-way 19 in the spindle 15, so
i thatthe key or endwise movable member 2l may be moved into operative engagement 'with the shank26, whereby said shank is looked tothe spindle.` This latter arrangement `is for a purpose which is believed to be self-evident. v
Itis to be noted that the inner extremitiesof the fingers 14 ai'e integrally connected by theloop 1341 which straddles the spindle 15 and bridges the key-wayA 19` within the spindle and thereby :aording `a guide for the key orendwise movable member 21.` It Yis toxbe further lnotedthat the intermediate loop 34 lis Xed `to the spindle 15 through the medium of therivet 35 disposed. through saidloop andspindle.
*It is preferred that the key or endwise ylmovable member .21 be circular in cross `section, and itwill be readily understood from the accompanying drawings that when said key`or member hasbeen adjusted into engagement with the -shank 26, that the angular extremity 22 of the key will be enthought to be obvious that a door lock constructed in accordance with my invention is ofy an extremely simple and compara-l tively inexpensive nature and is particularly well adapted for use by reason of `the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled, andv it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change vand modification without material departure from the principles and spirit thereof vand for this reason I do not wish tobe understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice.
I claim:
1. A door lock comprising a latch mounted for reciprocatory movement, a spindle coacting with the latch for imparting movement thereto in one direction, a knob mounted upon one end of the spindle, an endwise movable key coacting with thev spindle and the knob for securing the knob to the spindle, a second knob loosely engaged with the opposite end of the spindle and provided withva key-way adapted to'be engaged with the hereinbefore-mentioned key upon movement thereof in one direction for locking the second knob to the spindle.
2. A door lock comprising a latch mounted for reciprocatory movement, a spindle coacting with the latch for impart- Y ing movement thereto in one direction, .a knob mounted upon one end of the spindle,
