21 Claims.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in lock structures and while it is illustrated as applied to vehicle door locks, it is to be understood that the same may be readily applied to locks of all characters.
Diiiiculty has been experienced in rotatably securing the lock cylinder against detachment but at the same time permitting its ready removal for legitimate repair and this invention has as an object the provision of an improved means whereby the lock cylinder may be very easily inserted in and removed from its mounting head by a person equipped with the proper key without in any wise damaging the structure.
Another object of this invention resides in the provision of an improved lock structure in which the lock cylinder is secured within its mounting head by the locking bolt.
Another object of this invention -resides in the provision of an improved lock structure wherein the locking bolt has a slot having a yieldable wall portion with which the cylinder eccentric pin is engaged when the lock is in an intermediate position whereby a pull on the key and the manipulation of a tool permits the ready removal of the cylinder from its mounting head.
And a still further object of this invention resides in the provision of an improved lock of the character described which is of eiiicient design and may be produced without added cost.
With the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, my invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts substantially as hereinafter described and more particularly dened by the appended claims, it being understood that such changes inthe precise embodiment of the hereindisclosed invention vtmay be made as come within the scope of the' claims.
In the accompanying drawing, I have illustrated one complete example of the physical embodiment of my invention constructed according to the best mode I have so far devised for the practical application of the principles thereof; and in which:
Figure 1 is a top elevational view, with parts broken away and in section, of a vehicle door lock embodying my invention;
Figure 2 is a longitudinal, sectional view, with parts in elevation, taken through Figure 1 on the plane of the line 2 2;
Figure 3 is an enlarged, detail view of the improved locking bolt illustrating the position of the yieldable portion thereof as the lock cylinder eccentric pin is being engaged therewith, said view being taken on the plane of the line 3-3 of Figure 2;
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the locking bolt detached from the lock structure, and
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the inner end 60 portion of the lock cylinder illustrating the shape of the eccentric pin.
Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawing, in which like numerals designate like parts throughout the several views, 5 designates an escutcheon of conventional construction adapted to be suitably mounted to the surface of the door or other member to be locked and having a bore 6 with which diametrically opposed locking recesses 7 communicate. The 70- inner reduced end 8 of the shank 9 of a locking handle 10 is rotatably secured in the bore of the escutcheon by a bearing or washer member 11 disposed between the escutcheon plate and a shoulder 12 at the outer end of the reduced por- 75 tion 8 land a washer 13 engaging the inner face of the escutcheon and yieldably urged thereagainst by an expansile spring 14 coiled about the reduced end portion 8 of the handle shank and confined between the washer and a nut or collar 15 threaded on the shank or end 8. The washer 13 is preferably concave and fits within a counterbore or recess 16 on the inner face of the escutcheon.
The main shank portion 9 of the handle is cen- 85 trally bored, as at 17, and forms the mounting head for a lock cylinder 18 having a conventional key receiving opening, not shown, and tumblers 19 adapted to be projected beyond the periphery of the cylinder when the key 20 is withdrawn with 90 the cylinder in either of two positions with the tumblers registering with longitudinal slots 21 communicating with the bore 17. The cylinder has a ange 22 on its outer end for appearances sake and to limit its movement into the bore 17 95 and the inner end of the cylinder has a reduced concentric extension 23 journaled in a smaller bore 24 concentric with the bore 17 and communicating with a transverse opening 25 in the end portion 8 of the shank and adapted to reg- 100 ister with the locking recesses 7 when the shank is in locked position.
A locking bolt 26 is slidably mounted in the' transverse opening 25 and is normally adapted to have its ends within the periphery of the shank 8 to free the handle for rotation but when the cylinder 18 is rotated to one of its two limits of movements, the locking bolt is adapted to be projected beyond the periphery of the shank end 8 into one locking recess 'I to thus secure the 110 handle against rotation. The control of the bolt from the cylinder is effected byan eccentric pin 27 projected from the inner end of the cylinder projection 23 to lie within the transverse opening 25 and engaged in a transverse slot 28 in the locking bolt so that rotation of the cylinder in one direction moves the bolt to locking position and rotation in a reverse direction `retracts the same.
The transverse slot 28 of the locking bolt ls of substantially T shape having inwardly extended flanges 29 along its marginal edges behind which the sharp shoulder 30 of a tapered or conical shaped head 31 on the outer end of the eccentric pin 27 engages to thus hold theV lock cylinder within its bore, as will be readily apparent. The innermost side and ange of the slot 28 is formed in part by a movable segment 32 transversely slidable in a cut-out portion 33 of the locking bolt and has its flange 34 tapered for the purpose later described.
The segment 32 is at all times yieldably urged to the position illustrated in Figure 4, to form a continuation of the transverse slot 28, by an expansile spring 35 confined in a well or bore 36 in the segment and abutting the wall 37 at the outer end of the cut away portion 33. In assembling the lock, the key 20 is inserted in the cylinder 18 to hold the tumblers 19 in place and in retracted position, the cylinder being then inserted in the bore 17 and rotated until the eccentric pin registers with the segment 32 when a slight inward pressure thereon causes the segment to give against its spring 35 by reason or the co-acting tapered head 31 and the tapered external surface of the ange 34. The segment 32 forms that portion of the end of the slot 28 in which the eccentric pin 27 is disposed only when the, cylinder is in an intermediate position and the pin 27 is in the other end of slot 28 when in either locking or unlocking position, at
which points the tumblers 19 register with the slots 21 so that the key 20 may be withdrawn.
When it is desired to remove the cylinder 18, for any purpose whatsoever such as repairs or the like, the handle assembly is removed from the door, not shown, which may be readily accomplished by a mechanic having the proper key, so that the door may be opened to permit removal of the set screw or other means, not shown, securing the assembly in position. A tool 37 is then inserted in the locking recess 7 through an aperture 38 in the washer 13 and the cylinder 18 rof tated to an intermediate position to position the eccentric pin 27 in that portion of the slot 28 of which the segment 32 forms a part. Pressure is then applied to the locking bolt by the tool 37 in the manner illustrated in Figure 2 to hold the same against outward movement when a pull is exerted on the key 20, the tapered end of the surface of the ange 34 permitting the head 31 to move the segment 32 against the spring 35, effecting the removal of the cylinder, as will be readily apparent.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which an invention of the character described apertains, that I provide a novel and improved lock structure in which the lock cylinder is held in position by a cooperating connection between the locking bolt and the cylinder eccentric pin and that the lock cylinder may be readily inserted in the lock or removed therefrom without in any wise injuring or damaging the same.
What I claim as my. invention is:
1. In a lock device, a bored mounting head, a lock cylinder mounted therein, a locking bolt adapted to be actuated by the lock cylinder, and a connection between the locking bolt and cylinder to secure the cylinder in the mounting head.
2. In a lock device including a rotatably mounted locking cylinder adapted to be key actuated to different denite positions, a locking member operated from the cylinder and having an approximately T shaped slot therein, an actuating pin extended from the cylinder into the locking member slot, and a head on the end of said pin and engageable behind the shoulders of the T shaped slot to normally restrain movement apart oi the cylinder and locking member.
3. In a lock device including a rotatably mounted locking cylinder adapted to be key actuated to diierent definite positions, a locking member operated from the cylinder and having an approximately T shaped slot therein, an actuating pin extended from the cylinder into the locking member recess, a head on the end oi" said pin and engageable behind the shoulders of the T shaped slot to normally restrain movement apart of the cylinder and locking member, and a yieldable wall portion forming a part of said locking member slot with which the head of the cylinder pin is engaged when the cylinder is in an intermediate position whereby detachment of the cylinder pin head from the locking member slot may be eected.
4. In a lock device, a rotatable member, a mounting member for the rotatable member and into which the first member projects, a lock cylinder journaled in the rst member and having its inner end communicating with a transverse slot therein adapted to register with a locking recess in the second member when the iirst member is in one position, a locking bolt slidably mounted in the transverse slot and adapted to be projected into the recess of the second member, an eccentric pin extended from the lock cylinder for engagement with the locking bolt whereby rotation of the lock cylinder reciprocates the bolt to project the same into and out of the second member recess, and cooperating means between the locking bolt and cylinder for securing the cylinder against axial movement in the mounting member.
5. In a lock device, a rotatable member, a mounting member for the rotatable member and into which the rst member projects, a lock cylinder journaled in the first member and having its inner endy communicating with a transverse slot adapted to register with a locking recess in 13( the second member when the first member is in one position, a locking bolt slidablyv mounted in said transverse slot and adapted to be projected into the recess of the second member, an eccentric pin extended from the lock cylinder for en- 13; gagement with the locking bolt whereby rotation of the lock cylinder reciprocates the bolt to project the same into and out of the second member recess, cooperating means between the locking bolt and cylinder for securing the cylinder against ax- 14, ial movement in the mountingA member, and means operable with the lock cylinder in an intermediate position to permit its axial movement from the rst member.
6. In a lock device, a locking bolt having a 14 transverse slot therein for the reception of an actuating member, llanges directed inwardly to lie over the slot, and a yieldable section forming a part of one of said flanges.
7. In a lock device, a locking bolt of substantially rectangular form having a transverse, substantially T shaped slot in one side, the bolt being cut away in communication with one side of the transverse slot, a segment of less length than the length of said cut away portion and disposed therein to form a continuation oi' the adjacent side of the transverse slot, a ange extended irom said segment to form a continuation of the adjacent flange extended over the slot to impart a T shape thereto, and means yieldably resisting movement of the segment from said slot.
8. In a lock device, a mounting member, an operating member rotatable in the mounting member and having a central bore and a transverse opening at the inner end of its bore adapted to register with a locking recess in themounting member when the rotatable member is in locking position, a locking bolt reciprocally mounted in the transverse opening and having a substantially T shaped transverse slot in its face registering with said bore, one portion of the wall and over-hanging iange of said transverse slot being yieldable to increase the space between said over-hanging anges, a locking cylinder rotatable in the bore of the rotatable member, an eccentric pin projected from the cylinder into the transverse slot of the locking bolt, and a head on the outer end'of said locking pin disposed within the wider portion of said transverse slot to normally restrain movement of the cylinder outwardly of the rotatable member, said eccentric pin head registering with the yielding wall portion of said T shaped slot when the cylinder is in an intermediate position.
9. In a lock device, a mounting member, an operating member rotatable in the mounting member and having a central bore and a transverse opening at the inner end of its bore adapted to register with a locking recess in the mounting member when the rotatable member is in locking position, a locking bolt reciprocally mounted in the transverse opening and having a substantially T shaped transverse slot in its face registering with said bore, one portion of .the wall and over-hanging flange of said transverse slot being yieldable to increase the space between said over-hanging flanges, al locking cylinder rotatable in the bore of the rotatable member, an eccentric pin projected vfrom the cylinder into the transverse slot of the locking bolt, a head on the outer end of said locking pin disposed within the wider portion of said transverse slot to normally restrain movement of the cylinder outwardly of the rotatable member, said eccentric pin head registering with the yielding wall portion of said T shaped slot when the cylinder is in an intermediate position, and means permitting the engagement of a tool with the locking bolt to hold the same against movement when the locking cylinder is moved to said intermediate position and an outward pull exerted thereon to facilitate the disengagement of the cylinder from the rotatable member.
10. In a lock device, a mounting member, a lock cylinder movable in the mounting member, a locking member, a connection between the lock cylinder and the locking member whereby movement is imparted to the locking member by the lockA cylinder, means whereby the locking member maintains the lock cylinder assembled with the mounting member, and means permitting disengagement of the lock cylinder from the mounting member when the cylinder and the 3 locking member are in predetermined relative positions.

A lock device, comprising a mounting member, a lock cylinder mounted therein, a locking member, and a connection between the lock cylinder and the locking member whereby movement may be imparted to the locking member by the lock cylinder, said connection between the lock cylinder and the locking member preventing disengagement ot the lock cylinder from the mounting member, a part o1' said connection between the lock cylinder and locking member being yieldable to permit the disengagement of the lock cylinder from'the mounting member when the lock cylinder and locking member are in predetermined relative positions.
12. In a lock device, a mounting member having a transverse slot, a lock cylinder movable in the mounting member, a locking member movable in the transverse slot, means whereby movement may be imparted to the locking member by the lock cylinder, the locking member having a recess therein, means carried by the lock cylinder and engaged in said recess, means normally preventing disengagement of the lock cylinder carried means from the recess to maintain the lock cylinder assembled with the mounting member, and means whereby the lock cylinder carried part may be disengaged from said recess when the lock cylinder and the locking member are in predetermined relative positions.
13. In a lock device, a mounting member, a lock cylinder mounted therein, the mounting member having a transverse slot, a locking member movable in said slot, the locking member having a groove, means carried by the lock cylinder and engageable in said groove whereby movement may be imparted to the locking member by the lock cylinder and whereby detachment of the lock cylinder from the mounting member is prevented, a yieldable portion carried by the locking member and forming one wall of said groove to permit the disengagement of the lock cylinder carried part from the groove when the lock cylinder and the locking member are in predetermined relative positions.
14. In a lock device, a mounting member having a transverse slot, a lock cylinder positioned in the mounting member, locking member movable in the transverse slot, a part carried by the lock cylinder and engageable in a. groove formed in the locking member whereby movement may be imparted to the locking member by the lock cylinder, said engagement o1' the lock cylinder carried part in the groove preventing disengagement of the lock cylinder from the mounting member, means yieldably urging the locking member to a position engaging one wall of its groove with the lock cylinder carried part, and a yieldable member carried by the locking member and forming a part of the opposite wall of the groove, whereby said lock cylinder carried part may be removed from the groove to permit disengagement of the lock cylinder from the mounting member when the locking member is moved against its urging means to a position at which the lock cylinder carried part engages said yieldable member.
15. In a lock device, a mounting member, a lock cylinder mounted therein, a cylinder actuated locking member, me'ans to actuate the locking member from the lobk cylinder, and a connection between the locking member and the lock cylinder to removably retain the lock cylinder assembled with the mounting member.
16. In a lock device, a mounting member having a transverse slot, a lock cylinder movable in the mounting member, a locking member movable in the slot, means whereby the movements of the lock cylinder and the locking member are coordinated, means whereby the locking member maintains the lock cylinder assembled with the mounting member, and means carried by the locking member and operable to permit the lock cylinder to be disengaged from the mounting member.
17. In a lock device, a bored mounting head, a locking cylinder mounted therein, a locking bolt mounted for movement in a direction transverse to the axis of said lock cylinder, means on said locking cylinder to actuate said locking bolt and means on said bolt cooperating with means on said cylinder to secure the cylinder in the mounting head.
18. In a lock device including a rotatably mounted locking cylinder adapted to be keyactuated to different definite positions, a locking member mounted for reciprocable movement in a. direction transverse to the axis of said cylinder, said locking member having an approximately T-shaped slot therein, an actuating pin extending from the cylinder into the locking member slot, and a head on the end of said pin engageable behind the shoulders of said T-shaped slot to normally restrain movement of the cylinder away from the locking member.
19. In a. lock device, a mounting member, a locking cylinder mounted therein, a locking member mounted for movement transverse to the axis of said locking cylinder, means mounted on said locking cylinder to actuate said locking member and means on the locking member cooperating with means on said last named means to retain said locking cylinder assembled with the mounting member.
20. In a lock device, a mounting member, a key operable lock cylinder movable in the mounting member to and from a locked position in the performance of its normal locking functions, a cylinder actuated locking member, means to actuate the locking member from the lock cylinder, and a connection between the locking member and the lock cylinder to releasably secure the lock cylinder in the mounting member, said connection being releasable to enable removal of the lock cylinder only after the lock cylinder has been moved a predetermined distance from its locked position.
21. In a lock structure including a mounting head, a key operable lock cylinder mounted therein, a locking bolt operable upon actuation of the lock cylinder, and means including the locking bolt for removably securing the lock cylinder in the mounting head.
