LocK AND LATCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April l, 1914. Serial No. 828,675.
State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks and Latches, of which the follow ng is a specification.
This invention relates to looks, and par-:
ticularly to the class commonly known as combined lock and latch construction, in
which the latch bolt is retracted from at least one side of the door by means of a thumb latch lever, instead of by the door knob from both sides,
The object in the present construction is to provide a lock in which the locking bolt is retracted orprojected from the inside by means of a thumb knob and from the outside by a key only; and in which the latch bolt is operated from the inside by the usual door knob, but from the outside by a thumb latch lever; and a further object is to provide for retracting the latch bolt by means of the key from the outside, even though the latch lever actuation vis locked by the lock stop usually provided in looks of this character. I I
A further object in the present construction is to provide means for preventing the locking in of the key. This locking in of the key occurs in ordinary locks if, at the time the key is inserted and turned to retract the locking bolt, the turn knob is operated from the inside at the same time. In order to prevent this locking in of the key, I provide a lever, pivotedvin the casing in position to be actuated in one direction only, by the locking bolt, a spring being provided to move it in the opposite direction, thus leaving it free to be moved by the key bit against the tension of said spring, thus relieving the key from its engagement in the lock and permitting its withdrawal.
The invention is more fully described in the following specification and clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which represents my lock in elevational view, with the outside casing plate removed and with the locking bolt in retracted position.
In the drawing: The numeral 1 designates the casing; 2 the locking bolt; 8 the latch bolt; 4 the turn knob hub for actuating the locking bolt; 5 the door knob hub for retracting the latch bolt; 6 the thumb latch lever; 7 the latch bolt retracting lever; and 8 the lock stop mechanism for locking the thumb latch lever. described are of the usual or ordinary con struction, and the locking bolt is provided with the usual tumbler or tumblers 10.
Patented July 28, 1914.
All of the parts above.
It will be noted that while the locking bolt may be actuated from the inside by the turn knob-and its hub, it may also be operated from the outside by the use of a key, through the usual key opening 11.
Inside the casing, immediately below the locking bolt 2, is pivotally mounted a lever 12, in such position that it will be depressed when the bolt is projected, by the contacting act-ion of the lug 13 thereon with a shoulder 14. on the lever.- This lever is provided with or backed by a spring 15, which tends to normally raise the lever. In this respect, this lever differs from that usually employed, in thatitis operated in a downward direction only by the action of the bolt, whereas heretofore, the bolt has been provided with a second lug adapted to raise the lever when the bolt was retracted. With, this last named construction, it frequently happened. that when the key was inserted from the outside and turned, the thumb knob was turned on the inside by another person, and this act-ion would hold the lever 12 against movement, and inasmuch as the key bit engages the end of the lever in its path, the key would be locked in the lock and could not be removed without taking the casing apart. In the present a turned, as the key bit will merely depressthe free end of the lever 12 and be allowed to complete its cycle. The spring tends to keep the lever normally in proper position with relation to the locking boltunless thus moved by the key. It will be noted also, that even though the latch lever is locked against movement by the lock stop device 8, the actuation of both the locking bolt and the latch bolt may be effected from the outside through the medium of the key, so that while the latch is ineffective to all users of the latch lever, it will be at all times effective to those provided with the key. This actuation of the latch bolt through the mediuin of thekey operated. means, is accomplished by a second lever 16, pivoted to the casing, one end of which is engaged by the pivoted lever 12 while the other end engages a suitable pin or projection 17 on the latch bolt, so that, after the locking bolt has been retracted by the key, a second turn of the key will raise the lever 12 and cause it to turn the lever 16 which will retract the latch bolt.
