retracted position, and a cylinder lock meeh- .anism'at the .inside of` the door which will retract the latch bolt then dog itin retracted position.
My present improvements relate to a lock in which the cylinder lock mechn ism' at the inside of the room is inoperative to retract the latch bolt, but is, nevertheless, fully cperative to dog the bolt in retracted position, after it has been retracted' by the knob,
thumb-piece, or other manual rctracting means at the inside of the door. Hence in order to dog the latch bolt' inretracted position, the inside knob, or other retracting member, is manipulated to 'withdraw the.
bolt, and whilethe latter is held in retracted position a key is inserted into the lock from the inside of the door and rotated to dog the bolt in its retracted position, after which the Lknob or other reti-acting member may be released without releasing the bolt. V

The means-for retracting the latch holt by meansI of a key from the'outside of the door comprisesfaretracting lever 20, pivoted in thev case at' 21, 'and having one extremity 221 thereof'engaged with the crosshead 15 of the bolt. A cylinder lock 22,- secured in an opening in the case at" the outside of the' door, is provided with a bit, dog or roll@ back 23, adapted to engage the free end' 24 off a lever 25, pivoted in the case at 26, which tree end'24 loosely rests on and'is supported by a lateral projection 27`on the upper en'd of the level' 20. Thus, when the rollback 23 is rotated in a counter-clockwise direction with respect to Fig. 1, it` will depress the lever 25 and swing the lever 20 to retract the latch bolt, as' shown in' Fig. 2. y
The cylinder lock mechanism at" the inside of' thedoor for doggingthe` latch boltv in retracted position comprises a cylinder lock 28, secured in an opening/in the case at the insidev ofE the door, and provided with a rollback 29'. This rollback 29 coperates with -a detent lever 30, pivoted in the case at 31', and having an arm 32 adaptedl to be contacted at its upper extremity by the rollback 29 for thepurpose of dogging andv i releasing' the bolt. When it is desired to hold the bolt back in t e case so that the door may be freely opened. merely by pushing or pulling the same, the inside thumb-piece or crossbar 18, or its equivalent, is operated to retract the bolt, as shown by the dotted lines in Fig. 3. The key for the cylinder 2S is then inserted into said cylinder and rotated to actuate the rollback 29 in such a manner as to move the detent lever 30 from the position shown in Fig. l to the position shown in Fig. The rollback 29 contacts With one face of the upper extremity et' the arm 32, and moves the arm 33 down in front of the cross-head l5, thereby clogging the bolt in retracted position. When' it is da sired to release the bolt, thelrey is turned to reverse the movement o'- the rollback 29, which will then contact with the opposite side of ,the arm 32 and move said arm in the opposite direction to release the bolt.
It will be apparent that the detent lever 30 is entirely independent o't the retracting f lever 20, for which reason the inside cynn= der lock is inoperative to retract tno latch bolt. ln fact, the dctent lever is blocked against movement when the latch bolt is in the normal projected position, because at this time the crosshead .l5 will be in line with the lug 34, as shown in Fig. l, and upon attempting' to turn the lever in a'cloclr- Wise direction the lug' Set will abut the crosshead 15, and the detent lever will be thereby blocked against any appreciable move` ment. However, as soon as the latch boltv has been retracted by the manual retracting' means at the inside of the door, the detent lever 30 may be readily moved into its operative position by the lrey at the inside olf the door.
l have not attempted to illustrate 'the usual pin tumblers with which the cylinder locks 22 and 28 are provided. It desired, these tivo cylinder loclrs may be actuated by the same key, but usually they will have dit ferent keys, and the janitor or proprietor will retain the key for the cylinder QS so that the latch bolt may not be dogged in retracted position by an unauthorized person. lt will be apparent that, it desired, the latch bolt'may be dogged in its retracted position after it has been pushed inward from the face of the lock instead ot retracted by the manual reti-acting,` moans at 'the inside ot the room, but usually will be preferable to employ this last named means because it does away with the neccssity ot opening the door for gaining' access to the bolt.
