To all 'whom t may concern Be it known that I, ALBERT A. PAGE, a citizen of the United States, residing in East I-Iaven, county of New Haven, and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to locks, and more particularly to latch bolt locks for schoolhouses and other buildings, having means operable by a key whereby the latch bolt may be dogged in its retracted position so that when desired the door may be opened merely by pushing or pulling the same.
One of the primary objects of the present invention is to provide a lock having a cylinder lock mechanism of the ordinary pin tumbler type, operable from one side of the door by at least two differenty keys, together with mechanism which will dog ythe latch bolt in retracted position when said cylinder lock is actuated by one of said keys, without so clogging it when said cylinder lock mech-V anism is actuated by the other key, which latter key will retract the bolt but will not cause it to be held back in the inoperative position. Thus this last named key may be used by the teachers, or otherrk persons to whom it is not desired to give control of the latch dogging mechanism, while the lirst key can be retained by the janitor, or other authorized person to whom it is desired to give such control. hood of the teachers key beingfso used as to leave the door in unlocked condition at a time when it should be locked againstin- Usually the janitors key will be operative to retract the latch bolt, as well as to dog it in the retracted position, but this is not necessary in all aspects of the invention. Another object of the invention is to provide a lock in which the latch bolt, after being dogged in retracted position by the master key, cannot be released by the change key. Tok these and other ends, the invention consists in the novel features and combinations of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed.

section similar to Fig. 3, showing the janitors key inserted into the cylinder lock; Fig. 6 is a fragmentary view of the lock mechanism showing how the teachers key isinoperative to release the latch bolt from its dogged position; and Fig. 7 comprises an edge view of the main retracting leverand a face view thereof.
Referring to the drawings, the case 10kk of the lockV having the face plate 11 contains a latch bolt 12 normally projected by a spring 13. The stem 111 of the bolt carries a head 15 engaged by a lever 16 adapted to be operated `by a lifter 17, which is in turn actuated by an inside thumb piece, push bar, or other mechanism (not shown). The particular means for retracting the latch bolt manually from the inside of the door is immaterial. In the particular lock selected for illustration, the retraction of the bolt from the outside of the door is confined to the key, but this is likewise an immaterial featureso far as this invention is concerned.

The teachers key, or change key 39, is adapted to rotate the key plug 34 and sleeve 35 together, and' consequently it rotates both rollbacks 27 and 29 at the same time. These rollbacks in this case both rotate about the axis` of the sleeve, as will be understood. When the rollbacks are rotated in a counterclockwise direction with reference to Fig. l, the latch. bolt will be retracted by means olE the levers y 31 and 20, as Vhereinbefore described, without affecting the detent lever 25, so that as a consequence the teachers key is inoperative tov hold the latch bolt retracted by meansof said detent lever. I have not attempted to describe all of the modifications of the construction which may be adopted Within the scope of the invention as defined in the claims.
I do not claim herein the specilic means for retracting the latch bolt from one side oi' the door by means of a key acting on a detent member, as set forth in my co-pending application, Serial No. 710,570; nor do I cla-im broadly herein a lock having a latch bolt, a retracting member therefor, a detent member for dogging the bolt in retracted position, a key to operate both ot said members, and a key to operate the retracting member alone, as claimed in another copending application Serial No. 804,215.
`What I claimis 1. In a lock, a latch bolt, retracting mechanism therefor, detent mechanism for dogging the bolt in retracted position, a cylinder lock at one side of the door, a key for said cylinder lock adapted to retract the latch bolt and dog it in retracted position, and another key for said cylinder lock operative to retract the latch bolt but inoperative to dog it in retracted position; substantially as described.

In a lock, the combination of a latch bolt, a cylinder lock, tvvo rollbacks carried by said cylinder lock and forming permanent parts thereof, means operable by one of said rollbacks to' dog the latch bolt in retracted position, and means operableby the other rollback to retract the bolt Without clogging it in retracted position; substantially as described.
V6. In a lock, the combination of a latch bolt, a cylinder lock, two rollbacks carried by said cylinder lock, means actuated by one of said rollbacks to retract the bolt, and means actuated by the other rollback to dog the bolt in retracted position; substantially as described.

In a lock, the combination of a case, a latch bolt therein, a cylinder lock secured to the case at the outside of the door, tWo rollbacks carried by said cylinder lock Within the case, means actuated by one of said rollbacks to retract the bolt and dog it in retracted position, and means actuated by the other rollback to retract the bolt Without dogging it in retracted position; substantially as described.

In a lock, a latch bolt, a cylinder lock, a plurality of keys adapted to said cylinder lock, and mechanism operable by one of said keys to retract the bolt and hold it retracted, and operable in part by another of said keys to retract the bolt Without holding it retracted; substantially as described.

In a lock, a latch bolt, retracting mechanism therefor, detent mechanism for dogging the bolt in retracted position, a cylinder lock, a key for said cylinder lock operative on both of said mechanisms, and another and dil'erent key for said cylinder lock operative on said retracting mechanism alone; substantially as described.
10. In a lock, a latch bolt, retracting mechanism therefor, mechanism for dogging the bolt in retracted position, a cylinder lock having a key plug and a sleeve surrounding the key plug, a rollback actuated by the key plug, and a rollback actuated by the sleeve, one of said rollbacks operative on both the retracting mechanism and the clogging mechanism, and the other rollback operable on the retracting mechanism alone; substantially as described.

In a lock, a latch bolt, retracting mechanism therefor, mechanism for clogging the bolt in retracted position, a rollback to actuate the dogging mechanism, and a rollback to actuate the retracting mechanism, in combination with a cylinder lock having a key plug mounting one .of said rollbacks, and provided with a sleeve surrounding the key plug and mounting the other rollback; substantially as described.

In a lock, a latch bolt, a retracting lever therefor, and a detent lever adapted to'operate the retracting lever, in combination With a cylinder lock having a rollback to operate said levers together, and another rollback to operate the retracting lever independently; substantially as described` 13. Ina lock, the .combination of a latch bolt, pin tumblerV lock mechanism, a pluralityof keys adapted to said pin tumbler lock mechanism, and mechanism operable by one of said keys toV retract the latch bolt and dog it in retracted position, said 4mechanism being operative by another of said keys tor the extent of retracting the bolt, but inoperative by said second key to dog the bolt in tumbler lock mechanism, a key operative on retracted position, said second key beingY also inoperative to release the bolt from v its dogged position; substantially as described.
