The objectof the invention is to improve the construction and mode of operation of locks of this character as will hereinafter appear. i A more specific object of the invention is to provide a lock of-th'e type employing a night-latch, with means whereby when the night-latch is once set to blockthe outer knob it cannotbe released again without the use of a master key or a key other than the pass key. The lock isillustrated in Fig. 6 of the drawings as being mounted in a door 2 having a door casing 4.- which is provided with a, striker or latch plate 6. The lock is pro vided with a casing 8 having a face plate 10 and a cover or cap-plate 12. The lock mechanism comprises a spring projected latch bolt l-having a head 16, a stem 18 The lock mechanism is also provided with a locking cylinder 22 in which is mounted a key plug 24 and downwardly spring pressed pin tumblers 26. The inner endof the key plug 24 ca ries a cam or roll-back arm 28, which, when the proper key is inserted in the plug and the plug is turned, may act on the tail-piece 20 to retract the latch bolt 14:. A dead locking mechanism is provided for the latch bolt, which mechanism comprises a lever 30 pivotally mounted on a pin 32 secured to the casing, which is urged in a clockwise direction, viewing Fig. 6, by a spring 34. The dead locking lever 30 is provided with an arm 86 which when the door is locked closed, is positioned adjacent the back of the head 16 of the latch bolt so as to serve as an abutment to prevent the latch bolt from being forced back. In order that the dead locking lever 30 shall not interfere with theretractio'n of the latchbolt when the roll-back arm 28 is operated, a lever 38 is interposed between the dead locking lever 30and the roll-back arm 28 of the cylinder lock and is so arranged that when the roll back arm is actuated to retract the latch bolt thearm will act through the lever 38 totilt the dead locking'lever30 out ofthe path ofmovement of the head ofthelat ch bolt and thiswill occur just before the roll-.
back arm engages the tail-piece of the bolt to retract the bolt. The actuating lever 38 is pivotally mounted on a stud 40 secured to the lock case and is provided with a shouldered projection, 42 adapted to be ongaged by the roll-back arm of the cylinder lock, and with a projection 44 engaging a cam surface 46 on an upwardly extending arm 48 of the dead locking lever 30. The lever 38 is urged in a clockwise directionby the spring 34 having its rear end secured to the lever. When the door is open the dead locking lever 30 is heldout'of the path of movement oflthe head of the latch bolt by the engagement of the upright arm 48 of the lever with a downwardly projecting lug-5O on an outwardly spring pressed auxiliary latch bolt '52. When the door is closed the auxiliary latch bolt 52, is retracted by the engagement of the forward end thereofjwith the latch plate 6 of"thedoorucasing so as to enable the dead locking leveiw30 tobe returned by its spring into efiectivefpositionbehind the head of the latch bolt.
The lock, is also provided. with the usual independent knob spindles for independent operation of the l'atchbolt, by meansof the outer and inner knobs (not'shown) respectively. The outerknob spindle istadapted to operate a rollback54 to swing a rollback lever 56 rearwardly which causes the upper end of the lever 56 to act on the tailpiece 20 to retract thebolt. The inner knob spindle is connected with a roll-back 58 lying immediately beneath the roll-back 54 and is also adapted to operate the latch operatinglever 56 to retractthe latch bolt. A night latch is provided for blockingthe roll-back 54 and, consequently, the outer knob against operation.l,'1his nightlatch comprises two press pins 59 and 60 thatare connected to operate simultaneously in opposite directions by means of a walking beam 62. The inner end of the press pin 59 is provided witha dog 64-adaptcd to engage a notch 66 in the froll-back54 when the press pin 59 isdepres'sedand tobe'released therefrom when the 3 pin 60 is depressed. v i
Except ashereinafte'r described, the parts abovereferred to of the lock mechanism are substantially of a wellknown construction. The construction is such, however, that a person may at any time open the door from the inside by means of the inner knob and from theoutside by means of the. pass key. As shown, the night latch pin 59 is provided with an upstanding lug 68,.which when the night latch is setvto block. the outer knob, is positionedback of the end of a rearwardly projecting lug 70 on the dead locking lever 30. The lugs 68 and "('0 correspond to said cooperating lugs ofsaid prior construction above described except that in the present construction the upstanding lugs 68 is of sufiicientlength so that the lug70 will not be carriedout of engagement with the lug 68 when the dead locking lever 30 is tilted by the action of the roll-back 28 during'the unlocking of the door by the pass key or by the auxiliary latch bolt52 when the door is open. To enable the night latch to be released from the roll-back 54 the dead locking lever 30 must be tilted a sufiicient vdistance to disengage the lugs '68 "and 70 and this is accomplished by means of a cam or roll-back arm 72 on the cylinder ,l ock which is of sufficient. length to act through the lever 38 to tilt the dead locking lever 30 the required distance. As shown the roll-back arm 72is only capable of being operated bymeans of amaster key 74. To provide for this the roll-back arm 172 i'ssecu'red to the inner end of a sleeve 76 surroundingthe keyphig 24 and thepin tumblers "26 are suchthat when the pass key is lnserted in the lockand, turned the sleeve '76 i'slield stationary. and when the master key isinserted in the lock and turned the sleeve 76 turns with the keyplug 24.
,, In the construction illustrated in Fig. 6 of the-drawings when'the'master key is used the roll-backarm 72 first engages the actuating lever 38- to "release-the dea'd locking 1 ,aemss lever 30 from the latch bolt and night latch and while the roll-backis in engagement with the lever 38 it engages the tail-piece oi the latch bolt to retract the bolt, but during the continued movement of the roll back 72 to complete the retraction of the latch bolt the roll-back passes by the shouldered projection 42 of the actuating lever 38, so that with this construction it is necessary "alter the door is opened to turn the roll-back 72 back into engagement with the shouldered projection 42 before the night latch can be released. In the construction illustrated in Fig. 7, however, the circumit'erential length of the end oi? the rollback 72 is suliicient to cause it to remain in engagement witl the lug 4-2 during the complete retraction of the latch bolt and, hence, with this construction the night latch may be released while the roll-back arm 72' is held at the limit of its etl'ective movement.
It may be noted that when the night latch has been released the lug 68 is positioned beneath the lug 70 so that when in thisposition, the lug 68 by engagement with the underside of the lug 70 prevents the dead lockinc; lever 30 from being turned by its spring into position to dead lock the latch bolt and that the night latch, when released or in cit position, can be moved to on position without the use of the master key.
While it is preferred to employ the specific construction and arrangement of parts illustrated and described, it is to be understood that this construction and arrangement is not essential except so far as specified in the claims and may be changed or modified withoutdeparting from the broader features of the invention.
That I claim is l. A lock of the class described having, in combination, a latch bolt, a knob operable device for retracting the bolt, controllable mechanism for rendering said device operative and inoperative, dead locking means for preventing effective operation of said mechanism when said device has been rendered inoperative thereby, and means operable by one of a plurality of keys to retract the latch bolt without releasing said dead locking means from. said mechanism and operable by another of the keys to both retract the latch bolt and to release said dead looking means from said mechanism.

A look of the class described having, in combination, a latch bolt, a knob operable device 'for retracting the bolt, controllable mechanism for rendering said device operative and inoperative, dead locking means for preventing effective operation of said mechanism when said device has been rendered inoperative thereby and for preventing retraction of the latch bolt when the door is closed, and means operable by one of a plurality of keys to release said dead lock ing means from the latch bolt without releasinp- 1t from said mechanism and operable by another key to release the dead look ing means from both the latch bolt and said mechanism. a

6. A lock of the class described having, in combination, a lockcase havinga face-plate, a latch bolt extending through the faceplate, a knob operable device for retracting the latch bolt, a night latch for rendering said device operative and inoperative comprising an operating pin extending through the lace-plate, means for blocking said night latch when said device has been rendered inoperative, and means capable of being op erated from the exterior of a side of the lock case either to release said blocking means from the night latch and retract the latch bolt, orto retract the latch bolt without releasing said blocking means from the night latch.
7. A look of the class described having, in combination, a latch bolt, a knob operable device for retracting the bolt, controllable mechanism for rendering said device operative and inoperative, dead locking means for preventing effective operation of said mechanism when said device has been rendered inoperative, and key operated means under the control of the operator either to release said dead locking means from said mechanismand to retract the latch bolt, or to retract'the latch bolt without releasing said dead locking means from said mechanism.
8. A look of the class described having, in combination, a latch bolt, a knob operable device for retracting the bolt, controllable mechanism for rendering said device operative and inoperative, dead locking means for preventing effective operation of said mechanism when said device has been rendered inoperative, and means comprising *a key operated cam for retracting the latch bolt without releasirig the dead locking means from said mechanism, and a second key operated cam for releasing the dead locking means from said mechanism, said cams being operated by separate keys.
9. A lock of the class described having, in combination, a latch bolt, a knob operable device for retracting the bolt, controllable mechanism for rendering said device operative and inoperative, dead locking means for preventing retraction of the bolt when the door is closed and for preventing effective operation of said mechanism when said device is rendered inoperative thereby, and means operable by one of a plurality of keys for releasing the dead locking means from the latch bolt, for retracting the bolt and for releasing the dead locking means from said mechanism,vand operable by another of the keys to release the dead locking means from the latch bolt and to retract the latch bolt without releasing the dead locking means from said mechanism.

A look of the class described having, in combination, a latch bolt, a knob operable device for retracting the bolt, controllable mechanism for rendering said device op erative and inoperative, dead locking means for preventing retraction of the bolt When the door is closed and for preventing effe tive operation of said mechanism when said device is rendered inoperative thereby, means acting upon opening the door to re lease the dead locking means from the latch bolt Without releasing the dead locking means from said mechanism, and key operable means tor releasing the dead locking meansf-rom the latch bolt, for retracting the latch bolt and for releasing the dead look ing means from said mechanism.
