Be itknown that 1, CHARLES A. BERRY, of Stamford, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks; and
I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilledin the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

A further object is to provide a lock with means for deadlocking the outer knob, and also with antomaticall actuated means bolt and also the dead iocking mechaiiism of the outer knob. With these ends in view my -invention consists in the parts and combinations of parts, and in certain details of construction as will be more fully explained and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a View in section through a section of the door and inner case of the lock, the section taken in a plane above the knobs thim les. From the construction thus far described it will be seen that the inner knob aetuates roll back 7, the outer knob the roll back 11, and the key cylinder in the outer-knob, the roll back 10. Both knobs operate to retract the latch bolt through the medium of a tail niece 8 common to both. This tail piece is U-shape longitudinally, and is slotted at its rear end to embrace the hubs of the roll backs 7 and ll, the free ends of one member of the tail piece being bent outwardly toward the inner knob so as to engage the roll back 7, and the free ends of the other men her bent toward the outer knob and engag- 40 in; the roll back 11.

'ith this lock it will be seen that the bolt 5 is dead locked against movement by an instrument introduced between the front and strike plates, and that the deadlockingl mech-- anism of the outer knob, isalso (le: locked when thedoor is closed. It will also be seen, from the construction as above explained, that the lock case 6 carrying the roll backs and tail pieces, together with the outer knob 25 are all carried by the outside plate 17, while the inner plate 3 carries its knob and spindle, hence in order to apply the lock to a door it is simply necessary to cut out a section suiliciently large to accommodate the case 6 and front plate 4, the plates 3 and 17 overlapping and concealing the cut. ihe part-s previously assembled,
and adjusted are placed in their proper po-,
sitions, on opposite sides of the door, the only adjustments necessary being to seat the end of the spindle 1 in its roll back 7 and the flange 48 in roove 49. After the parts have been thus applied, they are secured by screws 53 passing through plate Iiand entering screw threaded sockets in plat 17 and by screws passing through plates 3 and 17 into the door. In locks of this kind. it is customary to extend the front loosely beyond the edge of the inside plate without any councction whatsoever.
By means of the groove 49 and flange 48, I connect the front which is carried bv one plate, to the other plate, thereby providing a much stronger front than in those locks in which there is no such connection.
As shown in Figs. 9 and 10 the throw of the bolt may be adjusted by providing the dog 19 with two holes for the pin 36. By changing the pin from the lower hole as in Fig. 10 to the upper hole as in Fig. 9 and turning tail piece 9 over so as to engage itsroll back 10, I secure a greater throw of the bolt.
Itis evident that many slight changes might be resorted to in the relative arrangementof parts shown and described wit out departing from the Hli and scope of my invention. Hence I would have it anderstood that I do not wish to confine myself to the exact construction of parts shown and described but consider myself at liberty to make such slight changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of mgfiuvention. i
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patcnt, is
1.111 a lock the combination with an cscutcheon plate, a latch bolt carried thereby, a casing secured to said plate and roll backs carried by said casing, of a'second escutcheon plate, a knob carried thereby and carrying a knob spindle removabl connected with one of said roll backs, a knob carried by the first mentioned escutcheon plate and engaging another roll back, and a latch slideconnecting the latch bolt and rpll backs and supported by said bolt and roll backs, substantially as setforth.
2. In a lock, the combination with a late carrying a bolt, a casing in rear 0 the plate and adapted to rest in a slot in the door, a series of roll backs within the casing, a knob connected with one of said roll backs, means connecting the roll backs and bolt, 9. key lock carried by said knob and connected with another roll back,'means for deadlocking the knob and means carried by the .Casing and actuated by the closing of the door for deadlocking said knob deadlocking means.
3. In a lock the combination of twoside plates one of which is .provided with an end or face plate, a'swinging bolt carried by said end or face plate, a knob carried by one side plate, a casing intermediate the two side plates and secured to and carried by one of said plates, the said casing carrying a roll back and bolt actuating means, means for deadlocking said knob, and means carried by the casin and actuated by the closing of the door or deadlocking the knob dead locking means.
4. In a lock the combination with a carrying frame and a hinged bolt, of a dead locking dog carried by the bolt, and means actuated by the closing of the door for engaging said do and deudlocking the bolt.
In a lock, t e combination with a carrying frame. a hinged bolt, :1 deadlocking dog pivoted to said boltand bolt retracting means connected to said dog, of means actuits atcd by the closing of the door for engaging dog and deadlooking the bolt when the dog is in its normal position,
7. In a lock the combination with a hollow knob having an open front, a sleeve nut within the knob and a nut for locking said sleeve nut against displacement, of a lock l cylinder en aged by said sleeve nut, the outer end of said cylinder closing the open front of the knob, and having an enlargement resting against a seat on the knob whereby the lock cylinder is prevented from rotating.
8. The combination with a plate, a thimble carried thereby, a knob shank mounted in the thimble and passing through the plate and a split rin engaging a recess in the knob shank and bearing against the rear face of the plate, the inner end of the knob shank having teeth or projections, of a roll back engaged by said teeth or projection on the shank, a bolt and means connecting the roll back and bolt.
9. In a lock the combination with three roll backs and a bolt, of a tail piece connecting; the bol and intermediate roll back, and a U-shapcd tail piece engaging the outside roll backs and a shoulder on the first mcntinned tail piece.
10. In a lock the combination with two independent knobs, a key lock in one of said knobs, three roll backs two of which are coupled up to the knobs, and one-to the lock mechanism in the knob, of a bolt, a tail piece connecting the latter with the intermediate roll back, and a U-shaped tail piece connected to the outer roll backs and engag ing a shoulder on the first. mentioned tail piece.
11. In a lock, the combination with a pivoted bolt, and a pivoted bell crank shaped dog on said bolt, the dog having a plurality of holes therein, of a pin adapted to be secured in any one ofsaid holes, a tail piece connected to the pin and a roll back for actuating the tail piece.
12. In a lock, the combination with two removable side plates and a latch bolt, of three roll backs su ported in a frame intermediate the two side plates, a knob attached to and carried by each side plate. each knob having detachable connection with the roll back adjacent thereto, and key mechanism having detachable connection with the intel-mediate roll back.
13. In a lock, the combination with two side plates and intermediate casing carrying three roll backs, of a knob attached to and carried by each side plate. the two knobs located in line with said roll backs. each knob havin detachable connection with the roll back adjacent thereto, and a key mechanism carried by one knob and connected with the middle roll back.
14. In a lock, the combination with a bolt, means for actuating same and a movable slop adapted to be moved to its operative position by the closingof the door, of a movable dtmdlocking dog, carried by the bolt and (tunne -ted to the bolt. actuating means, whereby when the bolt is actuated the deadlocking dog will be disengaged from the movable stop.

In a lock. the. combination with a bolt; and m ans for actuating same. of deadlocki 2;; means movably mounted on the bolt, a movable stop for said deadlocking means, the said stop being moved 0 operative position b the closine of the docrfaud means for moving aio dcadlocking means out of the path of the movable stop when the latch is actuated by the latch operating devices. i

In a lock, the combination with a latch-bolt and mechanism for retracting the bolt, of a shde for dead-locking said mechanism, a single means for automatically deaddoehing both the slides and latch-bolt, and an actuator projecting outside of the lock and arranged to engage. the door casing, when the door is closed.
19. In a lock, a latch-l'iolt, means for retracting the same, stop-work arranged to engage said latch-bolt operating mechanism, and a dog comprising a movable plate a ranged to automatically block said stonwork and latch-bolt simultaneously when the door closed.
20. in a lock, :1 latch-colt, a siide cooperatinp therewith to retract the same when the slide is retracted. means for retracting said slide, a stop-work mechanism for said slide retracting means, and single dogging device arran ed to block both the latch-bolt and the stop-work when the latter is in its operative position and the door is closed.
