. in looks, the object being to provide a lock with a plurality of bolts disposed at right angles to each other and engaging the keeper, so that when the door is locked the lock and keeper will be interlocked against the possibility of forcible separation by a jimmy or other tool introduced between the strike plate and the lock or betweenthe door and the jamb, and with this object in view my invention consists in the parts and combination of parts as will be more fully explained and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings; Figure 1 is a view in elevation of the lock and keeper applied to a door and jamb respectively; Fig. 2 is a view in rear elevation of the lock the cover plate being removed and showing the bolts 1n locking position; Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the bolts in their retracted positions; Fig. 4 is a View in longitudinal section of the lock taken through the center of the main bolt; Fig. 5 is a view of the main and auxiliary bolts removed and in their proper relative-positions and Fig. 6 is a view of the keeper.
10 represents a lock casing adapted to be secured to the inner face of a door 11 with its outer end projecting beyond the free edge of the door so as to overlap the door jamb when the door is closed.
Mounted for longitudinal movement in the casing 10 is the main bolt 12 the free end of which passes through the end plate 13 of the casing and enters the housing 14 in the keeper 15 which latter is secured to the door ,jamb 16. The main bolt 12 is pro inner end of the knob spindle or shank 17 is the arm 19 provided at its free end with a hole to receive the pin 20 on the slide block 21 which latter rests and moves within the groove 22 in the guide 23. This guide is secured to the bolt 12 adjacent one edge of the latter and projects beyond said edge and stated, connects the slide block 21 with the arm 19, also engages the bolt actuating plate 24-wh1ch is further secured to said slide 7 so the block 21 and the pin 20 which as above block 21 by a, screw. The bolt actuating 68 plate 24 above referred to is designed to be engaged by the key actuated mechanism of the look. It will therefore be seen that the knob spindle 17 has a pivotal connection through crank arm 19 with the bolt actuating plate 24 and the latter is connected with the bolt through the medium of the slide block 21 and guide 23. If the bolt 12 bein its retracted position as shown in Fig. 3, and the knob be turned, the slide block 21 acting in the guide 23 shifts the bolt 12 to its projected position. As the arm 19 is turned, it shifts the slide block 21 andbolt actuating plate toward the projecting end ofthe guide 23 and then lowers it to a position in front of the extension on plate 18, the said slide block and bolt actuating plate 24 moving in the" arc of a circle. When the bolt is in its retracted position the said block and plate are at the rear of the extension on the plate 18 supporting the knob shank, and when in its projected position as shown in Fig. 2, it rests in front of said extension, hence to retract the bolt the guide block must be moved in a direction to clear said extension, consequently with this mechanism the bolt will be deadlocked in its two positions, and owing to the circular movement of the crank arm 19, the throw of the bolt is approximately twice the length of said arm.
Secured to the outer face of the bolt actuating plate 24 is the horse shoe shaped plate- 25. Instead however of using an extra plate, plate 24 can be thickened and recessed to form the U-shaped recess therein. This recess is to receive the lug 26 on the cover-rollback-cam 27 2which latter is actuated by a key inserted in the cylinder or pin tumbler lock 28 at the outer side of the door. 1 This lock 28 and its connection with the cover roll back cam 27 is of the well known construction and. operates in the usual manner so that when cam 27 is turned by a key, the lug 26 thereon enters the open end of the recess 1n 1 plate 25 and actuates the latter by engagement with the walls of the U shaped recess to shift the bolt. After the bolt has been shifted by the key mechanism, the continued movement of the key carries the cover-rollback-cam 27 down to a plane below the plate 25 thus leaving the latter free to be moved with the knob mechanism.
29 is a spring secured to the bolt and bearing against the slide block 21 and operates to complete the throw of the latter both in projecting and retracting the bolt, so that after the pin 20 connecting the slide block 21 and arm 19 passes the center, the tension of the spring acting on the block throws the latter and the arm back to horizontal posi tion.
In the operation of the bolt by either the knob or key lock, the bolt is shifted approximately twice the length of the-lever arm on the roll-back cam, consequently it gives to the bolt an extra long throw which can be increased or diminished by increasing or decreasing the length of the arm and roll-back cam.
The above described mechanism for shifting the bolt is disclosed in my application Serial Number 401,194 filed Aug. 4th, 1920; hence these parts are not specifically claimed in this application.
The main bolt 12 is provided on its front face nearer its outer free end, but within the casing 10 with a fixed lug 30 which latter rests and moves in the inclined slots 31 formed in the rearward extensions 32 of the vertical bolts 33. There are two vertical bolts located within that part of the casing 10 which overhangs the jamb, one ofwhich is adapted to be projected through an opening in the top of the casing and the other through an opening in the bottom of the easing, and both adapted when fully retracted to rest with their free ends flush or approximately so with the top and bottom of the casing. The inner ends of these bolts are flattened so that they may overlap, and each is provided with the rearward extension 32 having a slot 31 which are oppositely inclined as shown. The lug 30 on the bolt rests in both of said slots and as the latter are oppositely inclined it follows that when the main bolt 12 is moved from its retracted to its locking position, the movement of the lug in the said slots, which as before explained are in overlapping parts of the bolts, simultaneously shifts both bolts 33 outwardlyand of course at right angles to the direction of movement of the main bolt 12,
and when the latter is retracted, the movementof the lug 30 in the slot 31 retracts or draws in both vertically moving bolts 33, so that with this construction the movements of the vertical bolts is simultaneous with the main bolt and are positively actuated by the latter.

15 is the keeper, which as shown is provided with a central housing 14 to receive the main bolt and with rearwardly projecting extensions 37 at its upper and lower ends the said extensions adapted to overlap respectively that part of the casing 10 which overhangs the jamb of the door, and each of these extensions is provided with an opening to receive a bolt 33, so that when the door is closed, the projecting end of the lock entens between theextensions 37 on the keeper and then by turning the knob on the key mechanism, the main bolt will be projected into the hous'ing14 of the keeper 15 and the vertical bolts 33 be projected into the openings or recesses in the end extension 37 of the keeper, thus positively. securing the. lock to the keeper so that it cannot be separated therefrom by a jimmy or other tool introduced between them or between the door and the jamb. Again as the main horizontal bolt is directly connected with and actuates thetwo vertical bolts, it will be seen that when the main bolt is moved, the other bolts will also be positively moved in a direction to engage with or disengage from the keeper.
With this construction the space between the end extensions 37 of the keeper may be somewhat greater than the width of the lock casing 10 to provide for shrinkage or settling, and the throw of the bolts, both the main and the auxiliary is ample to compensate for any change in position due to settling or shrinkage.
It is evident that many slight changes might be made in the relative arrangement of parts shown and described without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, hence I would have it understood that I do not wish to confine myself to the exact construction and arrangement of parts shown and described, but,
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is 1 1. The combination of a keeper having end extensions and a lock adapted to overlap the door j amb and be overlapped by the extensions on the keeper, the said lock having a main bolt adapted to engage the keeper and two bolts at right angles to the main bolt to engage recessed seats in the said extensions of the keeper, the said two bolts at right angles to the main bolt being positively actuated in' both directions by the movements of the said main bolt.
2. The combination of a keeper having an end extension and a lock adapted to overlap the door j amb and be overlapped at one end by the said extension on the keeper, the said lock having a main bolt adapted to engage thekeeper and a supplemental bolt connected directly with and positively actuated in itstwo movements by the main bolt and adapted to engage a recessed seat in the extension of the keeper.
3. The combination of a keeper having end extensions, and a lock adapted to overlap the door jamb and beoverlapped at its top and bottom by the said extensions on the keeper, the said lock having a main horizontal bolt adapted to engage the keeper, and two vertically moving bolts to engage the end extensions, the said vertically moving bolts having direct connection with the main bolt and positively. actuated in both direction thereby and means for actuating the main bolt.
4. The combination of a keeper having end extensions, and a lock adapted to overlap the door jamb and be overlapped at its top and bottom by the said extensions of the keeper, the said lock having-a main horiinner ends and means positively connecting the main bolt and the overlapping ends of the two vertical bolts whereby the three bolts are projected and retracted'in unison, and
means for actuating the main bolt.

The combination of a' keeper, having end extensions and a lock adapted to overlap the door jamb and be: overlapped at its top and bottom edges by the said extensions on .the keeper, the 'said lock having a main sliding bolt'and two vertically v horizontally sliding bolts, 'the' latter having flattened overlapping. inner ends, means dlrectly connecting the horizontally sliding bolt with the two flattened ends of the'vertically movable bolts whereby the three bolts are moved in unison and means for actuating the horizontal bolt.
