Be it knownthat. I, JOHN B; Fnnvsriten, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Stamford, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useiiul Improvements in Locks; and I `do hereby declare the following to be ay full, clear, and exact description ofthe invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertaiins to make and usethe same.

In the drawings, I have represented my improvements with a lock of the rim type, but it will be understood that. said iniprovements might be embodied in locks of other types. The casing 1 oi? the lock may be secured in any suitable manner to a door so that one end thereof will be ilus-h with the vertical tree edge of said door and the keeper 2 may be secured to .the door 'traine or jamb so as to be Hush or in alignment with the inner face of said jamlo. The keeper 2 -is provided at its open side with lugs or cross members 3', 3, which are so spaced apart andr trom the upper and lower walls `oit the keeper as to provide openings 4, 5, 6= for the passage into the keeper of the bolt members carried `by the lock casing as more fully hereinafter described.
The main bolt structure? of the lock comprises a plurality of bolt members 8, 9 and 10 carried by and integral with a body or apron member 11= mounted toslide in theY casing 1. 'llhe body portion of the main bolt carries a talon 1-2 to be engaged by one or another cani pin 13 carried by a cross liead 14 secured to the spindle 1-5 ot a knob 1G for projecting or reti-actin g the bolt. The knob spindle" and cross head may be held in the position to which they may be turned, by means or' the arms 1,7 oit a friction spring 18, as shown in Figure 2.
rIfhe members `8 and 9 of the main bolt structure are made hollow as indicated in Figures 1 to 4 and 9y and 11 and the intermediate member 10A is provided in its upper and flower sides with sockets or recesses 19 and 20. rIlhe tree ends of the several members 8, 9, 10 of the main bolt structure lie iuslr` with the front end of the casing when said main `bolt structure is in withdrawn or retracted position and said end of the casing is provided with a plurality of openings for the passage ot said. bolt members.
Auxiliary or dead-locking lbolt structures Q1 andl Q2, shown separately in Figures 5 6 and 743 are carried by the main beltl structures so as to be movable transversely ot the same,-the body portion oi' said main bolt structure being made with guideways 23, 24 and a transverse rib 25 itor the accommodation ot and cooperation with the bolt structures 21 and 22 to insure tree transverse movement of the latter. The auxiliary bolt structure 21 comprises a body portion 2G having a rib 2G:L to move in the guideway 24 and provided at one end with an arm 27 which straddles the rib'25 on the main bolt structures and enters the hollow bolt member 3 oi the latter,-said arm 2? carrying a vertical bolt member 23 to be projected across the space between the main belt members 3 and 9 and enter the recess 19 in the intermediate bolt member 10 when the bolts are projected into the keeper as shown in Figure 2. rlhe auxiliary bolt structure 22 comprises a body portion 29 movable in the guideway 23 of the main bolt and liv-,ving at its lower end, a forwardly proj ecting arm which enters the lower hollow main bolt member 9 and provided with an auxiliary bolt member 31 adapted to project across the space between the main bolt members 9 and 10 and enter the recess 2O in the under side of thel intermediate main bolt member when the bolts are projected into the keeper. Thus it will be seen that when the main bolt is projected into the keeper, the auxiliary bolts will be caused to have interlocking connection with the projected members ot the main bolt and also with the keeper behind the lugs or cross members 3 thereof, and 'forcing ot the lock casing and keeper with the use of a jimmy or other burglars tool will be rendered impossible.
liiith my improvements, the auxiliary bolt structures are caused to move respectively in opposite directions when projected or retracted and they will be locked in such respectivepositions, and when the main bolt is in retracted position within the lock casing, the auxiliary bolt members 28 and 31 will be housed within the hollow main bolt members S and 9 as indicated in Figure 9. ln accomplishing these results, the instrumentalities now to be explained are employed A lever 32 is pivotally connected, as at 33, with the main bolt and is provided at its respective ends with slots 34, 35 to engage pins 3G, 37 on the body portions of the auxiliary bolt structures 21 and 22 respectively, as indicated in Figure 2. The. body portion et the auxiliary bolt structure 21 is provided on its bottom side with projections 33--39 to be engaged by one of the cam pins 13 of the cross head 14 for moving the auxiliary bolt structures, as presently more fully explained. A lever is pivotally connected at one end, on a pin 41, to the upper portion ot the auxiliary bolt structure 21 and is provided between its ends with a rearwardly projecting arm 42 which enters between the lugs 33 and 39 in position to be engaged by one ot the cam pins 13. The lever 40 is also made with a depending L-shaped arm 43, the lower portion of which projects rearwardly and terminates in position to so engage a lug 44 on the main bolt structure as to normally lock the auxiliary bolt structures against movement when the latter are in either projected or retracted positions, and said lever is maintained in and returned to its normal position as shown in Figure 2, by the action ot a spring 45 attached at one end to a pin 43 on the lever arm 43 and at the other end to a pin 47 on the main bolt structure. l
issuming that the bolts are projected as indicated in Figure 2, and it is desired to retract the same to unlock the door, the operator may turn the knob and elicct movement of the cross head 14 to cause the lever cam pin 13 to travel upwardly in the arc of a circle. During the initial portion oli such upward travel ot the cam pin, it will engage the arm 42 o't Ahe locking lever 4t) and so turn the latter on its pivotal support as. to move its L-shaped arm 43 'from beneath the lug 44 on the main bolt structure and thus release the auxiliary bolt structures from locked connection with said main bolt structure. As the cam pin 13 continues to move upwardly, it will engage the lug 33 and thus move the auxiliary bolt structure 21 upwardly and, by reason of the lever connection 32, cause the auxiliary bolt structure 22 to move downwardly,-th us withdrawing the two auxiliary bolt members 28 and 31 into the hollow main bolt members 3 and 9 respectively. As the cam pin 13 continues to move upwardly in the arc or' a circle, it will enter the talon 12 olf the main bolt structure and and retract the latter together with the auxiliary bolt structures, into the lock casing. lt will be seen that when the bolts are projected as shown in Figure 2, the auxiliary bolt structures will be locked against movement by the lever arm 43 projecting under the lug 44, and it will be understood that when said auxiliary bolt structures are in retracted positions, they will be locked against movement by the lever arm 43 projected over said lug 44.

Various changes might be made in the details of construction of my invention without departing from the spirit thereof or limiting its scope and hence I do not wish to restrict myself to the precise details herein set forth.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
l. In a lock structure, the combination with a lock casing and a keeper, o1e a main bolt structure including spaced bolt members to enter the keeper, two vertically movable auxiliary bolt structures carried by the `main bolt structure and including bolt members to be projected across spaces between said main bolt members, a lever pivoted between its ends to the main bolt structure and having` connections with the respective auxiliary bolt structures, and manually operable means including a cam pin to engage one of said auxiliary bolt structures and cause the two auxiliary bolt structures to be moved simultaneously in opposite directions.
2. In a lock structure, the combination with a lock casing and a keeper, of a main bolt structure including` spaced bolt mem bers to enter the keeper, two vertically movable auxiliary bolt structures carried by the main bolt structure and including` bolt members to be projected across spaces between said main bolt members, a lever pivoted between its ends to the main bolt structure and having connections with the respective auxiliary bolt structures, manually operable means including a cam pin to engage one oi? said auxiliary bolt structures and cause' the two auxiliary bolt structures to be moved simultaneously in opposite direcrions, and locking means for said auxiliary rolt structures and having a part positioned to be operated by said manually operable means to operate said locking means to release the auxiliary bolt structures.
3. In a lock structure, the combination. with a lock casing and a keeper, of a main bolt structure including spaced main bolt members to enter the keeper, two vertically movable auxiliary bolt structures carried by the main bolt structure and including bolt members to be projected across the spaces between the main bolt members, means connecting the auxiliary bolt structures whereby the same may be caused tomove simultaneously in opposite directions, manually operable means including a cam pin for operating said auxiliary bolt members, a lu on the main bolt structure, a lever pivote@ to one of said auxiliary bolt members and having a depending arm to cooperate with said lug to lock the auxiliary bolt structures in either projected or retracted positions, a spring normally tending to move and hol-:l the lever in cooperation with said lug, said lever having an arm in position to be engaged by the manually operable cam pin te release the auxiliary bolt structures from locked relation to the main bolt structure, and means on the main bolt structure to be engaged by the manually operable cam pin to project or retract the main bolt and the auxiliary bolt structures carried thereby relatively to the keeper.
